I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.


An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Last week, I simultaneously blogged about the the plethora of races on my calendar and complained about the high costs of race registration fees. Not even a week later, I added three (yes, THREE!) new races to my agenda:

Clearly, I have issues.


On the positive side, however, my race schedule for the year is complete. I am cutting myself off from registering for any more races. You guys are my witnesses. I will not registered for any more races in 2011. Of course, if a free race entry comes my way, I’m all for it! 😉


As you probably know, I’m working with the Boston Running Center to get myself into ideal running shape for the NYC Marathon in November. In the past, I’ve struggled with some injuries due to a hip imbalance, so I’m working with a coach to deal with them. My workouts for the next few weeks involve a lot of stretching, foam rolling, and strengthening workouts.

Today’s workout started with a 10-minute warm up on the elliptical, followed by a Body Pump class where I used lighter weight on the lunge and squat tracks (as suggested by my coach).

After class, I did some tube walking and single leg squats. My right leg is quite a bit weaker since my left leg does the majority of the work when I am running, which has led to a number of my injuries. Hopefully, these extra strengthening exercises will help to even out the imbalance.


After the gym, I came home and made lunch: a chopped Romaine salad with tomatoes, carrots, balsamic vinegar, flaxseed oil, and some falafel on top. I finished off lunch with a dark chocolate Adora disk.

Do you have any races on your calendar for this year? If so, which one(s) are you looking forward to the most?

  1. Also running the Boilermaker, its my next race and I’m super excited. Ran it last year and its great! I have like 5 half marathons I want to do in the fall but I’m having trouble deciding on which one to register for..haha. So many races I want to run!

  2. Isn’t it odd that one leg can be stronger than the other when you use both legs to run?! I’m in the same boat and using weight lifting to hopefully avoid getting injured as I train for RnR Savannah. My 1st full — eeek!

  3. I’m running a local 5K in my town that actually goes past my house on Saturday. Then in two weeks a 5K Adventure Race called the Go Commando with a great bunch of ladies. We are really excited to get filthy dirty in our matching camo and hot pink shirts. Then a 5 miler in July hopefully, the Veggie Trail run 5k and the MN State Fair Milk Run 5k at the end of August. For the fall, I’m undecided…but I would like to attempt a 10K or half up in Aslhand, WI called the Whistlestop through some amazing fall foilage. I’m nervous about increased mileage, but it does give me a goal to push for, right?

    As for races, I’ve got lots on my calendar but I’m most excited about my first marathon! Hamptons Marathon on September 24. Game on!

  5. I have one race on my calendar thus far, due to my foot injury which I have yet to proactively go to a doctor and find a diagnosis for :-(. I’m hoping it’s something easy to fix so I can start running more. ANYWAY, my one race is the mini 10K! Are you considering doing a blogger meetup?

  6. I definitely *need* to get a few more races on my schedule for the year! After falling SEVEN SECONDS short of achieving a PR at my half marathon last month, I’m dead set on getting it sometime this year – just need to pick the right race sometime in early fall!

    I’m also going to be running a couple of trail races this summer – something I’ve never done but am completely looking forward to! I love trail running!

  7. I just added Twin Cities Marathon to my race agenda–this is my first marathon and I just started training this week! I hope I can figure out a good training balance!

  8. I have to say, after seeing about you going to Boston Running Center and the good you think it will do you, I finally got in today for an appt for PT for my knee. I have periodic pain in my right knee – and it’s no surprise that with that I tend to baby it, so I put more pressure on my left. So, count me in as another uneven person!
    Among other things:
    * Even just standing, I keep my right knee bent, and my left straight.
    * My right thigh muscle is 1.5 cm smaller than my left!

    I decided that my goal for 2011 is 11 races. I’ve just got to sign up for 1 more (and run them, duh!), and I’ll have hit it!

  9. I’m still working on my race schedule! I have a hard time committing to a race way down the line because I never know what will come up (especially with grad school). But I have been researching a bunch of races that I would like to run.

  10. Tina, I just finished my third ever (all in one year) 5k on Saturday. Improving my time another 2 minutes and 9 seconds. Whoop whoop!

    This morning I registered for a 10k that I can run/walk next month while on VACATION out in Colorado; it is a train run and my first 10k.

    I also registered for a 5k trail run for Maui in October when we will be there on VACATION.

    I’m pumped but I also have had butterflies in my tummy ever since I committed about two hours ago.


  11. $5 says you sign up for another race 🙂 Once you start – you can’t stop (am I quoting Pringles?)!

    I don’t have any races schedule until September and I’m getting the itch! I’m definitely doing a 15K in September, my first full in November, RnR Las Vegas in December, and Miami in January – but after that it’s up in the air.

  12. I’m doing my very first 10K in a week and a half (which I’m pretty psyched for!), and then I have a bunch of 5Ks planned for the rest of the summer.

    I just did the JPMorgan Corporate Chase challenge in Boston last week, sooo many people!

    I have 2 in my future – the BAA 10k at the end of June and the Rock n Roll Providence Half in August. Depending on how I feel after that one, I may try for the Newport Half in October!

  14. My trainer tells me that most people naturally have a stronger side. When I do a half marathon for example, one hamstring is much more sore than the other because it worked harder. So, I think one of my legs does the majority of the work too.

    I have SO many races coming up. And I’m looking forward to ALL of them! 15k in Sept, Savannah Rock n Roll, Las Vegas Rock n Roll, ING Miami Half, St. Pete Rock n Roll. That’s not even all of them. I think I need to not sign up for more races too.

  15. I’m jazzed to be training for my first ever 1/2 marathon in the fall. I can’t wait but at the same time I can because I know if I had to do it today I could not finish. Your schedule looks like fun!

  16. I was just looking at my running calender this morning. I have 5 weeks to go in this pregnancy, and once I factor in recovery time I have 2 10k’s and a half on the books, so far!

  17. I’m running the Mini 10K too! I’m also signed up for a 5M in a few weeks and my first-ever half-marathon at the end of August. I think I’m looking forward to the Mini, and of course the half-marathon the most (although I’m not really looking forward to half-marathon training in July and August…).

  18. I’m most looking forward to the NYC marathon, but I’m also running the Smuttynose Half in October. I’m looking to PR in that one so it should be fun!

    PS. I went to South Boston Running Emporium this weekend on your’s and Yelp’s reccomendation. It was awesome and the owner was the nicest and most knowledgable. I’ll totally make the trek from Somerville there again.

  19. I have a half marathon this Saturday (my first! Yikes!)!!

    Just last night I sat down on the couch with about seven race registration forms and tried to decide which ones I was going to sign up for. I couldn’t turn any down so as of right now I think I may do them all! I just couldn’t help it! 😀

  20. I just wanted to say thank you…..I got my sticker today. It’s TOO CUTE!!!!! We have a one year old pug named Angus & I read your blog everyday to see what Murphy is up to. He’s so stinkin’ cute and aren’t they hysterical ? Pugs are in a class by themselves. Take care! Love your blog!

  21. Las Vegas Rock N Roll Half in December, but that’s it for now. Very excited for that one because it’s at night, I think that will be cool!

    I’m sure I’ll throw a 5K and 10K in the mix while I’m training for the half too.

  23. I’m not signed up for any right now, but I am hoping to soon. I really want to do the Rock N Roll marathon in New Orleans if my budget allows!

  24. I am also trying to ban myself from registering for more races this year! Its to hard though!

    I haev 2 local/smaller 10km races in July. September 4th I am travelling to Californnia to do the Disneyland Half Marathon – this is the one I am more excited for! Then the end of September I am running another Half in Banff, Alberta – it is through the mountains!

    I am contemplating registering for the Las Vegas Rock n’ Roll Marathon now too… I have always wanted to run a Rock n’ Roll race so we will see 🙂

  25. Today, I’m signing up for a 10K in Huntington beach in September. I’ll be running the rock n roll Los Angeles half in October, and am looking for some 5 and 10k’s in orange county for this summer. I’m REALLY looking forward to the rock n roll half!

  26. Haha after hearing about all the races you registered for (And how many a friend of mine has been doing), I decided I would register for 1 for every month left in the year. Then I remembered how much they cost, calculated the total cost in my head, and scratched that idea! LoL.

    I am doing the Rock and Roll Half marathon in Philly in September. I’m very excited about that one. Debating on a marathon but I want it to be a good one. Philly’s is in November. We’ll see! I also will do one of the races at the Atlantic City marathon weekend (5K, 10K, or half) since I did it the last 2 years too!

  27. I haven’t run a road race in years but I think this summer will mark my triumphant (and by ‘triumphant,’ I mean tentative) return to racing. Looking for some fun ones in the Boston area, 10ks and 5 milers and such. Good luck with your races and good luck restraining yourself from not signing up for any more 😉

  28. I just finished my first race ever this saturday. It was the Spartan Obstable race in Tuxedo, NY and by far one of the best and most physically exhausting experiences in my life!

    I’m moving to Boston in August for graduate school and have been looking for a half marathon to get me motivated to keep up my training this summer. Any recommendations?

  29. I have two half marathons (Disneyland and the RNR Las Vegas) and my first full marathon – Nike’s Women’s in San Fran!! So excited for them all but I think most looking forward to Las Vegas baby!!!!

  30. I’m planning to run the Rock n’ Roll half in Philly in mid-Sept, but the race I am most excited for is the Dogfish Dash 10K (held at the brewery!) at the end of Sept!

  31. I just ran a half over the weekend and now I’m looking for a new one to train for! I decided I’m only going to pay to run a half and no more 5 or 10Ks. I just enjoy a half so much more than any other distance.

  32. you run way (way, way, way) faster than me, but i’ll be keeping an eye out for you beforehand on sat 🙂 lucky us, the course runs the opposite way of the more/fitness half, which means two smaller harlem hills instead of one enormous one!

  33. At the moment, I have 2 races planned for this year: a 5K in Connecticut next month, and a half marathon in Syracuse this fall (which I’m running with my mom — can’t wait!) I’ll probably throw in a couple more 5Ks and 10Ks along the way. I seem to be happiest when I’m training for shorter distances, and have time (or, really, the energy) to focus more on yoga and weight lifting, too.

    That being said, I do have a pretty hardcore long race planned for next spring. 🙂

  34. I’m so jealous you get to run races! I’m out of commission with a back injury so I’m probably not the best person to rely on in terms of telling you NOT to sign up for things. I feel like “Sign up! Sign up for everything!!” haha – but that’s just my jealousy talking 😉
