What’s In A Name?

August 7, 2009

Good morning! TGIF!!!

I had no clue what to write about this morning, but my bowl of oats helped me pick the topic: names! :-D

For those of you who don’t know already, my full name is ‘Christina,’ but I go by ‘Tina’ (or one of my nicknames). My parents really had no intention on using my full name, and called me ‘Tina’ from the very beginning. My family is Catholic, so I think they wanted to make sure I had a “proper” Christian name.

To read more about why my oat bowl says ‘Christine‘ instead of ‘Christina,’ here’s the story.

In general, I like my name. I haven’t met too many Tina’s, so it’s nice being one of the few in my life. However, the thing that bugs me about my name is that in movies and television shows, the Tina character is always the floozy, chatty, ditzy girl! What’s up with that?! And then there’s creepy Talky Tina and Tina the llama. Jeez. My name gets abused! Tina Fey and Tina Turner are pretty cool though! ;-)

In the mix today:

  • 1/2 cup (dry) oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 sliced banana
  • 2 enormous scoops of Barney Butter

31 Days of Summer

A summer tidbit from Meghan:

  • Enjoy the longer days and host an evening cocktail hour for friends or just you and your roomate/partner/neighbors. Trader Joe’s “Vinho Verde” plus chopped peaches and strawberries served over ice is an inexpensive and easy white sangria. Enjoy in your yard, on your porch or deck, or just inside with all of the windows open and some summery music, like Jimmy Buffet, playing.

Question of the Day

Do you like your name? Do you think it “suits” you? Would you ever change your name? If so, to what?

I love my name. It’s classic and strong. I love it so much I want to name my own daughter Sarah, but I guess I can’t really do that.

My full name is Stephanie, and although I like it, I don’t love it.
I think it sounds very soft, which I guess fits me somewhat, since I am kind of shy. I always wished I had a shorter name, especially now that my married last name is long!

My real name is Emeline, after my great great grandma. My mom wanted to name me after her grandma- but thank goodness she didn’t. Then I would have been Mildred. I don’t go by Emeline, but I love it. Rarely do I see anyone with that name, and even if they are named that it is usually spelled differently.

My parents named me after my mother’s favorite movie, Sabrina. In the 90′s whenever I said my name people would say “Oh! Like the Witch!” because of the TV show Sabrina the Teenage Witch. That got old really fast. Now I like my name, although it is more common. At work we have a Tena, Kristina and Sabrina and we always get mixed up when we only catch the -ina at the end. :)

I like my name. I like that no one else has it. When my parents were trying to choose my name they almost decided to call me Erin… I think I could have passed for an Erin. And my middle names Elizabeth, and I think that I could pass for an Elizabeth too.

It’s really interesting how much importance we place behind a name!

Great question!
I really like my name because its fairly unique. As a kid there were times I hated it because no one could pronounce or spell it correctly (which is still the case!) I still have to say Deer-dra and sound it out but I’ve gotten over being annoyed by people mispronouncing it. I wouldn’t change it because I think it suits me. I’m kinda ‘different’and so is my name. LOL

I love my name! Growing up, I knew lots of “Aaron”‘s but no other “Erin”‘s. That changed when I got to Union and there were plenty of us! Now I actually know of a couple girls with my name first AND last name – we’re all runners and have been in some of the same races over the years – though I’ve never met either of them. One is in NYC and the other is in Boston, and we’re all about the same age. I guess it’s not surprising since I have a pretty common irish last name.

My first naime is Jaime. It’s the boy spelling of the name. I had a lot of issues with it when I was younger. So, in the second grade I decided to go by my middle name, Melissa and it just stuck! My family calls me Jaime and my friends call me Melissa. Weird and confusing but it seems to work. :)

I like my name a lot. It’s not super common which I like but it’s common enough to make me happy when I read my name in a book or have a character named Amy in a movie. :) I think it suits me really well. It’s feminine, cute, and means “beloved” so I’m happy to have it as my name.

I was Kathy until I became a professional and thought that Kathy was too informal. Now I have work contacts who call me Katherine and family and friends from the past who call me Kathy. It is odd because I spent a lot of my life as Kathy, but spend a lot of time at work now being addressed on the phone, etc., as Katherine . Katherine sounds more right now. I feel like I have two identities! i do like Katherine, seems to fit me.

The name is Tina, just Tina although lots of people try to call me Christina. My middle name is Diane, My Aunts name is Nita Diane so I guess they just flipped the N and the T although they say it was a mishap and not intentional. Yea, whats up with the floozies with our names? just rude.

BTW, What is Barney Butter?

I never thought my name suited me but I absolutely like it. I just don’t think I look like a “Natalie”… lol Natasha maybe (but that’s my cousin’s name who was born a year before me so the parents probably didn’t want to go there AGAIN)…. I think it was a unique choice on their part… I’ve grown to love it!

Christina August 10, 2009 at 1:45 pm

I laughed when I saw this post because I have the exact same bowl and it also says Christine instead of Christina. A family friend brought it back from Paris when I was 6 or 7, how random is that!

I looked at this blog, trying to think of a clever name for my cake business.Teena’s cakes, Cakes by Teena
I also go by Teena, my spelling is crazy because of a second grade teacher. 2 Tina’s in the class,so she thought this would be a clever way to tell us apart. And it was my sister that started calling me Tina in the first place..Can’t change it now,I’ve had it for 50 + years!
