Monday In Meals + Tis the Season for Treats

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Good morning!

It’s time for another edition of Monday In Meals where I recap what I ate throughout the day on Monday with a few random adventures thrown into the mix. Ok, here we go!

Yesterday morning started bright and early at 5:01 AM, which, of course, meant: COFFEE. I added eggnog and collagen to mine.

I worked until about 6:30 AM when Qman woke up. We cuddled on the couch, played, and then I made breakfast for the two of us. For me: Scrambled eggs with broccoli rabe and roasted potatoes with peppers and onions (from Trader Joe’s). I also finish off Quinn’s mango since he wasn’t in the mood for it.

I ate breakfast so early, I was hungry again right before we were about to leave for CrossFit. I can’t work out on an empty stomach, so I ate half of a RXBAR. The maple sea salt flavor is EASILY my favorite. So friggin’ good!!

Then, we leave for CrossFit. Hey, snow! FYI: Quinn wants to wear his (light-up Batman) rain boots ALL THE TIME nowadays. I have a friend with a daughter about the same age and she loves her rain boots too. Toddler thing?

I used #95 for the Squat Cleans and finished in 10:00. Post-workout, I drink a protein shake made with SFH vanilla Recovery protein powder.

After CrossFit, Quinn and I drive to Whole Foods for a few groceries and a $0.25 chocolate chip cookie to celebrate National Cookie Day. FYI: Whole Foods is still offering the deal today (Tuesday), so hop on it! 🙂 #cookielovers

Qman and I started out sharing a cookie, but he was quickly distracted by the bakery case…

He eyed a Peppered Brioche Bun, pointed to it, and said “pleeeeaaassseeee” in the sweetest little voice ever, so I give him a Peppered Brioche Bun because apparently he’s fancy. Qman eats the bun, so I finish off the chocolate chip cookie. Win win. I also get a half Vietnamese/half decaf cold brew coffee (because I can’t go into Whole Foods without buying one).

We leave Whole Foods and put our boots to good use by splashing in the puddles near my car in the parking lot. FYI: Some colors of the Hunter Original Tall Gloss Boots are $45 off right now!

Back at home, we play for a bit and then I make us lunch. Qman eats soup, crackers, and sliced peaches. I reheat some Sweet Potato Hash (made with ground beef instead of turkey).

During naptime, I get to work. I eat the other half of my RXBAR from the morning and make myself a decaf eggnog latte (1/2 egg nog + 1/2 unsweetened almond milk, so it’s not a total calorie bomb).

When Quinn wakes up from his nap, we take Murphy for a walk and then meet Dada at Target for Day 5 of 24 Days of Togetherness: Get a Christmas tree. Since we already got our real Christmas tree, we decide to get a “niny” decoration and consider quite a few options at Target before picking the best tree yet.

Mal and Qman immediately fall in love with a LED Christmas tree, which I suppose fits right into Day 5’s activity.

I don’t think it was what we were originally planning, but we definitely love it!

For dinner, we had Crockpot Chicken Cacciatore over pasta with side salads.

After dinner, the boys want to make the rest of our holiday cookies from Day 3 of our 24 Days of Togetherness. I’m always game for cookies and ended up eating three of them. THREE. Tis the season, right?

But, seriously, when I was putting together this post to recap what I ate throughout the day, I immediately thought: Holy cow, I ate a lot of junk/sugar. I didn’t even realize it until I saw it all together. I’m usually not someone who changes my eating habits all that much during the holidays (of course, I’ll eat some treats here and there), and I’m typically pretty aware of what I eat throughout the day (i.e. DTFN meal plan), but I totally lost track yesterday. I sort of followed by meal plan, but there were just so many opportunities to eat my favorite treats. I blame the holidays!!! Haha! Oh, well. It was a fun day of eating and sometimes that’s what life is all about. Back on track today with my meal plan!

Question of the Day

How much do your food choices change during the holidays?

  1. First, I want to try that flavor RXBar! Second, I don’t think my eating habits change much, but I’m sure if I captured everything during the holidays, I’d be surprised.

  2. It’s all about balance! I guess that’s a testament to why tracking your eats is *sometimes* a good thing every so often so you can really get a wide picture of the day.

I have to try that vietnamese cold brew at Whole Foods! Sounds really good every time you mention it.

  3. Who hasn’t been there? Uh. Crap. I had four cookies yesterday! Meh. I used to freak out about that kind of thing but realized that actually made it harder to change teh next day. Stay calm and eat your kale, you will be fine! ha ha ha ha

    1. Totally! I personally think I enjoy these days a lot more because my diet is pretty on point the majority of the time, so when I have an “off” day, I’m completely okay with it.

  4. I almost bought that same tree at Target last night! I found a few Christmas presents, though, and it went over my “Target threshold” (I have to have one to get out alive) so I didn’t. Cool comment, me. 🙂

  5. Hi Tina,

It looks like not colors are on sale. I was hoping to get the Hunter tall gloss boots in military red but they are not on sale 🙁

Is there any code that I should be using?

    Thanks! Love your site.

  6. I LOVE peppermint stick ice cream and it’s just so festive this time of year! We bought a half gallon during our grocery trip Sunday and I’ve been enjoying it every night. I try to balance it out with eating healthy the rest of the day, but it brings me so much joy it’s worth it 😉

  7. I appreciate you sharing this so honestly! Thank you 🙂

I am doing what you first did, when trying to lose weight slowly and gradually. I am trying to make small changes that will lead to big ones over time and to eat now, how I expect I can forever. However, the holidays have already derailed me quite a few times. I really struggle with staying consistent when I am out of routine. Would be great if you could write a post on this, or maybe you have already?

  8. You and me both with the sweets lately! I’m not one for restricting, especially during the holidays, but I put myself on a sugar/refined carb watch this week. Too many handfuls of peanut butter M&Ms and slices of cast iron cornbread were making me feel wonky. Also, I’ve started adding collagen to my morning iced coffee, and I’ve noticed a difference! Aaaaaaand lastly (food-related, typical) I must get my hands on the flavor of Rx Bar!

  9. I’ve barely eaten anything in the last 24 hours because I got some horrible stomach flu! Finally feeling a little better this afternoon.

  10. Love the honesty! I have plenty of days where I forget i’m eating much more sugar than usual. and it’s similar, a little here and little there.. I just work it off with a run or crossfit and clean up the next meal. Love RX bars too!

  11. Loved your honesty! We’re all human, it’s the holidays, and it’s just food, after all. I think it’s great that you’re sharing this with everyone so they see healthy eating isn’t all kale salads and goji berries ☺️
