I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

Good morning, friends! Happy FRIDAY to you!

How was your week? We had a nice one over here, but, wow, it flew by. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s the holiday season or what, but it definitely whizzed by. Anyway, I wanted to share some highlights from our life lately, so here we go!

I went to KFIT on Monday and felt like garbage during the workout. It was my fifth day in a row of exercise, which is just too much for me. I normally stick to three days or less, but I was feeling pretty good… until I started to work out. Woof. Even still, it was a fun workout, and I’m glad that I was able to work on my pull-ups. They’re coming along!

These amazing holiday running socks arrived just in time for the 5K that I’m running this weekend. I ran the same race last year with some KFIT ladies, and, my gosh, we had a blast, so I can only imagine what this year will bring! There’s 40 of us this time!!


Our Super Glue is coming in quite handy this holiday season. We *thought* we hung all of our breakable Christmas tree ornaments high enough and out-of-reach of tiny toddler hands, but Q-Man still manages to snag them. And throw them. (Is throwing everything a stage?)

Quinn loved playing with the computer (and mouse) at the library earlier this week. I loved watching his little brain work. It’s crazy how much he picks up nowadays!

Our little peanut is also getting quite adventurous. He’s climbing up (and down) everything lately!

My friend Blain (remember him?) found this photo of us from my Boston bachelorette party. (I had one in Las Vegas too!) Oooh, memories. We had some really good times together back in the day!

I reconnected with a friend from college and it was so nice. Even though we hadn’t seen each other in years, we picked up right where we left off. She has a 7-month old son, so we took him and Quinn for a walk at World’s End in Higham, which is such a beautiful place. I can’t believe it was my first time there!

Quinn is teething like crazy right now. His mouth is full of molars coming in. Poor guy, but he’s dealing with it pretty well, and Mama enjoyed quite a few cuddle session this week!

I’m taking part in a clinical study about the effects of diet on the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Remember the study that I mentioned a couple of months ago? Well, they changed the parameters, and I’m “sick” enough to participate! Yay! But, sadly, I went in for a procedure yesterday and was informed that I’m in the control group, not the experiment group. Whomp whomp. Of course, I’m bummed, but, hey, it’s in the name of science, and I’m more than happy to participate if it helps other UC patients. Long story short, I’m still in the study, but I’ll keep doing what I’m doing with regard to my diet for the next 6 weeks. Thankfully, at the end of the study, I’ll meet with an RD and learn more about what the study diet was all about, so I guess it’s the best of both worlds. I can still drink wine, so that’s a win, right? Day 7: Tell each other a holiday joke

Mal’s joke: What do you get when you cross a snowman with a vampire? Frostbite.

My joke: What do Santa’s elves learn at school? The elphabet.

Day 8: Share 3 things you love about the other person + Quinn and Murphy

Day 9: Watch a Christmas movie

Mal and I watched Love Actually after Quinn went to bed.

Day 10: Donate a gift

Mal’s school and KFIT both adopt a family at Christmastime, so we signed up to contribute.

What’s your maximum number of workouts before you take a rest day?

  1. We are going to get our Christmas tree! I don’t know how many ornaments we’ll put on it this year though! (We have a 1 year old Vizsla and a 2 year old toddler!)

  2. That’s a bummer you are in the control group but a bonus that you can still drink wine! My son is obsessed with climbing up the stairs and then climbing down again so he can go back up. It’s so funny!

  3. Yay for visiting the library! I love Q’s curiosity. Isn’t amazing how toddlers can figure out technology? My 4 year old niece knows how to work my iPad almost better than me!

    I want to know how many days In a row people workout! I read about someone starting a running streak – just run 1.5 miles a day for 30 days. They’ve kept at it for more than year. I’m still adjusting to a new workout schedule…haven’t figured it out yet.

  4. Oh my gosh, too funny about the belly button LOL! I’m sure my little guy will do the same thing with our pup once he’s old enough to figure things out 😉 And yay for wine!! I hope they get some good findings from the study that can help out your UC in the future.

  5. That’s great that you’re able to participate in the study! Like you said, someone has to be in the control group—and it has the potential to really make a difference for others in the long run.

    I took yesterday, Day 10 of my 100 Reps Fitness Challenge, off without planning on it. Can you believe I created a fitness challenge and didn’t schedule ANY rest days for myself?!

    But since I still want to get in all my reps, I think I’ll just do yesterday’s set of reps over the course of the next couple days along with my usual reps. Whee fitness!

  6. I don’t really have a limit of how many days I workout without’s most like I take one when I need one! Sometimes that means 0 in a week and sometimes that’s 3 or more!

  7. I have a lot of variety in my workouts- running, intervals, spin, weight training circuits. My rule of thumb is to not take more than 2 days in a row off so that means if I am still really sore I at least like to get a yoga class in or go for a shake out run.

  8. You’re such a trooper being in the control group. I’ve been there and it’s like, wait that’s not why I signed up! lol

    I guess the bright side is that if the diet they’re testing turns out NOT to help, (or, potentially worsen symptoms), you don’t have to be the one to experience it. If it does help, you can try it (safely) after the study is over.

    On a totally different note, those photos of Quinn & Murphy totally cracked me up 🙂

  9. It kinda depends on the type of workouts. I can do a yoga type everyday and be fine, but HIIT, cardio, or lifting its about 3 to 4 days max.
    Love the ‘belly button’! At first, I was like- dogs have belly buttons?! But… Then I realized that I’m an idiot and read the rest of it!!! HA!!!

  10. Oh my gosh Murphy with his eyes closed as Quinn pokes his “belly button”…SO funny! I usually will do 3-4 days in a row before rest. I teach at work and with my own workouts on the side, lots of rest is really needed!

  11. Hi Tina, Yes, with super intense workouts, I’d say four is my maximum in a row. In fact, I went to yoga today, even though I actually wanted to do something tougher, but I knew my body needed the recovery. That’s so cool you caught up with an old friend.   13. As a rule, I never do more than 2 days in a row. VERY rarely 3, but if I do then I take 2 days rest after that. I generally can’t workout more than 4 days in a week anyway, especially since my workout of choice is CrossFit 🙂
