After breakfast, Mal and I headed to CrossFit for a (FUN) partner workout.
Workout
Our coaches wanted us to match up with someone of a different athletic ability (i.e. guy + girl), so Mal and I teamed up for our second ever partner WOD. (Remember our first one together? It was so fun and we killed it!)
METCON:
The REAL Swingy Balls
In teams of two:
A) In teams of two, take 15 minutes to work up to max push jerk, for combined weight.
B) With a clock running for 10 minutes, complete:
400m Buddy Carry
*Carrying a buddy AND a kettlebellWith remaining time, AMRAP unbroken KB swings
*If you break KB swings, your partner starts their set of swings, and so on.Rx: (70, 53)
L2: (53, 35)
L1: (45, 30)
Beg: (35, 25)
For the first part of the workout, I worked with another gal, who partnered up with her husband. Instead of adding and stripping the weights when we lifted with our husbands, we worked together since we were of similar strength. We started at 65 pounds for the Jerks and worked our way up to 115, which was a 1RM max for me!
Then, it was time for the 400 meter Buddy Carry, which was hilarious. I don’t know why I think Buddy Carries are so funnyāāmaybe it’s because I’m so awkward and clearly have no idea what I’m doingāābut I laughed almost the entire time.
Mal did the first 200 meters with me on his back.
I forgot to add that we had to hold a kettle bell while carrying our partner.
Hahaha! I have no idea what he’s sayingā¦
And then it was my turnā¦
Tip: Pick up the kettle bell before you pick up your partner. It’s a lot easier!
Almost doneā¦
Laughing the entire timeā¦
After the Buddy Carry, Mal and I busted out 131 kettle bell swings.
We alternated unbroken swings until we ran out of time.
I know I’ve said this before, but CrossFit is like playtime. I felt like a big kid doing half the stuff we did today. So fun!
A huge THANKS to Kerrie for snapping these pics!
Snack
After CrossFit, I refueled with a vanilla-coffee protein shake made with vanilla fitmixer protein powder, decaf iced coffee, almond milk, and ice.
Lunch
A little while later, I broke out some leftovers from last night’s dinner at Stockholders. They were quite tasty reheated!
After lunch, I enjoyed an amazingly delicious brownie in a mug that my friend Kerrie blogged about the other day. I didn’t have almond butter or baking soda, so I used peanut butter and baking powder instead, which worked out well. Here are the measurements I used:
- 1 tbsp peanut butter (I used chunky – it was like a nutty brownie!)
- 1 tbsp liquid egg whites
- 1 tps cocoa powder
- 1/8 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tbsp honey
- Pinch of baking powder
Question of the Day
Do you ever work out with your significant other?

I am super impressed that you can carry Mal around on your back! Those pictures are so funny!
Oh my gosh what a workout! Major jealous of your strength. I’m 4″9 and my partner is well over 6″ so don’t think I’d be able to carry him. Maybe drag him??
That workout looks like so much fun. I need to try to talk my boyfriend into working out with me more. I am in awe of couples who workout together often!
So funny! I don’t think I would be able to even carry him because I wouldn’t be able to stop laughing!
Hahaha I absolutely loved the photos of the buddy carry. My boyfriend is 6’5″…he would KILL me if I tried to lift him haha!
I could not help but “LOL’ing” while reading your post! I love crossfit. It really does make you feel like a kid again.
Aw, I love this! Buddy carries are SO much fun! Congrats on your #115 jerk – that’s some serious weight.
I realized recently I had let CrossFit get WAY too serious for me…all about trying to RX and stressing about how I would perform and trying to up the weight on my ME lifts and nail new movements like chest to bar pullups. I saw a great video of Camille Leblanc-Bazinet talking about how much fun she has doing CrossFit, and I was like, “Oh, yeah. I started doing this because it’s fun.” Now I try to appreciate all the crazy stuff we get to do like handstands and rope climbs and buddy carries – stuff kids do!!!
Those pictures of you carrying Mal made me laugh… a Lot! Partner WODs are the best!
I train with my boyfriend, Russ, for throwing the javelin! He’s a shot put and discus thrower (www.russthrowsstuff.com), and pushes me to do things correctly all the time. Since he’s such a naturally gifted athlete and I have awkward posture in everything, he watches me to make sure my technique is good, and also just generally motivates me. I watch him to be motivated by the massive amounts of weight he moves! If I’m having a bad day and get annoyed with his help, he is so cute in reminding me that he cares about me and doesn’t want to see me get hurt by doing something not as correctly as I could. He’s so patient. š
Also, we met in the Caribbean and had chicken fights in the ocean with our friends…with 290-pound Russ on my shoulders, and I was laughing the whole time too!!!
I love working out with my husband! Like you said, it feels like play time! This weekend, we loaded up a Quest on Fitocracy that we hadn’t done and got to work. This was after we did a Pilates DVD for the first time together to see what it was like!
