My Boston Marathon Race Day Outfit

The marathon is just 4 days from today! FOUR!! AHHHH! I can’t believe it. I really can’t believe it. I am so excited and so nervous at the same time.

At this point, I know I need to just trust my training, stop obsessively checking the weather forecast, and focus on the things that I can control, like my OUTFIT for race day. I’ve also received quite a few questions from readers about what I am wearing for the big day, so here is a rundown of my Boston Marathon race day outfit!

JUNK Headband – I get SO MANY questions about my headbands and these are them! They’re from JUNK, and I love them so much. I wear one for almost every workout I do. The one I am wearing for the marathon is their neon Pro Sport “Monarch” Flex-Tie headband, which is printed on technical jersey fabric that wicks moisture, dries quick, and stays put!

Oakley Overtime Sunglasses – I love these sunglasses so much that I own two pairs of them””one for workouts and one for daily use. They’re lightweight and stay put, so they’re great for running (I’ll CrossFit in them on occasion), but they’re also stylish, so I wear them ALL the time.

Stonyfield singlet – Yayyyyyy, Team Stonyfield! I am so excited and proud to represent the brand by wearing a Boston Marathon tank with their logo on it. I love the neon orange so much. You’ll see me coming from a mile away!

New Balance Comfy Comformer Sports Bra – I’ve mentioned this sports bra a few (hundred) times on CNC, and I’m still in love with it. It’s just the best sports bra for long distance running. It keeps everything in place with no chaffing. I actually own three now!

SPIbelt – I plan to use my SPIbelt for carrying my GU and iPhone (so I can listen to music, take pictures, and find Mal after the race), so it’s a must-have for marathon day.

PRO Compression leggings – I wore these leggings for a lot of my long runs during training, so I am sticking with them for the marathon. My PRO Compression leggings review.

Bombas socks – These are the best socks ever, and I’ve worn them for all of my training runs, so they will definitely be with me on marathon day. My Bombas review.

Brooks Glycerin 12 – I have SO MUCH LOVE for these sneakers!!! They’ve carried me for hundreds of miles during my training, and I know I can absolutely count on them for 26.2 miles!

  1. Make sure you write your name on your jersey. You won’t regret hearing TINA be shouted from the 20k spectators–and you’ll especially appreciate that going up Heartbreak Hill!

  2. Post-race advice: instead of meeting in the family area, meet in the Park Plaza lobby (or somewhere like that). It’ll be easier for him with the baby and it’s a pretty straight shot from the finish line for you. Way better and less chaotic than the family area, at least.

  3. My race day outfit included shorts and a tank. Sports bra and socks. Sneakers and headband. Ipod arm band and sunglasses. I made sure my shorts had a side zipper to stash my jelly beans. The marathon I ran gave out GU’s along the route, does Boston do that?

    I also wore my outfit on a training run to make sure I was comfortable in my outfit for a long duration of time.

    p.s. I tried The Complete Cookie – Snickerdoodle yesterday and I’m in love! I had half last night and will have the other half tonight but I need to go back to The Vitamin Shoppe to get more and maybe try some other flavors!

  4. Having an outfit that feels good and that you feel good in helps me find confidence. I usually wear Lulu running shorts, same brand sports bra and whatever tank I’m loving at the moment. So excited for you!

  5. I’d love to get one for the NYC half marathon if they make those, otherwise I’d get one for my friend who has done a ton of marathons 🙂

  6. Love that headband! I have only done one race before – a half marathon – and during training I bought all this extra running “stuff” that ended up just bugging me and I didn’t even wear for the race! I just wore spandex, a tank top, and a cheap zip up to toss if needed. I’m sure for a full marathon what you wear matters more!

  7. I love this! I always treat myself to a new outfit when I do a new race. I just bought my first outfit from Lululemon for an upcoming race! I typically wear capris or shorts + compression socks, and a technical t. I can’t wear tanks for races because I burn so easily and the straps always drive me nuts!

  9. So exciting! This is the first year in a couple that I’m not volunteering (I’m so disappointed!) but I’ll definitely be there to cheer! Good luck and have so much fun! Oh, and if you’re still looking for playlist suggestions, my favorite run song is Wannabe by the Spice Girls. I get so caught up in signing along that I forget I’m running 😉

  10. My race outfit always involves a bright red skirt (it’s got built in shorts under the skirt so it’s practical too!) as the “lady runners” I do group runs with wear this as their uniform. A comfortable t-shirt is always a must as well! (plus sunglasses and hat to cope with the desert sun). I also use a little arm band with a pocket to hold my keys and phone. Super excited for you – bring on BOSTON!!! 🙂 🙂

  12. I am in love with the Brooks Glycerin as well! I was a very loyal Saucony wearer until they changed the make of the style I wore and after wearing them twice my knees were killing me. The wonderful guys at my local running shoe store suggested the Glycerin model and I have not looked back. They are my favorite!!

  13. Maybe this is a weird question (I’m hoping I’m not the only one who has this problem, though), do you ever chaff under your arms? I’m training for my 3rd half marathon with the potential to keep training for a full afterwards, but I’ve always had this problem once my mileage gets to be about 9/10 miles. Sometimes it helps if I wear a shirt with sleeves, but in the middle of summer I try to fight those tan lines as much as possible. I’ve thought maybe I could get a different sports bra or something along those lines that may help. Do you have any suggestions?

    1. Now that there’s rain, I’m planning to wear gloves, but everything else will stay the same… well, minus the sunglasses!
