Without The Internet

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Good morning! Happy Thursday! Did anyone else wake up thinking it was Friday this morning? For some reason, yesterday felt like Thursday all day to me. Weird.

We had a bunch of ripe bananas in our kitchen yesterday morning, so I whipped up a batch of OMG Pancakes for Mal and me for breakfast. Like always, I topped mine with Teddie peanut butter and maple syrup. Holy yum. I also drank a glass of decaf iced coffee with almond milk with breakfast.

After breakfast, I headed to my office to get to work for the day. I did a couple of hours of blogging/writing/email before the Internet stopped working. Our service randomly goes out from time-to-time, but it usually starts back up in an hour or two. It’s annoying, but no big deal. I had some errands to do, so I decided to run them while I waited for the internet to start working again.

Before I left the house, I ate some Greek yogurt with Sweet & Salty Gluten-Free Granola mixed in. I guess my OMG Pancakes didn’t hold me over like they normally do? Or maybe I was just hungry? I dunno, I needed a snack.

During my errands, I hit up the bank, CVS, and Marshalls, where I saw these adorable letters. Obviously, I needed to take a pic.

I also stopped by Whole Foods for some groceries, which included a delicious impulse buy: organic strawberries. There was a big, colorful display at the front of the store and they just looked so good. I needed to buy some, and I am so glad that I did. These organic strawberries were so incredibly sweet, juicy, and, of course, delicious!

Does anyone else think conventionally-grown strawberries don’t taste like anything? Organic strawberries actually have flavor! Same goes with carrots. I always used to eat (conventional) baby carrots and then one day I ate an organic carrot. Mind blown.

When I got home, I made a fabulous strawberry snack. I used a grapefruit spoon to dig out the center of some strawberries and then filled them with Laughing Cow cinnamon cream cheese. OMG, delicious!!! Little bites of heaven!!

After I ate my snack, I checked on the Internet, which still wasn’t working. Grrr. I did the whole unplug the router, wait 5 minutes, plug it in again, but had no luck. I eventually called Comcast and asked them to reset the modem, which worked if I hard-wired my laptop, but the wireless still wasn’t working. I wasted enough time messing around with the Internet, so I worked on my laptop on the floor of the living room for most of the afternoon. When Mal got home, he miraculously fixed it. I have no idea what he did, but I’m glad he did it!

Question of the Day

How long could you go without the Internet?

I love the Internet and everything that goes along with it (Pinterest? Instagram? Hello), but I honestly think I could go awhile without it. When Mal and I went on our cruise last year and we couldn’t use our phones, I missed having the Internet for the first day or so, but, by the end of the cruise, I really enjoyed being able to completely unplug. Realistically, I think I could go about week before I really started to miss the Internet.

P.S. Tomorrow is National Donut Day! Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme are giving away free donuts tomorrow!

  1. We cancelled our cable and internet recently because Comcast was being a bunch of punks and screwing with our bill every month! It’s honestly been really nice! We’ve noticed we’ve been getting outside a lot more and getting more done around the house.

We’re going to need to get it again when I start my Master’s this fall because I don’t want to have to go to Starbucks every time I have work to do. Although, it wouldn’t be SO bad 😉

    1. I swear Comcast pulls that sh*t on purpose! I have never, ever, switched to automatic payments because if you don’t look over every nickel and dime on that bill they sneak in little charges that are “mistakes”. I’ve been double-charged, charged for service fees, charged for extra equipment that I don’t actually have, and every time I’ve called they’re like “oops! we’ll credit you next month”. All the people who don’t pay close enough attention though…highway robbery I tell you!

  2. Tina,

This has absolutely nothing to do with your blog post, but I’ve been dealing with horrible stomach issues for the past 7 years. I recently got fed up with conventional doctors via the military and have decided to see a functional medicine MD. I found one about an hour from my house via Primaldocs.com, and although I haven’t seen her yet, all of her youtube videos about her practice are very intriguing. I also just got done talking with someone with her clinic to go over the initial appt, and they said that her place was often the “end of the road” for many folks who have tried EVERYTHING (or least it seems). She takes in clients from all over the world (you would have to fly in for the initial visit, but then could do follow up appts via skype. She is an actually md, so she isn’t a quack. She is outside of my insurance network, so I will have to pay everything up front, then get reimbursed, but like you, I’m so desperate for a cure!! Anyway, the point of this is to ask you if you have gone this route or not. Would you even consider it? I read in one of your past blog posts that you were frustrated with your insurance and still on medication. I’m at that point too!

    1. I absolutely would consider it. I’m actually working with a different (non-western) doc now. I’m getting a bunch of tests done first, so, hopefully, we can figure out what’s going on. Western medicine isn’t working for me, so I figured I should check out some other options. Have people had success with the doc you’re considering?

      1. @Tina: YES! Which makes me hopeful. I’m trying to not get too excited b/c everything else that I have gotten excited about over the last few years has never panned out completely, but she really seems to know her stuff, and she runs all kinds of tests (complete stool, blood, urine tests that test for hormone issues, parasites, nutrient deficiencies, genetics, etc.) on her new clients. This is her website just in case your doc doesn’t work out. 😉 http://austinultrahealth.com I’m planning on covering this whole thing on my blog because I really feel like I can help others. I haven’t been that open with my readers regarding all of my struggles like I should have been. Thank you for sharing your journey on your blog!

  3. I wouldn’t last long without internet. We don’t have cable so i watch all my shows via internet, i’m a facebook addict, love youtube and watch it everyday and i wouldn’t be able to read your amazing blog everyday!

  4. I love my internet and I always get so frustrated when it goes out in my apartment but its sort of nice because it forces me to run some errands or sit down with a book. Also, free donuts! Don’t tell me that! (so excited)

  5. Life without the internet can be so frustrating. And if I think about that….I feel sad that so many of us are so dependent on it. I’m not so old that I can’t remember living a pretty good life without it. Oh well…gotta roll with the punches and enjoy the day…connected or not. Have a good one Tina.

  6. I went without internet for essentially 10 days the past couple of weeks, all in California actually! There are still off the grid spots to go. Conventional strawberries are pretty tasteless. I took a pic of strawberry fields in central CA last week because they are so nasty looking, 2 feet from the highway. People would be blown away to see the actual strawberry fields…

  7. I have kind of a random question. Do your nut butters contain any salt and sugar? I really WANT to like totally natural plain ground up nuts but I just can’t!

  8. Can’t stand not having the internet! I feel isolated from the world when mine is down. How did we ever use to know what was going on?? 🙂 Your strawberry snack looks yummy!!

  9. I hate to go without the internet. I think I had to go two days without it once, and I felt so disconnected, but it also felt kind of good.

  10. Totally agree, conventional strawberries have ZERO flavor. I bought organic strawberries a few weeks ago when I had a major craving for some because that was all the store had and I was convinced right then and there that organic is the only way to go when it comes to strawberries. They actually tasted like a strawberry rather than some sour ball of nothing.

  11. I move a lot and just did so did not have internet at home and only could use it when I went to Starbucks or similar and I felt like I was going through withdrawl.
For myself I watch very little if any tv on a daily basis and it helps me to distract to browse on random sites or go on forums and blogs.

  12. You’re totally right about the organic vs. conventional tastes! Crazy/scary, right?

  13. I hate not having internet. I always have the feeling that I’m going to miss something important. Recently, I was at the seminar in the Alps with no phone signal and almost non existing internet conection. My best friend got engaged and it took her 3 days to manage to contact me and let me know
