New Appreciation for the Elliptical

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Good morning! Happy Hump Day! I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday. Just 3 days until Mal and I are in Hawaii! O.M.G.

Yesterday morning’s breakfast was Greek yogurt with blueberries and chicken sausage with a glass of green juice on the side.

I also drank a glass of Dandy Blend with coconut milk mixed. Coconut milk is the bomb.

After breakfast, I spent a few hours working and then headed to LA Fitness for a workout, but, of course, I needed to stop by Target first.

Unnecessary trips to Target since joining my new gym: 4.

After Target (I made it out spending less than $50, which was a miracle), I hit up the elliptical at the gym to test out a workout for next week’s Health post. I jotted down a rough workout with lots of intervals at home and then fine-tuned it at the gym. When I added in the Strides Per Minute (SPM), it made the workout so much harder because I couldn’t slack off. By the end, I was huffing and puffing and my quads and gluts burned. I definitely finished the workout having a new appreciation for the elliptical!

After spending 30 minutes on the elliptical, I headed over to the treadmill and walked on an incline for 30 minutes while I watched Property Brothers, which is my new favorite home show. Every time I watch it, I tell Mal I want the Property Brothers to come visit us, so they can find and remodel a new house for us. I love their work, and it’s amazing to see their vision come to life, especially when the houses they buy are such sh*tholes. Ha!

Tough Love: Bars, Bands & Blindfolds Bootcamp

MySportsClub peeps (BSC, NYSC, WSC, PSC): I just heard about a crazy-cool class that is being offered at select clubs this month. It’s called “Tough Love: Bars, Bands & Blindfolds Bootcamp:”

In honor of Valentine’s Day we are spicing up group fitness training with our new Tough Love bootcamp designed to heighten your senses and get your heart racing – in more ways than one. Using high-intensity interval training (HIIT), partner relays, blindfolded plyometrics, and moves with bands and blindfolds (a la 50 Shades of Grey), our no-holds-barred Tough Love: Bars, Bands & Blindfolds Bootcamp will build your stamina, strengthen your core and set your muscles on fire. Bring a friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, or come single and ready to mingle. This class turns up the heat to help you bring your “A-game” to the boudoir!

Sounds interesting and fun, right? Non-members are welcomed too!!! If anyone takes it, please let me know how it is!

Questions of the Day

What’s your favorite home show?

What piece of equipment at the gym is undervalued in your opinion?

P.S. Be sure to enter my Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt! You can win a pair of custom Reebok sneakers!

  1. So exciting that you are off to Hawaii! I actually love the cross trainer – it can work either legs or arms and core or all at once, you can read on it or watch TV and upping the resistance and SPM makes a very sweaty workout!

  2. I’m excited for your elliptical workout! I’ve been doing the same one once or twice a week from Fitnessista and would like another to rotate in.
Is that really your Target? It looks like its out of a movie! Ours basically looks like a Kmart 🙂

  3. I LOVE Property Brothers. They are one of the only shows out there that reeeeally listen to the people about what they want in their new home and don’t add in crazy stuff for the shock factor. I remember when Trading Spaces was on, and one of the designers glued hay all over the walls. Crazy!

  4. When I lived in Philly, I belonged to LA Fitness and there was also a Target strategically placed next door and of course I always “need” something at Target. Luckily my CrossFit gym in Bozeman is in the middle of nowhere, eliminating the temptation. I love the idea of the tough love bootcamp! I would totally try it – if I was in a relationship and if there was one offered in Montana!

  5. I love a good elliptical workout! I will def have to try this one! I love property brothers and their other show buying and selling but property brothers is the better one. I want them to decorate my future home, I love their modern style!

  6. So excited to try the elliptical workout. Treadmill isn’t my jam, but I’m all about the elliptical. I think people under appreciate rowing! Such an epic workout but I never see anyone rowing at my gym!

  7. I like Property Brothers but I also just found Cousins on Call (used to be Kitchen Cousins). Two guys from New Jersey in a family business and they are fairly easy on the eyes too.
I agree with Rachel, I never see anyone on the rowing machine at the gym.

  8. Glancing at that workout, it looks as if you are using on of the ellipticals in which you can increase intensity and the level. Those ones are awesome!! My legs and bootay are always on fire!!

I could never have a Target next to my gym like that!! Too much temptation!

  9. You have two big (and FUN!) trips in your near future! So jealous! I feel like the elliptical can be overused at times, but if it’s used properly, it can be an awesome cardio workout! I think the rowing machines are often undervalued! Those things always get my heart pumpin’ and my arms feel it afterward!

  10. The thing that bothers me the most about Property Brothers (although I love the Brothers and think they are SO SMART) is how unrealistic it is. They take people into these houses, telling them beforehand that they plan to fix it up, and the people are like, “Ugh, this wall color is AWFUL!” — obviously they are going to change the PAINT! Come on! It’s almost like these people are really stupid or they are playing it up for the cameras. I’m guessing it’s the latter.

  11. I do agree that the elliptical is undervalued, but when I was on it the other day for an hour, changing up the resistance and incline, it was TOUGH! It’s definitely great for cross-training and working up buckets of sweat.

  12. I will watch just about anything on HGTV EXCEPT Love It or List It. I think she is incredibly inconsiderate of people’s requests and ESPECIALLY their budget. I haven’t seen a single one where she stayed on budget. That is what is so great about Property Brothers. They do everything they can do respect what the people want AND what they want to spend.

    The Kidless Kronicles

  13. I used to love the elliptical, but then I got way bored. Actually, I got bored with most cardio, hah. So now I might use it maybe 1x/week for steady state cardio 20 mins.

Love watching shows while working out though!

  14. I’m sure getting away from the snow will be fabulous. Hawaii…I dream of white, sandy beaches. I can’t wait to hear and see all about it! Living vicariously…

I used to love Property Virgins (I hope to be one soon…but not on the show). 🙂 Ever since they changed hosts I’m not as into it. I also like Curb Appeal but I’m not sure it’s still on. The Property Brothers can do anything they’d like to my place! 😉 I’ll just sit and watch them.

Thanks for the elliptical workout! It’s still a valued piece of gym equipment in my book. No one uses the stair stepper at my gym…well at least, I never see anyone use it. I don’t use it either but I have the equivalent of 10 flights of stairs at my office and I try to take them anytime I go somewhere – up or down. No need for a stair stepper!

  15. Elliptical and arc trainer are 2 of my favorite cardio workouts. My first love is skipping rope 🙂 I love home remodel shows. I’m really visual so it’s nice to get ideas. I will have to check out Property Brothers. Thx for the tip! Have a safe and awesome trip in Hawaii.

  16. I’m so glad you put together an elliptical workout! I noticed on the Biggest Loser last week Bob Harper had a shirt with an elliptical on it that said “FAIL.” I was kind of put off by it beause first of all, I think we should encourage any type of exercise and second, you can get a great workout on the elliptical! I looked it up and it seemed to be a Crossfit thing, which is too bad because I love Crossfit too.

  17. I need to give the ET more of a chance. It used to be the ONLY cardio machine I would use but now I never seem to find any interest in it. Maybe a tough workout would change that!

  18. Hi Tina, I am sure you already have lots of plans for your trip to Hawaii, but I wanted to reach out to you because I’ve lived on Oahu for 6 years. If you want any tips on where to go (or where to avoid), please e-mail me. You will have a great time here!

  19. I have watched a few shows of Property Brothers for the sole reason that my best friend and I think they’re highly attractive. HELLO! But I have to say that hands down, my favorite home show would be House Hunters International. So obsessed with all of the places that they go all around the world and what houses in those countries look like. I hope to embark on a journey like that someday! But for a home renovation show, I could pick Flip this House. I don’t have a really creative mind so I’m mind-blown by a lot of the things they end up doing to the houses!
