Cats & Dogs

Happy FRIDAY, friends!! Is anyone else psyched for a 3-day weekend!?!

So, guess who locked themselves out of their apartment this morning?? 😯 THIS girl! I’m such a space cadet sometimes. 😕

You see, when I take Murphy for long walks, I just take my house key with me instead of my whole key chain. I use a hair tie to put the key around my wrist, so I can travel light. Well, I forgot to put it back on my key chain, so when I left the house to walk Murphy this morning, I ended up locking myself out. GAH!

Fortunately, Dave and Marie live right down the street, so I knocked on their door and used Dave’s phone to call Mal at school. Luckily, I caught my husband right before homeroom started and he drove home to let me into our apartment. Thankfully, it all worked out! I swear, there’s never a dull moment in my life. (I need to get it together!)

Breakfast

Before locking myself out for over an hour, I started my morning with Overnight Oats in a Jar.

IMG_0003.JPG

Overnight Oats in a Jar are just regular oats, soaked overnight, in a mostly-empty nut butter jar. The oats absorb the liquid (soy milk, water, etc.) that you add to them, so in the morning, you have a cool, mushy mess of oatmeal to enjoy. The base is typically oats, but you can also use oat bran, spelt flakes, granola, etc. The toppings as endless and you can add them the night before or the next morning–  either way works. So, add all of your ingredients to the jar the night before, let it sit in the fridge overnight, grab a spoon, and enjoy it in the morning. Simple as that. No cooking involved!

My mix this morning was 1/4 cup old-fashioned oats, 1/4 cup oat bran, 1 cup soy milk, raisins, chia seeds, and walnuts. Delicious.

I also had a glass of iced coffee with soy milk with breakfast.

It was very refreshing this morning! 😀

Cats & Dogs

It’s no surprise that I love pugs! Of course, I love Murphy, but I also love other people’s pugs and random pugs that I meet on the street. Ok, so maybe I am a tad obsessed. 😉

But, did you know that I also have a thing for orange cats? Before Murphy, the love of my life was a big orange cat named Corey. He passed away a few years ago, but he lived a very long and happy kitty life. (He was 17-years-old when he died.)

Like Murphy, Corey was a real character. He had so much personality! He constantly “talked” to us. He was always meowing about something! 😉

He was a really good cat, and I miss him a whole lot.

Question of the Day

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

P.S. I am hosting a giveaway over on Trading Up Downtown this morning!

  1. I’m a cat person and have never really like dogs, but as I get older and become more active, I think it’d be fun to have a dog to take out on runs or on hikes on my weekends- cats are good for down time and cuddling though- and they don’t take nearly as much attention as dogs.. for ease sake my vote is with a cat

  2. That’s exactly how I wear my house key when I’m running!! It’s the best. Then I can constantly check on it and not worry it’s falling off my shoe or something.

Allergic to both cats and dogs but love dogs 500x more.

  3. I had the most amazing cat growing up that I picked out at the pound. I named him peanut when I was 5 years old. My parents always talk about how Peanut would follow me around the block and later as I got older the neighborhood. His nickname was Peanut the Watch Kitty! I’m struggling to make great tasting oats. They always seem bland and not too tasty. How do you make such yummy tasting oats?

  4. Such a tough question because both dogs and cats are so cool in their own ways. I have one dog and one cat — my dog is my walking buddy and my cat, believe it or not, is my cuddling buddy. I’ve worked at the SPCA, as a dog groomer, and in a high end pet supply store, and I currently walk dogs and pet sit on the side, so I understand about being obsessed! What’s not to be obsessed about? Pets are awesome!

  5. I had a cat for most of my life who lived to be 19 and he was orange and white 🙂 I would say I used to be a cat person but 2 years ago we adopted our beagle mix Suzie and she’s the love of my life. But I still love cats, so I guess I’m both!

Love the overnight OAIJ. I just recently tried overnight oats and now I’m obsessed 😉

  6. What a sweet kitty! I am definitely a cat person. I have two cats now and the boy cat is the love of my life. He adores me and follows me around the whole house. My BF calls him “Fatty”. He’s a bit on the chubby side. 😉

  7. I’m a cat person! I like some dogs, but I’m more a cat person. I love my kitty, El Gato.

Maybe you can make an extra key to leave on a hair tie so you don’t have to take your house key off of your keyring every time you do a long walk with Murphy? or leave one at your neighbors. I keep an extra key to my neighbors apartment because she has a tendency to lock her self out.

  8. i love them both!!! i can’t get enough of animals!!! i have both a dog and a cat…however, my cat has the personality of a dog (snobby dog)… the both come running to the door when we get home! it’s the sweetest!

  9. I love that you’re a Pug person, since I’m a Pug person and let’s face it Pug owners…we’re special people! And by special I mean..nuts?!?
I like cats, I love dogs, and I live for Pugs 🙂

  10. Hey Tina!
I am definitely more of a dog person. A black Scottish Terrier is my dog of choice.
Don’t feel bad about locking yourself out….the other day I locked my car keys in my bedroom at 6:00 AM and ended up having to break down my door in order to not be late for work (LITERALLY BREAK DOWN MY DOOR!) haha. Unfortunately now my landlord just informed me that it was a custom door and so I will have to pay a couple hundred $ to get it replaced.. 🙁 so look on the bright side, YOU COULD OF BEEN ME!
    🙂

  11. I love pugs too. My bff has a big fat one (28 lbs) that has the key to my heart 😛 I have a fat cat at home.. she’s 12 and your post about ur cat almost made me cry!

  12. Your story about Corey makes me sad because I have an orange cat named Webster who I am absolutely in LOVE WITH!!! I have never really had a dog of my own, but I’m sure one day when I get one I will love it because I do love dogs but I was NEVER a cat person until I got Webster. He totally changed my mind about cats. I used to think they have no personality but Webster has a HUGE personality and makes me laugh every day!!

    Pets are the best 🙂

  13. We have 6 cats, our oldest, Gingerbread looks JUST like Corey! He’s going to be 10 years old in July and he was just diagnosed with feline leukemia and he has a spot on his liver. 😥 We’re trying to get the best treatment we can for him, we love him to pieces!!

  14. I am more of a cat person since I grew up with cats and no dogs. I have a real thing for pugs and bulldogs and other funny looking dogs though. I am just not much of a big dog fan, they kind of scare me!!!

  15. I’m definitely a cat person. I adore dogs…mainly other people’s dogs, but if we ever own a pet (can’t per landlord’s request) we’d get a cat. They’re just a little more low maintenance.

  16. I’ve always been more of a cat person, they seem more “relational.” ALways wanting to “nose” you and sit in your lap, etc. HOWEVER, since my cat died (she was 18!) and I haven’t been around cats, I have developed an allergy. So, I think if I had a pet again, I’d have to get a dog. I do prefer small dogs though!

  17. i have one of each!! I have a kitten and a puppy right now.. i’ve always loved cats though and Daisy (my rottweiler puppy) is my first dog.
I’m still a cat person deep down though!!

  18. I’m very much a cat person, I’m not a peace living without one. But I’ve warmed up to loving dogs too…. and actually I’m becoming quite enamored of Pugs… I don’t know if it was after hearing and seeing all this stuff about Murphy and how cute he is, but I’ve started noticing them more and more and get a wanting feeling…. haha.
I also want chickens, a pig and sheep, so maybe I just like all animals deep down. ; )

  19. corey was sooo cute!! i have an orange cat, they are so adorable!! I love both, but since I have 2 cats and no dogs i’ll have to say im a cat person

  20. Don’t fret about locking yourself out of the house! When we first got married and moved into our house I was constantly locking myself out when I would walk our yellow lab (I’m a dog AND a cat person BTW). We decided a hide-a-key was definitely necessary for my forgetfullness!

  21. I am SOOOO a dog person. I am a border collie owner (not for the faint of heart!) and despite my dog’s super-high energy and scary smarts, I can’t imagine ever getting another breed.

  22. You’re lucky to have friends that live nearby. We just moved to a new neighborhood and don’t know anyone and I’m too shy to ask a stranger to use their phone if I were to get locked out. I’d probably just break my window. I’ve done it before hahaha! I’ll have to do the key on the hairtie thing. Great idea!

  23. I love both cats and dogs. I currently have one cat, a Maine Coon mix. She’s fabulous. I’ve done a little foster caring for dogs, but they do require higher maintenance.

  24. Dog person for sure! I was attacked by a cat a couple of years ago and emotionally scarred me! It locked its jaw onto my arm and bit down to the nerve. Sent me to the hospital. My sisters cat Binka is a love though!

  25. Oh my gosh, that cat looks identical to mine. : ) My cat lives with my parents but I go vist every other week. Unfortunately, we aren’t allowed pets in our building but if I could I would have one of each. I LOVE orange cats, they have so much character!!

  26. I will always say that I am a dog person ( I have a pug too! 🙂 ) but I do also have a cat, and love her dearly too.

  27. I consider myself more of a cat person but that’s because I grew up with cats around. We had a dog when I was a kid (a fluffy white poodle) and when my mom and I moved out we got a PUG and he stole my heart. They are the best pets and the best friends. I love looking at your pics of Murphy b/c they remind me of Pudge. Now, my fiance and I have a cat who is our life. We love him to death….but I still want another pug.

  28. I consider myself more of a cat person, though I do love dogs as well. When it comes to cats I have a thing for orange cats as well 🙂 2 of our 3 cats are orange. I always say that our grey cat just got lucky because I had walked into the shelter looking for a orange cat, but some how walked out with a grey, talkative, super cute cat 🙂

  29. hi I’m new here, love that your local I’m from Worcester. I’ve locked myself out on many occasions…its especially not fun in the colder months!
dogs to run with and cats to mellow out with, I love both!

  30. I love cats and dogs, but moreso dogs. I grew up with both, but now just have my two little puppy girls. my childhod cat died a few months ago so I know how you feel 🙁

  31. I have never had a pet! I would absolutely LOVE a dog since I live alone and could use a friend 🙂 Not sure what kind. Cats are fine, I like them, but probably would not get one of my own.

  32. oh man- that’s terrible you locked yourself out! good thing it worked itself out! sounds like something I would do (or have done haha)
I am partial to dogs. I never really cared for them until my ex-boyfriend insisted we get one about 5 years ago. Now every time I see one, my heart melts. They have so much personality and are just amazing! Sadly, my puppies are with my ex-boyfriend and I miss them every single day. 🙁 I know they are being well taken care of so that makes it a bit more bearable. There is nothing like the unconditional love of a dog.

  33. Locking yourself out of your car…when it’s running…now THAT is frustrating.

    Corey is adorable – gorgeous.

I’m definitely a cat person. Less maintainence to care for and they’re not “up in your face” or as energetic as dogs can get…plus, I find dogs smellier – not anything against them…but you can always smell that dog smell in a person’s house when they let them all over the place.

  34. Oh my. Your kitty was so adorable. Those pics make my heart swell with longing for a cat! I have a huge thing for orange tabbies. Ever since I was little, my family has had an orange tabby in our lives. Our current orange tabby is just the sweetest and funniest cat I’ve ever encountered. His name is Horace (lol…the name suits him actually), and I think he might be a human trapped in cat form. There’s no other explanation for some of the behaviors.

I think I’m more of a cat person, but I love dogs too. I just like how low maintenance cats are. No baths or walks or poop patrol to deal with. Just the litterbox. That’s not too much to ask, and orange tabbeys are usually full of personality.

  35. I am definitley a dog person..I had a wonderful kitty, Montey, who was precious beyond words that I was blessed to have in my life for ten years – he spoiled me for any other cats, so he will be my one and only….but there is something wonderful about dogs that you can run with, walk with, snuggle with….so definitely a dog person, but I would never trade having montey in my life – he was a dream kitty…
