I’m a big fan of Second Breakfast and partake frequently, but I never participated in Second Dinner until last night. I think I like it.

Around 5:00 PM, I ate an early dinner: half of a toasted sandwich with sautéed mushrooms and melted gruyere cheese inside. It was inspired by the Gruyere & Mushroom Pressed Sandwich from Sandwhich in Chapel Hill. Mmm! Gruyere is so amazing.

On the side: roasted broccoli and arugula with balsamic vinegar drizzled on top.

A little while later, Mal suggested grabbing a beer and watching the Bruins playoff game at the Abington Ale House. I’m always up for a beer, so I agreed.

While watching the game, I munched on a bunch of pretzels with pimento cheese dip.

To drink, I ordered a Long Trail IPA.

Mal ordered the same beer, but a much larger version of it. Of course, like the nerds we are, we checked to see if the bigger beer was the better deal. It was $0.03 cheaper per ounce. Yep, we’re dorks.

Then, all of a sudden, I got really hungry again. So, I ordered a side of sweet potato fries. They hit the spot.

Once we left the Abington Ale House, Mal and I went in search of a couple of magazines that I’m featured in next month: Woman’s Day and People StyleWatch. May is a big month for CNC!

We didn’t find the May issue of People StyleWatch, but we found the Woman’s Day issue!

As you may know, I’m working with Woman’s Day and Eggland’s Best on their “Live Well” Challenge, which includes this great two-page spread. Cool, right? I also appeared in the January issue with different healthy living tips.

The “Live Well” Challenge also includes a Facebook page where you can submit your favorite healthy lifestyle tips. The best ones will be featured in an upcoming issue of Woman’s Day! I know you want to enter!

Breakfast

This morning, I brought back an oldie, but goodie recipe: Oatmeal Pancake! I used to eat Oatmeal Pancakes all of the time… I don’t know what happened! I actually ran out of oats, so I used oat bran instead. It worked just fine!

I topped my Oat Bran Pancake with peanut butter and banana slices.

Feel Great Weight

I frequently receive questions about the number of calories I consumed when I was trying to lose weight, and readers are usually surprised when they hear my answer. Check out this week’s post to find out: How Many Calories Do You Need Each Day?

Question of the Day

Are you generally a three-square-meals-a-day person or do you eat smaller meals and snacks throughout the day? Have you always eaten this way?

P.S. Bostonians: Pinkberry is opening at the Prudential today!!! To celebrate, they’re offering free froyo from 4:00 – 7:00 PM!

  1. WOW, congrats on the features Tina! I’m more of a grazer and I eat all throughout the day, but I haven’t always been this way. I thought at one point that eating only 3 times and limiting snacks was a better way to maintain my weight, but now I’m the complete opposite! Eating more snacks and smaller meals definitely helps me to be satisfied, as opposed to eating a ton at once and then feeling really tired.

  2. I’m definitely a grazer – I like small meals, little and often (usualy 6 a day depending on what my schedule is like). These keep me satisfied for longer and don’t leave me feeling stuffed and lethargic afterwards. I also snack during the day on raw fruit and veg.

  3. Congrats on the magazine placements!!! What are you in People StyleWatch for??

I’m typically three meals a day and one snack between lunch and dinner. And…there is usually some sort of dessert thrown in around 10 PM. I can’t watch my Netflix Instant View without a little treat!

  4. Wow sounds like an exciting month for sure! I’m a 3 meals&2 snacks girl, one of which is a ‘dessert’ before bed. Gotta start & end my day on a sweet note!

  5. I eat 5-6 small meals a day! When I was younger I used to eat 3 meals a day because it was what my parents did and what I was raised to do. However, I have always had problems with digestion and bloating so i started trying smaller meals and it works like a charm, everyone makes fun of me for eating so many smaller meals but i like it!!!

  6. Hmm at what point did you realize that the bruins playoff game is tonight and you were watching a replay bc of the sox rain out? Haha

    1. @audrey: Thank You for pointing this out Audrey! Although I am cheering for Montreal, we have our snacks all planned for tonight’s game 🙂

    2. @audrey: I guess right now! LOL! Mal was watching the game like it was the first time he saw it! I actually don’t like hockey, so I wasn’t really paying attention! 😉

      1. @Tina: I was gonna say the same thing!!! Well, I was gonna say ” Can I borrow your time machine”

As an huge Habs fan, I cannot wait for the beggining of the playoffs tonight!

Eheh! Way to show how HUGE of a hockey fan you are 😉

  7. Congrats on all the attention this month! I do what I would call a second dinner, but it’s always oats. I eat it when we sit to chill out for the night. I eat about 6 times a day. I have to keep fueled. I’ve tried doing larger meals and eating less often, but that just does not work for me.

  8. Well this is awkward, I eat 3 meals AND snacks throughout the day! If I don’t eat something every two hours, I get cranky… like an infant. But my snacks are just that… snacks. An apple with peanut butter, some yogurt, nuts, etc. I like the second dinner idea, though!

  9. Did you see that b.good and Ben and Jerrys and having an icream truck battle up in Harvard sq this afternoon with free b.good shakes and free Ben and Jerrys scoops? Donations are to benefit Back On My Feet.

  10. I love second meals! I’m an especially big fan of second dinners. I don’t get very many breaks during the day so it’s hard to eat too much. But I generally hit the gym around 5 so I’m absolutely famished in the evenings. I try to to keep my second dinner super light because I know it’s not good to eat too late. But I’m usually up until at least midnight, so I need a little something to keep me going! Congratulations on being featured in magazines! That’s so exciting!

  11. Congrats on the mag features!

I probably eat about 5 times during the week, with small meals and large snacks. On the weekend I probably do 3 squares a day, not too much snacking. But i need to eat alot better on the weekends! Too much beer & pizza 😉

  12. I typically eat three meals a day with an afternoon snack (like yogurt). I used to eat a morning snack too so I was eating 5 times a day but my breakfasts have been filling me up so I decided to skip the morning snack.

  13. I definitely eat those three major meals a day, but lighter versions of them because I love to snack on something every few hours usually

  14. I’ve always been a multiple small meals person. I’m always snacking and have the ‘munchies’! I need to clean up my ways though, because I’ll have a small breakfast and lunch but a big dinner, and lots of snacking in between. I eat healthy 75% of the time, but I just ending up eating too much!

  15. That sandwich looks amazing (even at 8:30am!)! Mushrooms + cheese is definitely a win-win in my book.
Congratulations on the magazine publications! Looks great. 🙂

  16. How cool to be in those magazines! I’ll have to look at them when I’m at the store this weekend.

I eat 4-5 meals per day — on some days I don’t need a morning snack (usually if I’m busy I’ll skip it) but some days I “need” to eat more often.

  17. I mostly eat three small meals and 2 snacks in between. I run a lot and if I had only 3 square meals I feel that my energy would totally not be able to support me through my runs. I also like to eat, so looking forward to small meals and snacks is better than just eating 3 times a day! I could never just eat three times a day!

  18. it’s amazing to see how far your blog has gone!! Your passion and time is finally paying off! Book deal, in PEOPLE magazine? Next thing is for you to meet Ryan reynolds. 🙂 So proud of you Tina!!

  19. My meal number varies, but I usually have three “main” meals with at least two snacks thrown in there at some point… especially before the gym! I would love to be able to eat many small meals, but my schedule doesn’t allow it right now. However, this summer while I’m on vacation (an awesome perk of working at a school!) I’ll be able to do what I want regarding my meals… wahoo!!

By the way, those pretzels looks ridiculously delicious!! I’m on a short break right now and I forgot to pack a snack 🙁 Bummer.

  20. Ah so cool! You’re totally a famous “expert” for advertorials now! 🙂 Haha.

I’m definitely a “more frequent” meal person. I tend to find that no matter what I’m hungry after about 4 hours so I try to keep my meal sizes more reasonable knowing that I’ll be eating again in the next several hours!

  21. Congrats on the May magazine spreads! I am definitely a 3 meals – with a few snacks threw in between depending on the day – type of gal.

  22. I think that your calorie range is great, because that’s exactly what range I was told to eat in, between 1700-1900 calories per day to lose weight consistently. Plus, by eating that much I don’t feel deprived and don’t have the urge to eat everything in sight!
I am not a 3 square meal per day person, I always eat throughout the day. When I was younger I was more of a 3-square meal per day person, but as I got older I’ve become an all-day eater.

  23. I usually eat 4 square meals a day. I don’t like to just graze because then I feel like I am always hungry but I need more than 3 meals…so 4 is it! 🙂

  24. I prefer a bunch of small meals. I’m on medication right now that requires I eat three meals a day. I never realized how hard that was until I had to. I’ve been left eating many 12 am dinners just to get the last dose in.

  25. I’m more of a “three-meals-one-snack-and-a-dessert” sort of person. Though occasionally I’ll do the mini-meals things. I tend to lose track of what I’ve eaten if I snack too much. Plus, I like the extra caloric “room” when I’m planning meals. 🙂

  26. I’m a 3 smaller meals with a few snacks throughout the day – I’m actually a gastric bypass patient so I really HAVE to eat that way and I enjoy eating smaller meals and never feeling too full at one time. I feel like I get the chance to enjoy “more” throughout the day when I eat a little at a time instead of a lot of one thing. 🙂

  27. MAY IS HUGE FOR YOU!!! I am so so excited for everything going on with you….you have worked so hard and you deserve it!! I LOVE having second dinner especially if it involves sweet potato fries!! Thank you so much for your hugging Murphy picture on Bess’s blog….you made my day!
