• CrossFit Workout with Celebrity Trainer Yumi Lee

    Hi, guys! Happy Sunday!

    Just checking in with a quick post about the CrossFit-inspired workout that I did with celebrity trainer Yumi Lee yesterday morning. Reebok arranged this workout for our media group, and it was a lot of fun (and a lot harder than I expected – more on that in a second).

    Yumi has trained all sorts of professional athletes and Hollywood’s elite, including Jessica Alba, Brad Pitt, Nicole Richie, and Hugh Jackman, so it was neat to work out with her because she told us about some of the exercises she uses with her clients. I {heart} celebrities. Yumi is also the co-owner of Reebok CrossFit LAB.

    After a quick introduction, we got right to work. It was time to sweat!

    Yumi brought a couple of trainers from her CrossFit box to help with the workout, so they demonstrated the first part of the workout, which was called “Part A” and focused on strength.

    I love that the exercises Yumi selected were ones you can do just about anywhere and didn’t require any equipment (but still kicked our butts… literally): step-ups, push-ups, and squat jumps.

    We did 3 rounds of 10 reps of each exercise with good, deliberate form. On the step-ups, for example, Yumi instructed us to slow down and focus on the muscles we were using.

    That move mixed with jump squats… wow, I definitely felt the burn!


    Part B of the workout was the WOD, and, boy, it wasn’t your traditional media workout. Usually, they’re kind of easy and just give you a taste of what CrossFit is all about. This workout, however… whoa, it was legit. Yumi said she heard we were a fit bunch, so she upped her game. Seriously.

    The WOD was a Tabata of Thrusters, sit-ups, and kettlebell swings. The group split up into three groups and then did a Tabata (8 sets, 20 seconds of work, 10 seconds of rest = 4 minutes) of each exercise. So, for example, I started with sit-ups. I did as many sit-ups as possible in 20 seconds and then rested for 10 seconds, 8 times.


    We were told to count our reps on the first set, so on the second set of sit-ups (and following sets), my goal was to perform the same number of reps I did in the first set.


    Obviously, it was challenging to keep this up, so by the 7th and 8th sets, my abs were on fire! We did this same Tabata rep scheme for all 3 exercises.


    When it was time for the Thrusters, I almost died (heavy dumbbells), but a cue from Yumi helped me survive them. She told me to accelerate up with the dumbbells and then decelerate on the way down to give myself a little time to rest. It definitely made a difference.

    Speaking of Thrusters, when Yumi was explaining them, she told us Jessica Alba had a love-hate relationship with them because they’re such a tough exercise, but also an incredibly effective one.

    The WOD was only 12 minutes, but I definitely felt like I got a good workout. I was a sweaty mess by the end, and I’m a little sore today!

    I would love to workout/get my butt kicked by Jillian Michaels. That would be the ultimate….hey, I’d even take Bob or Dolvett :)…..maybe all 3 at the same time!

    Some famous trainers for RKC, and I met Pavel, the best of the best! RKC KB’s are very different from Crossfit bells.

    I do a lot of yoga videos at home, and must admit I have a total girl crush on Tara Stiles (I think my fiance understands….). I would LOVE to do a live class of hers if it were ever offered in Denver!

    I would want to work out with Tracy Anderson and Gwyneth Paltrow! I love Gwyneth and I think she looks awesome! I think that I would probably be bumbling around and not get all the dance cardio moves but I think it would be a great workout! I do the mat DVD and though it is pretty tough. That’s so neat you got to work out with a celebrity trainer and do a workout you really enjoy 🙂

    I have never worked out with a celebrity trainer. I did have a personal trainer through school for a few months and loved the hard workouts he put me through. I also love the workouts that my crossfit coach has for us. He isn’t a celebrity trainer but we all still get in great workouts. I think it would be fun to workout with the biggest loser grew!

    I would love to work out with Chris Powell from Extreme Weight Loss. He seems so positive to even the most difficult of clients. He’s also reeeeally easy on the eyes…I mean, I’d give up a few burpees or OHS for that awesome smile.

    This is awesome! I wanted to jump into those photos and feel the burn too:) I haven’t been to Crossfit (yet) but I did get back to my yoga practice this week! Mini cheer! I haven’t worked with a lot of trainers, but I have had my share of amazing choreographers: Andy Blankenbuehler (the choreographer for Broadway’s In the Heights), contemporary master Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio, and American Ballroom Theater great Pierre DuLaine. “good story” would be Tyce. He deserves his acclaim, but wow did he have an ego! Pierre inspired me the MOST for working with young dancers, his ease in a classroom is a joy to watch. I also enjoyed Andy and Mia, they took my breath away with their inspiring use of the music, putting each movement with a specific meaning.

    Returning from a training ride, I came across another cyclist on a tri-bike. We stooped to cross a highway when I invited him to ride with our cycling group the Flatlanders. He told me he was to fast for the group as he usually trained with Lance Armstrong. I told him he would fit right in with our group as we had several Ironman AG winners including an AG winner at Kona. It was Chris Lieto, Ironman winner of IM Japan, IM Wisconsin, and IM Canada!

    Wow, looks like such a great opportunity! I would love to work out with a celebrity trainer one day, and I am absolutely certain that it would be Chris Powell. He is so inspiring, and I’d love to just feed off his energy and see what I can do. I’d work out with him ALL day if possible (he’s not bad to look at either ;-))

    I’d say the heaviest weight you can safely and properly perform KB swings. Do you have a trainer/planning to work with one?

    I agree with you about the CrossFit “media workouts”. I though the one at FitBloggin was a little short and I wanted more! Glad this one was tough. If I could workout with any celebrity trainer it would definitely be Jillian Michaels. I have most of her DVDs!
