Healthy mustard swaps? You bet! I swear they’re a lot more exciting than they sound! And just in time for the July 4th holiday!
When French’s reached out to me about working together and helping to promote their Yellow Mustard and Pinterest page, I was up for the challenge. Mustard is a condiment that I’ve always liked, so I wanted to write a post that featured creative ways to use it, especially when it comes to making healthy condiment swaps.
As you know, some condiments””we’re talking mayonnaise, sour cream, and salad dressing just to name a few””are high in calories and fat (sometimes trans fats), may contain crazy-chemically ingredients, and can derail your healthy eating efforts if you’re not careful. That said, here are a bunch of healthy mustard swaps that will give your next meal a fresh and flavorful taste without adding a lot of calories or anything artificial!
Mayonnaise
One of the easiest ways to cut calories and fat is ditching the mayo for a more low-calorie condiment like mustard. One tablespoon of mayonnaise can have as many as 110 calories, and the same amount of French’s Yellow Mustard has 0 calories. That’s quite the difference, huh? Can’t nix the mayo all together? Try halving (or reducing by a third) the amount of mayo in a recipe and replacing with it mustard. Try this in potato salad, pasta salad, egg salad, tuna salad, on sandwiches, and more!
Sour Cream
Like mayonasise, sour cream can be a calorie-bomb in certain dishes and recipes. Lighten-up by replacing part or all of the sour cream in your recipes with mustard. Try part-mustard sour cream in Mexican dishes, dipping chicken tenders in a sauce made with sour cream and mustard, or replacing some of the sour cream with mustard in your creamy, cheesy appetizer dips and sauces for a fun and tangy flavor.
Salad Dressings and Marinades
Some salad dressings on the market are downright scary””we’re talking chemically ingredients, trans fats, and loads of sugar””which means adding dressing (even the fat-free varieties!) to your salads doesn’t do you any favors. Instead, try using French’s Yellow Mustard to make flavorful homemade dressings and marinades. It’ll bring wholesome goodness and a fresh, tangy taste to your meals! Barbecue Sauce
Barbecue sauce is another condiment that is typically loaded with calories and sugar. Try replacing some of the barbecue sauce in your recipes with Yellow Mustard for a new and improved barbecue flavor! It’ll lighten up your dish and add a more complex flavor. Be sure to try this barbecue-mustard flavor combination. I bet you’ll love it!
