What a beautiful day for a long run along the Charles River!
I really loved my 10-mile run this morning. I’m pretty sure I had a goofy-ass smile plastered on my face for the entire time!
My morning started with my usual pre-long run breakfast: nut butter (today it was sunflower butter) and banana slices on a toast. This breakfast never lets me down.
I rocked my new Road ID on my run this morning. I’ve been meaning to get one for awhile now, so when the nice folks at Road ID offered to send me one for free, I took them up on their offer. I mean, I do a lot of long runs on my own, so I should really have one. I actually felt a lot safer wearing it on my run today.
Printed on my Road ID is my name, emergency phone numbers (Mal and my mom), and CARPE DIEM, which is my life motto.
Our running group didn’t meet this week,Ā but Mal and I still decided to drive to South Boston, so we could run around the Charles River. It was such a gorgeous morning; I’m so glad that we did!
Mal and I started together at D Street at West Broadway in Southie. We ran down Summer Street through Downtown Crossing to Boston Common. (Here’s the full route.)
Mal only planned to run 6 miles, so once we hit Boston Common, he took off at his insanely fast pace.
About 3.5 miles into my 10-mile run, Mal lapped me just before the Mass Ave bridge. I’m telling ya, he’s speed demon!
I cruised along for the rest of my run and enjoyed the scenery along the Charles. It was so pretty this morning! It was also really motivating to see so many other runners out there!
The rest of my run took me over the Mass Ave bridge, along the Charles towards the Museum of Science, around Boston Common once again, and then back to D Street.Ā
Around Mile 6, I found a water fountain and ate a package of watermelon Chomps. I didn’t bring water with me, so I ended stopping at every water fountain that I saw along the Charles. Thankfully, there were quite a few!
I ended up keeping my pace just below 9-minute miles, which I’m pretty psyched about. I’ve come a long way since this time last year!
- Mile 1: 9:05
- Mile 2: 8:36
- Mile 3: 8:49
- Mile 4: 8:48
- Mile 5: 8:35
- Mile 6: 8:54
- Mile 7: 8:58
- Mile 8: 8:59
- Mile 9: 8:47
- Mile 10: 8:41
Total: 1:28:19 (8:50)
At home, I refueled with an iced coffee mixed with vanilla protein powder and soy milk. Delish.
I’m spending the rest of the afternoon eating. Booyah.

That looks like such a scenic run! And that’s awesome that there were so many water fountains along the route. My city has practically NO water fountains so I always get so dehydrated after my runs! š
I’m laughing just a little because you said, “Look how far I’ve come!” and linked to a ten mile run where your pace was only nine seconds slower. š
But maybe you meant that was your first double digit run, and now you do that all the time?
A long run followed by eating…does it get any better š
Great job!!! What a beautiful day to run along the river. Jealous!
What a pretty run! When I got to run in Boston last spring I loved how scenic it was!
What an amazing run! What do you think about for 10 miles?
Gorgeous run plus lots of eating? Great Saturday if you ask me! I need to get some long runs in!
a goofy-ass smile hahaha love it. I used to have that exact same look during those perfect long runs. I miss Boston, I’m jealous you get to run through it all the time!
I love Boston š
Tina, how long do you wait between eating your breakfast and your starting your workout?
Also, do you mind me asking what bread you use? Looks awesome!
@Mandy: It depends on the day– anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours. I probably waited about an hour this morning.
You look very happy – it’s great to see!
What a gorgeous morning run! So glad to see how much better you are feeling!
Your paces have improved soo much!! YAY!!! That’s so exciting. I love seeing other runners out & about too! It’s encouraging. Even when it’s HOT and MUGGY like it was here today. š
I got my road id last week, and the plate has already smudged! I’m so disappointed. I was so excited to get one too! I think it happens from sweat, so be on the lookout for that!
I wish my runs were as scenic as yours! you had a rockin’ pace too. amazing job!!
I love Boston so much! Especially along the Charles river. What a great running loop!
what a great photo of the sailboats and city skyline!
I did not know where to leave this comment so I just decided to post it on your last post! I just wanted to tell you that I got your book in the mail yesterday and it took me less than 24 hours to read it. I could not put it down because I related to your life and your struggles so much. Thank you for being so honest and making me feel like I am not alone when it comes to eating and exercising. You have a gift and what you do is very powerful and inspirational to others. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart! I think you should write a sequel!
I’ve been meaning to get the Road ID here too, you reminded me about it with this post! On the To-Do list for today! =)
What a wonderful way to start the day! I love Boston oh so much š I am away this weekend for a wedding and honestly can’t wait to get back later today

Isn’t it amazing how a great run can set the tone for the entire day!?

I love that you run in my neighborhood! I think you might even live in the town that I work as a school psychologist! I love seeing Boston from other runner’s eyes!!
10 miles! wow! Good for you! All of the sudden I feel as though I have NO excuse to not run my 3 miles after work today. OY
I’m so glad you posted this Tina!! I just finally moved to Boston, right at D st and W Broadway. How I wish I had been out on Saturday Morning so I could have spotted you!! I will definitely have to try this route sometimes soon. Absolutely loved the photos of my new home š
I ran along the Charles Saturday morning too – my longest distance ever (14 miles)!!! It was a beautiful morning and the runners were out in full force!
I started and ended my run in Southie too!! I live right off of D St. and I usually use that as my starting point as well – nice long road š If you ever need someone to do a long run with let me know! I have done my last two solo!!
@Danielle: We do long runs every Saturday morning in Southie. Most weeks, we meet at the South Boston Running Emporium at 8:00 AM!
@Tina: Good to Know! Is there more info online or on your blog? Is it an open group to meet up with?
@Danielle: Yep! I can let you know when our next run is!
Awesome – thanks! It’s good to see you can get out running again!!
