Hello, hello!

Yesterday afternoon, Murphy and I went to the nearby senior home to make some pug visits. We hadn’t been in a couple of weeks, so everyone was especially excited to see us him. I mean, his pug face is ridiculously adorable after all.

After visiting, I had a major craving for green juice, so I whipped up a batch. In the mix: green apple, carrots, cucumber, celery, kale, and ginger.


A little while later, I snacked on some sweet potato tortilla chips (wicked good) with goat cheese. Awesome combo.


And while making dinner, I ate some watermelon. I never really ate lunch yesterday, but snacked all day long.



On the agenda for dinner was Grilled Chicken Salad with Goat Cheese and Plums, which turned out quite well. I really loved the dressing.


My evening concluded with some cinnamon cream cheese-stuffed strawberries and cuddling on the couch with Mal and Murphy, who was pooped. His job is exhausting.

Three Questions Thursday

It’s Thursday, which means it’s Three Questions Thursday! Here goes!

What type of gluten-free bread do you buy?

Gluten-free bread is not cheap, so I buy whatever is on sale at the grocery store. I like Udi’s the best, but I’ll eat any brand.

I love your black and white duffle bag. Where is it from?

Thanks! It was the swag bag from the Fitness Blogger Meet & Tweet event last year, so I’m not sure where you can buy it, but the brand is Sonia Kashuk, who works with Target. There are some similar duffle bags on the Target website if you are interested in buying one.

I was wondering if you had any advice on how to start/get freelance work? Like how did you start writing for Health? I’m interested in doing some health/nutrition/fitness articles and I have no idea where to start! Any advice you have to offer would be awesome!

I’ve been really lucky with the freelance opportunities that have come my way over the years. Companies and brands typically find me through CNC and then ask me to write for them. I’ve written for Health, Fitsugar, The Supplemental, Merrell, The Laughing Cow, Pretzel Crisps, and Wayfair, just to name a few. I’ve also contributed recipes and quotes to lots of online and print publications. Thanks to CNC, I haven’t had to do much pitching or reaching out. My blog acts as an active resume for me, so companies see examples of my work and things just go from there.

As for advice, here are some tips to help get you started!

Tip #1: If you have a blog, make sure it features your best work. Put a lot of time into your blog posts””your content, photos, the whole bit. Companies are always on the lookout for freelancers and contributors, so be sure your blog/work is looking its best when they come looking.

Tip #2: Make samples of your work easy to find. I have a Press page on CNC (under About), which features all of my freelance projects as well as any publications that have quoted me. If a company wants to work with you, be sure to make it easy for them. (Same goes for your contact info!) Having examples of your work all in one place is also a great way to showcase what your writing is like.

Tip #3: Reach out to publications/brands that you want to write for. Make connections with the companies you want to work with. Send an inquiry email, interact on their Facebook page or Twitter, check to see if their company website has a blog and offer to write for it””you never know what might happen! My gig with Health, for example, came about because of an email I sent to the magazine inquiring about writing opportunities. Back in my early days of blogging, I emailed a few different magazines about freelance work. At the same time, Health was looking for someone to contribute to their Feel Great Weight program and a few of their editors were reading my blog (see Tip #1), so things just worked out. I’ve written for Health for 4 years now.

Tip #4: Don’t be afraid to start small. When I first started blogging, I wrote a number of freelance pieces for free or free product. For example, I wrote a blog post for the Eggland’s Best blog in exchange for free egg coupons and spatulas. Of course, I can’t pay my mortgage or medical bills with free egg coupons and spatulas (definitely not spatulas), but those writing opportunities were stepping stones for my next freelance gig and so on. I also established a great relationship with Eggland’s Best, which led to a “Live Well” challenge, a magazine feature, a trip to BlogHer as a brand ambassador, and a trip to the . As you can see, some incredible opportunities came from a single “free” post!
