Heyyyyyyy! How’s it going?

Quinn and I had a nice morning yesterday! It started with a trip to Whole Foods for our weekly grocery shopping.

Quinn was wide awake when we arrived and then totally passed out by the time we left.

He was actually still snoozing when we got home, so I decided to snap a picture of my grocery haul and tell you about our meal plan for the week. (This shopping is a bit smaller than usual because I did a BIG one last week.) This week’s (dinner) meal plan:

I ate an egg sandwich around 5:00 AM, so I was hungry again when I was at Whole Foods. I heard a rumor that the egg sandwiches from the hot bar are really good, so I had to see what they were all about. Verdict: I liked it, but mine are better! I also bought a caramel-white chocolate-macadamia nut cookie to go with my breakfast sandwich. I was planning to buy a muffin or scone, but the cookies just called to me””and, boy, I am glad I bought one. Deeeeelicious! I bought the Organic Valley creamer because it was on sale and $0.69 cheaper than the stuff I usually buy, and it’s really good. It’s definitely sweet and a little goes a long way!

Breakfast was awesome!

After breakfast, I did a few things around the house, fed Quinn, and then we headed out for a run. I planned to run 4-5 miles at Southfield, but my intestines had other plans. Blah.

So, remember when I almost got myself off steroids and then everything went to sh*t? Well, that basically happened again. This time, I stopped taking the Lialda that I was taking for years. I figured it wasn’t working anymore and maybe it was keeping me in a flare? All of the times that I stopped taking drugs for my UC, I got better, so I figured it couldn’t hurt to try. I mean, I’m out of options at this point. Well, I weaned down to 2.5 mg once again, felt great, and then things fell apart. I was in the bathroom all weekend, but I started to feel a little better today (when I upped my dose of Prednisone again). Anyway”¦

My plan for running 4-5 miles at Southfield turned into running/walking on the streets around our neighborhood just in case I needed to stop home to use the bathroom. I ended up popping into my house once, but the rest of the time, I was mostly fine and managed to fit in 4 miles! Woohoo!

It’s suppose to rain for the next 3 days, so I’m glad that Quinn and I got our workout in!

Every Sunday, Mal and I talk about our workouts for the upcoming week and make adjustments as needed. This week, for example, we had a few things on the agenda that we needed to plan around:

  • Rain Tuesday through Thursday
  • I have a facial appointment on Wednesday night
  • We have plans with friends on Friday night

When I realized that it was going to rain a lot this week, I asked Mal if we could switch our usual evening CrossFit workouts, so my Monday workout would be running outside with Q instead of CrossFit, and he was totally cool with it. It’s awesome that Mal loves fitness as much as I do because we both make our workouts a priority in our lives. Of course, it’s more difficult with a baby, but we manage to stick with a regular exercise schedule as much as possible, thanks to some coordination and teamwork. And if we’re really short on time, we just do a quickie driveway or basement WOD. A little something is better than nothing and those quickie, high-intensity CrossFit-style workouts can really kick your butt in 15-20 minutes!

  1. We try to coordinate our workouts together on the weekends so we’re not at the gym at separate times, other than that, we’re on our own 🙂 You’ve made me want to hit up the Whole Foods hot bar for lunch today – Your egg sandwich and cookie look delish!

  2. I have a feeling that once Alex and I have a kid I am going to have to work reeeally hard to figure out my workouts. I’m so glad that there are so many resources nowadays to help with things like that, but still.
    I’m pulling for you and hoping that you feel better soon. I know how frustrating this dance is. When might you start on Remicade? The quicker they can get you off
    the steroids, the better. Feel better soon!

  3. So sorry to hear you’re having a tough time with UC! I can relate to having terrible digestive issues while running and it’s just all around a horrible feeling 🙁

    When my kids were babies my husband and I didn’t always handle the workout issue nicely with each other and it often caused arguments, resentments built up (he refused to run with a jogger and I never ran without!) but ultimately with our kids older now all of that’s in the past and we’re really supportive of one another. That’s a topic that hits close to home I would think for a lot of readers since often spouses want to work out just as much as they do, and it can be a tricky balance.

  4. i’ve said it before, but i love how you and mal work together to make your workouts work out!! my fiance and i go to crossfit every morning before work and are obsessed and absolutely love our routine/lifestyle. so many people tell us “oh, wait til you have kids” or they make excuses about why they can’t go workout because they have kids etc etc. it drives me NUTS! when that day comes (not for a few years!!) we will make it work because we are a team, we know how important it is to one another, and it is a huge priority in our lives! it makes both of us better/healthier/happier people, so why would we ever take that away from one another?? i just like reading about how you guys make it work because it reminds me that some people just make excuses, others work together and make it work!

  5. I wish my husband was into working out like I am…it would help with my motivation to stay fit. I’d love for him to go on runs (or even walks) with me. But he’s not into working out the way he was when we first started dating 4 years ago. He’s got a fast metabolism and I do not so I need to workout in order to enjoy luxurious food items on the weekends with him, haha. Thankfully he’s still supportive of my workouts and I’m hoping someday I can rope him back in 🙂

  6. I love that you addressed balancing workouts with your husband. I’m 38 weeks (and counting!) pregnant, and my hubby and I are both really into fitness (like… everyday workout-ers). We know we’re going to have to be more flexible when the nugget arrives, but it’s nice to hear how you handle it!

  7. Your teamwork and communication with Mal is awesome! My fiancé and I still have the luxury of working out together in the mornings before work since we don’t have kids yet, but we use teamwork and communication like that in other aspects of our lives. Based on our schedules, we sit down each week to discuss who is in charge of making dinner on certain nights or who needs to do some more chores around the house for the week if the other is swamped with work. It works out really well for us.

  8. Hi Tina! I was wondering about your home gym that you blogged about a while back. Do you use that very often? We don’t have the setup that y’all do, but we have enough equipment to get a good workout in at home. However, I find that I am much less motivated to workout at home and prefer going to the gym. Are you the same way?

  9. My husband teaches at the university here, and we only have one car (and two dogs that go to daycare three times a week). We coordinate workout schedules every semester based on his class schedule. I often end up biking to morning CrossFit so he can leave before I return, and it generally works out. But man, does it add to the burden of exercise sometimes!

  10. Yep, the hubs and I both do Crossfit. We have two girls as well, so we can’t go together. I usually go at 5 am while everyone is still sleeping. That way it doesn’t cut out on time with the girls either. He will go over lunch or after work. Works out nicely. Both of us get to workout and still get lots of family time too!

  11. We do coordinate workouts with each other since having a baby. For example tonight I’m going to a late workout class so he’s on dinner duty. Stuff like that! It’s nice to have a supportive partner and one that values the same things as you!

  12. Once the babies are born and I get back to exercising, my husband and I will definitely need to coordinate our workouts. I’m sure it’ll be a challenge, but exercise is a priority for us as well, so I’m sure we’ll figure it out.

  13. my husband and i try to coordinate workouts so that i minimize time running in the dark (early hours of the morning) alone. since he runs a few times a week, we try to schedule his miles alongside my early morning ones! safety first 🙂

  14. I usually work out with my daughter…It makes it more fun and now my husband is wanting to join us. He admires our commitment and wants a part of the fun 🙂

  15. Sorry to hear about your flare and hope things calm down for you soon! My husband does not share the same enthusiasm for fitness that I do. He has a very active job but does not do any formal exercise other than maybe a walk with the family from time to time. He does support me in my desire to get moving and watches the little guy so that I can get out and attend some classes!

  16. What kind of tortillas do you use for your dobladas? I bought some brown rice ones from whole foods, and they were so brittle and dry. Suggestions?

    1. I buy regular tortillas, so they’re a lot softer– usually the 365 brand or whatever is on sale. If you heat the brown rice ones before you add the stuff inside, sometimes they hold up a little better.

  17. Great haul from Whole Foods!! I always forget about chicken parm, but that sounds really good over spaghetti squash!!

    My fiance and I try to coordinate workouts and dinners. We like to get in a longer run on the weekends, so we prioritize that into our plans.

  18. I’m so sorry about your flare up … must be very tough for you to live with. As far as workouts, I do not plan them with my husband. He does his own thing in the morning before work, and I do my own thing in the afternoons and evenings when I teach classes. I guess that will all change when we have kids though. Hope you feel good today!

  19. That’s awesome you have a partner that likes to workout as much as you. That is something I’m always looking for. One of my friends told me her husband was like her liked to workout a ton when they got married but after a few years and two kids he stopped. She still works out but he makes her feel guilty sometimes for doing it. I’m not sure what the trick is to keeping it forever. I think everyone struggles with consistency and balance.

  20. That is awesome that you and Mal are able to coordinate like that! I take my little one to childcare at the gym during the day so we don’t need to, but if I ever want to workout in the weekend my husband is always happy to watch our little one. ☺

  21. I am so lucky, both my husband and I go to CrossFit 4 times per week at 6.30am and then yoga on a Saturday! I love working out and enjoying this time together!

    Have you found the skull yet? I’m still waiting for Genghis Khan to pop up at any moment! :-S

  22. Looks like a beautiful fall day! We got our first snowfall yesterday. (Wah!) Once our baby arrives (which should be any day now), I know my husband and I will be very supportive of each others workouts that each of us want to do throughout the week.

  23. My boyfriend’s work schedule is pretty crazy, so most of the time I’m coordinating my workouts around his work.

    But on the weekends we do pretty well at coordinating activities around one another. We often do a big hike, or bike ride, and then each have some separate activity. It would be really hard for both of us if the other person wasn’t accommodating with their schedule.

  25. I’m glad you were able to get your workout in with Quinn. That is a tough call with the UC stuff and what to do in terms of taking/not taking medication. It sounds like you are starting to get a feel for what works for your system, although still tough to make the call. I hope that you continue to feel better (and don’t have to be on the prednisone). The weather looks awesome for your workout too, which is always great especially with a little one 🙂

  26. My husband is active, but he’s not as consistent about working out like I am so we rarely have to coordinate. If he’s up for a run during the week, then we’ll do one together – otherwise we try to do something active together over the weekend, whether it’s running, hiking or going to the gym. I do wish he was a little more consistent with exercise, but I also like not having to consult him with my schedule all the time. I guess you can’t have everything! haha

  27. Yes both my husband and I workout every single day – we have a 13 month old, I’m 32 weeks pregnant with #2 and we both work at least 60 hour work weeks. For us, workouts are a non-negotiable…so we talk about our plans every Sunday and if there is anything that needs to be moved/adjusted. It’s great!

  28. My husband does all of his workouts at the gym at his job. Occasionally he has to work through his lunch and then needs to come home and run but mostly his workouts do not interfere with the family at all. This is a very good thing when you have 3 kids and sports and dance class and homework and dinner etc… to get through at night.
    It is so smart that you consider the weather when planning your weekly workouts. I never do that so I end up just having to move my runs to the treadmill in our basement..which makes me so grumpy. I’m going to check out the weather from now on and plan something more interesting than the treadmill on rainy days.

    I have a random question…do you ever have side effects from prednisone? I always get moon face and so puffy :(.

  30. I don’t really coordinate workouts with my husband, probably because we don’t have any kids yet so our schedules are more easy-going. We do go on a run together or do a workout in the gym together once in a while though, so we certainly plan those out.

  31. I love the days I get to workout with Dave at the gym. We normally are both doing our own thing but it’s nice to know that it’s a priority to us both. He changed from a lunch workout to after work so we could spend that time “together”. I love that you guys are able to work out a schedule with a little one! What an awesome system!

    I don’t really have to plan too much with my husband b/c he hates the gym & rides his bike to work (plus he’s one of those who’s automatically athletic). He plays basketball a few times a month though, so we coordinate that. I just take baby L to the gym daycare when I teach fitness classes-win win for both of us! 🙂

  33. Do you regret buying all of the home gym equipment? Did you decide that you didn’t working out at home?

    Once our baby comes (and I’m cleared for exercise) I’m just going to have to walk and do dvds as my husband works away, and works heaps! I’m not sure how I will feel about putting him into gym crèche while he is little.

  34. I used to be afraid to run in the rain, too.. but then I moved to Seattle!! haha!! If I never ran in the rain, I literally would only get to run 2 months out of the year.
