It’s Friday, Right?

Goooooood morning!

Man, I am tired from last night’s VinoVoyage! Let’s just say that I enjoyed myself immensely! And sampled a zillion different wines!! πŸ˜‰

I’ll have a full recap of the event later today!

Mal stayed up late and attended the VinoVoyage with me last night, so I offered to make him whipped banana oats for breakfast. They’re his favorite! πŸ˜€

I don’t know what I was thinking this morning, but I ended up messing up our oats! I added way too much soy milk, which meant I needed to add more oats to “dry-out” the batch. Oops! 😳 I’ve made stovetop oats thousands of time now– I still have no clue what I was thinking! Oh well. I’ll probably eat oats for lunch too!

Cookie Friday Inspiration

How delicious does this look?!?

Jennifer writes: “This is the signature LADY M crepe cake in NYC. It’s 20 paper thin crepes with pillowy whipped vanilla buttercream in between each layer. Divine!

Question of the Day

Have you had a “duh” moment in the kitchen? What happened?

  1. After eating two helpings of a delicious trifle last night, there will be no cookie friday for me. πŸ™
I’m sure I’ve had lots of kitchen blunders but I cannot think of the worst. I left the flour out of an apple pie so the filling was runny.

  2. OMG, that crepe cake looks SO amazing. I’m about to get on the train to NY for this. Haha.
Hmm weird about oats today. Where you hungover? πŸ˜‰ I’ve definitely had moments where I was randomly screwing up seemingly easy tasks. Hopefully it will get better from here in πŸ™‚

  3. Not a “duh” moment in my own kitchen, but I worked at Friendly’s in high school and once served a banana split without the banana. Whoops.

  4. My best duh moment in the kitchen was Thanksgiving a couple of years ago…
I made an apple pie for dessert, using one of those aluminum pans instead of a glass one. I put it on the stove once it came out of the oven. Then I turned on the burner to boil some water. Turns out it was the wrong burner and the pie caught on fire! My roommate and I had no idea. Luckily, one of our dinner guests arrived in the nick of time and put the fire out!

  5. Once I added Cumin instead of cinnamon in a batch of banana muffins. I noticed as I was cleaning up the kitchen but thought maybe it wouldn’t taste that bad, but they did *gag*

  6. Wait, you had to bride Mal with oats to go out on the town and taste free wine?! πŸ™‚

I have also screwed up oats. Usually it’s when I’m cooking for more than two people. I’m so used to doing it for two that somehow the extra people create issues that are above my mathematical capabilities first thing in the morning. Duh!

  7. I once put chili powder into a recipe, thinking it was paprika (I buy my spices in bulk and use them out of the bags that I fill at the store. These two bags were unlabeled). The recipe turned out quite spicy. Quite spicy, which wasn’t the right flavor for what I had prepared at all.

  8. not so “duh” as butterfingers…. i dropped a jar of spaghetti sauce that shattered and splattered white cabinets and all the appliances. that thing had some range! it was on knives, in cracks everywhere. we had to pull the oven out to clean it. sweet one.

  9. Reading everyone’s stories made me feel better about my own. I realized a long time ago that it doesn’t matter how many times I screw up in the kitchen- as long as I keep trying. My first big eff up: I tried to make balsamic vinegar dipped chicken breasts, but I didn’t realize the vinegar would smell so bad as it burned off. Not only was the chicken nasty, but the baking sheet was destroyed and my parents’ house smelled nasty for a week.

More recently (ahem, last week), I was making a peach and blackberry cobbler and forgot to buy the blackberries. I also made baked potato chips but put the oven on broil high on accident when i was going to put the oven on. It turned into black potato chips in 5 minutes. yuck.

  10. I have those moments daily in the kitchen. I am happier with the happy accidents when they happen. So, sometimes it is a good thing! The oats look yummy, though!

  11. Most recent “duh” moment in the kitchen…burning a boiling egg. Sounds impossible, but I did it! There was so much rotten-egg smelling smoke it set off the fire alarm much to the delight of the other 450 people in my building!
