Hi, guys!
So… I apologize. I stink at live blogging – at least during the summer. With Mal and Quinn home, every day is a little bit different, so I’m juggling home life and work life, and it’s not always easy to hop on my laptop whenever I want. I think when we get back into a routine for the school year, the live blogging will be easier. In the meantime, please enjoy random updates from me every couple of days. Life is about balance, right? ๐
This morning kicked off with a delicious bowl of overnight oats. I made this combination over the weekend, and it turned out so well (super thick, not too sweet), so now I’ve rocked it every morning this week. Holy yum!
After breakfast, we got ourselves ready for the day. We dropped off Quinn at school, who requested that I “act like Murphy” when I said goodbye. Mal and I then headed to Orangetheory for a workout.
We lovvvvve OTF, but the location closest to our house is really not that close, so we only get there every other month or so. It’s always a good time though – I especially loved today’s strength workout. It had some longer incline intervals on the treadmill and then some awesome lower body strength movements on the floor.
Sneaker star of the day: His and hers Launch 5! FYI: Women’s and men’s are on sale right now! ๐
I wanted to test out my Fitbit Versa compared to the OTF heart rate monitor that I usually wear. The results were not too far off. I used the generic “workout” mode on my Fitbit and then wore my OTF monitor on my other wrist.
The calories burned are a bit higher on the OTF monitor, but not by much, and the average heart rate was the same. Not too shabby, right?
I’m actually pretty happy about this because now I can just wear my Fitbit to OTF and not bother with the heart rate monitor anymore. I like seeing my stats on the TV screen, but I’m okay looking down at my watch every once in awhile too.
Question of the Day
OTF peeps: What do you wear to track your workouts?ย

I always just wear my fitbit. Too cheap to buy the OTF heart rate monitor…plus I find my name on the screen to be distracting and disappointing as I never get into the red/orange due to my low heart rate and quick recovery. No splat points haha.
@Amanda: I do wear the OTF monitor, but I feel ya. I rarely get splat points, 3 max… I’m taking it as a sign that I need to push myself more? Haha.
I wear my Fitbit and OTF monitor (I have the chest strap) every week, and every week OTF says I burned at least 100 calories more than my Fitbit says. Obviously I accept the OTF results.
I’m so glad you wrote about the comparison between fitness trackers. I do wear the OTF monitor, but have been eyeing the Fitbit Versa. Would you think the Fitbit is more accuarte calucating calories or? Regardless, OTF is a fun workout and definitely challenging!
Keep in mind that your Orangetheory Fitness coach uses the HR data on the OTBeat screen to coach you. If you aren’t wearing their HR monitor, you’re not getting the benefit of coaching. Also, putting that data out there with everyone else in class is an accountability tool. Glad to hear you like the workout!
@cyndi: I go to OTF at least 3 times a week and the most the coach ever says is a generic “great you guys are lighting up the screen” I do actually wear both the OTF monitor and a Versa but can’t say a coach (in any of the 8 or so studio’s I have visited) has ever used it in any personalized way.
@Gianna: Missed opportunity! It’s why everyone’s name is on the screen. We do coach individual members in our studios. (I’m a Regional Fitness Educator and Head Coach.) We say there are actually 3 coaches in the studio: The COACH, the VVA (visual aid screens), and the OTBeat Screen.
@Gianna: I agree. They never have used it to coach people individual. The amount you have to pay for it isnt worth it in my opinion. My Fitbit versa calculates my heart rate and a lot more!
Yummola! Thanks for sharing an overnight oats recipe with collagen. Looking forward to trying it out!
I’ve been eyeing Orange Theory for awhile now and want to give it a try. Interesting about the monitor you wear vs. the Fitbit. I have the Fitbit Ionic and love it. It’s a lot of watch but it’s the only one that tracks laps when I swim. Good to know about the OTF monitor though for when (not if) I do try Orange Theory. Thanks!
