Right out of college, I gained 25 pounds.
Suddenly, life was so different. I was living in a new city, had a 40+ hour/week job, was commuting nearly 3 hours a day on public transportation… my cushy college life was over. No more dining hall salad bar, flexible schedule, ‘quick walk’ to the gym, or friends to exercise with.
I was overwhelmed, stressed, and it felt like I just couldn’t get myself together.
I’d skip the gym for happy hour…
Try to turn a difficult day around with sugary cookies and muffins…
Plop myself down on the couch in front of the TV (no workout) to unwind…
One day of ‘messing up’ spilled over into the next and the next and the next. It was a vicious cycle.
Eventually though, I grew tired of my own shit. Plus, none of my clothes fit.
I decided the ‘fixed’ mindset I had, the one that said, “Well you can’t make it to the gym every day so why bother?” or “You’ve already had a cookie, why not have the rest of the pack?” was doing absolutely zero good.
So, I adopted a ‘growth’ mindset. One that forced me to focus on the positives and let go of the things I couldn’t control. I celebrated when I made it to the gym 3 times in a week. I congratulated myself when I meal prepped and actually ate it, rather than grabbing takeout.
I took everything one day at a time and always focused on the good.
Over time, this growth mindset thing started to work, and I actually began seeing physical results!
Those simple mindset shifts helped me get back on track to being my best self.
Has your ‘fixed’ mindset prevented you from getting results in the past? Where are you stuck?
