I woke up cranky this morning. πŸ‘Ώ

However, I’ve heard that the power of positive thinking can do wonders for a bad mood– basically, “fake it until you make it.” This morning, for example, I was in a bad mood about waking up early to exercise. Instead of being poopy pants about it, I decided to “fake” being upbeat and cheerful, which (surprisingly) triggered feelings of happiness in me. Soon, I wasn’t faking it anymore. I’m sure that the feel-good endorphins from my workout helped too, but even still, I’m starting to really believe in the power of positive thinking!

If IΒ allow my (negative) feelings toΒ influenceΒ my thinking about a particular situation, I ended up reacting (negatively) to them. Instead, if I decide that IΒ want to feel a certain way (“fake it until I make it”), it seems that these (positive) actions create authentic (positive) feelings.Β It’s a very interesting concept, right? I was truly surprised by my results this morning and just wanted to share. Anyway, onto breakfast!

I started my day with feel-good Barney Butter on a toasted hemp bagel. Mal also ate a hemp bagel for breakfast this morning and liked it a lot! I’m pretty sure he’s a fan now!

On the side, I had a very ripe nectarine.

I’m having coffee with an old friend from college, who wants my advice about blogging. It’s cool/crazy that someone wants to talk to me about blogging! πŸ˜€ Anyway, I am using my lunch break to meet with her, so I won’t be blogging about lunch until this evening, but I have a fun lunchtime post for you guys anyway.   1. So true! Despite not having control over many things in life, we *do* have control over whether we want to be in a positive or in a negative mood. Not that we’re always going to be happy *all* the time or that things won’t effect us, but we really can influence our attitude towards the rest of the day. Thanks for the reminder! πŸ˜€

    I keep an upbeat attitude in my day-to-day life by including little splurges where I can, or planning fun events to look forward to. Little splurges might mean buying myself a latte from starbucks, or taking a bubble bath, or spending an hour in my pj’s with a good magazine. πŸ˜€

  2. Great advice! I needed that reminder, as someone who has to get up early every day despite the fact that I often don’t get very much sleep with a fairly new baby in the house. I definitely have to put on a happy face for her when she gets up! πŸ™‚

  3. this was a nice reminder for me, since i sometimes wake up on the wrong side of the bed πŸ˜‰ i’ve tried to practice that before – even if i’m in a bad mood, i try to be nice to other people on my way to work, and i usually feel better by the time i get to my desk! love that little cutie pug!

    Honestly, I suck at being positive and upbeat. Although, yesterday when I wasn’t feelin it I did drink a retarded amount of coffee which eventually put me in a better mood. Like the first poster said, I do buy myself little things when I just can’t get out of my funk tho πŸ˜›

  5. So much of my job is coming across as cheerful/inspirational for my students… even on the worst days, the faking it is all I need to actually feel happy again! One of my neighbors just got a pug, and its seriously the funniest little thing!

  6. That is so funny,I just learned about the concept you described in intro to psych class! I try to keep an upbeat and positive attitude by cranking up some tunes when I’m feeling down. Cheerful music can really improve your mood!

  7. If I’m feeling cranky or down, I just think about really how good life actually is, and how bad it really could be. There are SO many people that are worse off – who are sick, dying, at war, etc. – it makes it easy to be grateful for what I do have and puts whatever it is I’m cranky about into perspective!

  8. I’ve found that a positive attitude really can change a bad mood around. But it’s very hard to do. Once I get into a bad mood, I prefer to wallow in my gloominess. It’s hard to make myself act happy.

I try to take it one day at a time, or sometimes one hour at a time on really tough days!And plan out little treats, whether it be something delicious or a nice bath and a glass of wine at the end of the day. Like Kristin said, it doesn’t take much for me to have some perspective as well- just turning on the news or looking around on my way to work makes me regroup a little. Doesn’t necessarily mean that I am suddenly Miss Sunshine though, I think its also really important sometimes to honor and listen to whatever is going on. Everyone is entitled to a little crankiness in this hectic world!

    It’s really hard for me to keep an upbeat attitude during most days because my job is nowhere near my passions, so the days are long. But, I do try my best and it does help!

  11. i do this all too often!! but i force myself to fake it till i make it- so that i dont let myself get over run with negative feelings, its not good!

    Tina- is the blogger summit going to be in boston? and also, was looking at Healthy Tipping Point, Caitlin was listing the activities, if the summit is in boston i would love to volunteer myself to help lead an event, like a dance class or something? anyway, let me know if that might be of some help or if you think anyone would be interested in it?

  12. I have been trying to use the power of positive thinking lately, too! I think it does work….I used it this morning when I didn’t want to get up at 5am to go for my run, but I am so glad I convinced myself to go!Have a great coffee date!

  13. people ask me all the time how i am so positive, and i can honestly say i don’t know why i am, i just am. maybe i was born with it? i always see the positive in any situation, but allow for sadness too.

    in other news, LOVE that you used “poopy pants” in a serious sentence. you’re awesome.

  15. I use to fake it until you make it mantra when I have to speak publicly, but to get by a bad mood I listen to music that makes me happy or do something that I enjoy like walk my dog or bake πŸ™‚

    Exercise ALWAYS puts me in a good mood!! I just posted on that last night haha.

    It’s so true. We can choose to be happy and positive, or we can choose to be angry and negative.

  19. I endorse your line of thinking. I actually have been reading the book “The Secret” and that is basically what the book says. You make your own happiness. You control your mood. It’s so true. πŸ™‚ Glad you are feeling better.

    I usually use the method you use too. There are ALWAYS happy thoughts in my mind. It’s just my choice to make them dominate.

  20. I am a very positive person. When challenges come, or I feel my mood slipping – I just reflect for a bit on why it might be happening, then just reframe my thinking about it. It takes way more energy to dwell and mope on things than to find a solution.
    Plus, I truly believe that the more positivity you project, the more comes your way.

  21. if I wake up in a slump I always turn on some good music, try and wear something I feel good in, and get a good laugh in somewhere. Its hard, but I try to force myself to think of something positive, or try and figure out why I’m being a grump. Usually it’s for no reason at all so I force myself out of the feeling by doing something I love, or snacking on something healthy, but satisfying and comforting. I hope your day takes a turn for the better!!

    I try to approach life with a positive attitude at all times. In my life I’ve had a lot of challenges and to be honest I’m just happy to be here and I am so grateful for all the wonderful joys and gifts that I encounter every day.

    If I am feeling negative I try to do something good for myself – talk to my fiance or a friend, take a walk, do yoga, get a pedicure, make soup and then I find that often the negative feelings will pass.

  24. I agree with Kristin too. When I’m cranky, I try to take a step back and remember how lucky I am and to be grateful. So many others are struggling much more. I’ve also learned that life is a rollercoaster and today may be a little rough but tomorrow is bound to be better. Positive thinking is key!

  25. Fake it till you make it usually works for me πŸ™‚ I find putting on some good tunes..waking up with a shower and some yummy body wash…doin some relaxing yoga..and makin a good meal always puts me in a better mood! πŸ™‚

  28. I always try to remember that even though I can’t control every situation in my life, I can control how I feel and react to it. I feel that if I approch something with a negative attitude I’ll most likely get a negative outcome. I try to be positive as much as possible because life is too short to be unhappy! πŸ™‚

  31. I try to think of how much worse it would be, I also tell myself whatever I’m upset about isn’t that big a deal and it won’t even matter in a week. I also try to think of funny stuff…like my co-worker saying the most random things or annoying weird news stories form the internet.

    To stay positive, I think about how other people in the world are probably having a much tougher day than I am and if it is worth really being upset about. This usually makes me realize that what I am upset about isn’t worth it and I should just be joyful- a lot of people have it much worse!

  34. With exercise positive thinking has been key to getting me running again. I lean on the Bible verse: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things”. That always helps me to focus on the positive even when faced with insurmountable odds. God is on to something there!

  36. This is a timely question for me! I’ve been mysteriously lightheaded for almost a month now. I had to back out of a marathon and have seen so many doctors that my head is spinning, so looking for the positive in every situation has kept me sane.

    – Backing out of my favorite marathon ever saved me hotel charges.
    – Seeing all these doctors means I fulfilled my NY resolution to get a PCP and start monitoring my heart issues.
    – I spent a ton to repair my car last week but all it would have taken was 1 hot day and the entire engine would’ve gone, so really I was pretty lucky.

    It probably sounds overly simplistic, but it’s helped keep my physical issues from clouding my mood.

  37. Tina!!!! I babysat a PUG over the weekend!!!! I had never thought I liked pugs,… but you know what,… he was AMAZING. i would sit down and he’d just sleep on my lap. sooo lovable. easy and definitely a people dog. i even found his snorting and snoring to be hilarious-adorable. i put up pictures of him over last weekend’s post so check them out πŸ™‚ hope your day is getting better!

  38. As someone who is naturally cranky (no, I’m serious — I frown in like 95% of my baby thru toddler pics!) — I have pretty much mastered the art of forced positive thinking. And it works! I really believe that we get what we put out there, and every time I force a smile and force positive energy into what I’m doing, it comes right back to me!
