Hi, guys! Happy Hump Day! Is anyone else ready to be over the hump?!
I was bored-hungry mid-morning, so instead of digging into my lunch early, I sipped on some delicious tea that I found in our office kitchen. The tea was a very special find!
I was psyched to discover that this particular tea actually existed! You see, a couple of years ago, I had a manicure at an Aveda salon/spa where they served me a lovely peppermint tea that I enjoyed quite a lot, but never thought to ask about it. Drinking the tea that I found in the kitchen this morning totally reminded me of that day at the spa, and I am convinced that it is the same tea. The Aveda Comforting Tea is an “herbal infusion of licorice root and peppermint.” It’s gotta be the same one! I’m so happy that I found it!

Lunch
Today’s lunch was half of a leftover vegetarian burrito from one of my favorite “fast food” restaurants: Chipotle. (I ate the other half for dinner last night. It was a HUGE burrito!)
The “innards” of the burrito included black beans, corn, salsa, green peppers, onions, and guacamole.
For dessert, I have a homemade peanut buttery blondie!
And for my afternoon snack: French vanilla yogurt and fresh strawberries. I love this yogurt-berry snack! It’s dessert-like, but, at the same time, light and summery.
“Healthy” Fast Food
I received so many comments about “busting” Mal with his Wendy’s fast food dinner the other night. (I still think the whole situation was hilarious!
) Quite a few of you mentioned that you also enjoy fast food from time-to-time. While I don’t indulge in “hard core” fast food (e.g. a burger from McDonald’s), I will occasionally eat a burrito from Chipotle or a small “Frosty” from Wendy’s. In my opinion, eating fast food in moderation is totally fine and can be part of an overall healthy diet. Here are a few of my tips for enjoying fast food in a “healthy” way:
- Drink water with your meal. If you’re going to indulge in fast food, skip the soda all together. There is nothing nutritious about soda!
- Watch portion size. I always order a small size to help reduce unneeded calories and fat. If the “small” is not that small, I will share it with Mal or take the other half home for later.
- Make careful selections. I pay attention to menu descriptions and sometimes ask employees for clarification about a particular menu item, if needed. Seemingly healthy items can be deep-fried, batter-dipped or breaded, which adds extra calories, sodium, and unhealthy fats to the meal. Similarly, if nutritional information is available on-site or on-line, I will check it out before I make my meal decision.
- Nix the extras. For example, if you order a burger, nix the cheese and/or “special” sauce, and eat your burger plain or with healthy toppings like lettuce, tomato, salsa, pickles, etc. Same goes for salads: I order mine without cheese and the dressing on the side.
- Eat mindfully. Savor each bite, chew your food thoroughly, stop eating when you are full, and try to avoid eating on the run.
- Enjoy the splurge! And don’t feel guilty about it! Of course, moderation is key, but if I over-do-it, I just get back on track the very next day with extra healthy meals and some exercise.
Bonus Question of the Day
*For me, fast food includes Chipotle, Subway, Panera, Dunkin’ Donuts, D’Angelo’s, etc.

Good looking photos. Chipotle is a fun treat.
I don’t eat fast food often, but I don’t ban it from my diet. I don’t think any food should really be banned as long as the bad stuff is a rare treat. I like Culver’s a lot – they have good hamburgers and great frozen custard – in fact, I’ll probably eat there this weekend. I liked your tips on moderation.
Chipotle is sooooo good! We had one near us in MD and there are none in SC! Josh mentions how much he misses it from time to time!
The only “fast food” that I will eat is Panera or Subway (Subway only when I have to). Other than that, I’d rather eat my own things! I’m picky though!!
I haven’t eaten “hard” fastfood like McDonalds, Burger King, or Wendy’s in like 10 years. I have no problem with places like Subway or Panera though.
I healthified a typically junky food tonight for dinner – nachos! I used Dreena Burton’s vegan “cheese” sauce, and it was wonderful.
Mmmm PitaPit! I don’t consider that fast food at all…. I eat once every week or two. It’s all fresh and made to order. I live in California, not Oregon, but I did visit a Burgerville when I was in Portland and it was quite delicious. I do appreciate their standards as well.
Rubios anyone? I think maybe it’s only in California but it’s kinda like Baja Fresh but waaaaay better. If you make good choices (grilled fish, etc.) it can be pretty healthy. Lastly, I must admit to an occasional In N Out stop, usually when traveling. Grilled cheese and fries, please!
I don’t eat fast food very often, mostly because I’m cheap and know that I’ve spent all this money on food at home, so why not just eat that? But if I do have fast food, I’m just going to order what I want. Obviously, I’m craving it, so why try and healthify it? If you only eat it on rare occasions, one bacon cheeseburger ain’t gonna kill you.
Oh love the tea I had it before! YOu are so gonna think I am a pig! I loveeeeeee fast food I am like the fast food queen I don’t over do it I just get a combo meal and I am good to go I not gonna lie I eat it at least 2x a week so shame! Never the desserts! I think I am the only one among my friends who still eat fast food I can’t help it I love my junk food they are always amazed I am not obese
I would say that I eat fast food maybe 6 times a year, perhaps once a month. When I do go, I choose the same places you do–Panera, Moe’s, Chipotle, Subway, etc.
How funny, I was JUST looking at my aveda tea a few minutes ago because I had forgotten that I had it but I know that I loved it!! I tried it when I got a massage at the aveda salon a year ago and bought the tea right afterwards!
I had that tea this weekend when I slipped into Aveda to avoid a guy following me in the mall.
Anyway, it tasted just like Throat Coat from Traditional Medicinals, which I LOVE. The licorice root calms a sore throat.
I have you on my feed and read you as often as I can, love your blog! I’ve been dealing with tangled earrings for years and your photo frame/hair tie deal was just what I’ve been searching for. THANKS!!!
Maybe 3-2 a month, I am not a fan of fast food at all, only when I am hungover do I crave Wendy’s.
Haha, that’s pretty funny! I eat at fast food restaurants (the “healthy” ones like Chipotle, Fresh City, or Panera) but plan ahead what I’m going to have by checking out their website. Although, the last time I went to Chipotle, my “healthy” meal had to be scrapped because I happened to check out how much sodium was in my selection. 1900 mgs for ONE burrito (the salsas added a lot of it, so I had to scrap them).
Your story of busting your husband with Wendy’s reminds me of a funny story… we have a friend who is vegetarian and very much a seeds and sprouts kind of person. During her pregnancy she got an insane craving for a filet o’ fish sandwich from McDonald’s. This is totally unlike her — grease upsets her stomach so she seldom eats fried food. But finally, she had to cave.
Guess who she saw leaving the restaurant just as she was pulling in? That’s right. Her husband was a regular secret McDonald’s visitor and he was absolutely SHOCKED that his wife caught him. It was a great story (and they went on to enjoy quite a few treats at McD’s during her pregnancy).
I’d guess that I eat fast food about once a month or so. I’m too cheap to eat it more often. To be honest, though I used to love it, lately I just haven’t thought it was very good. The last time I had a McD’s french fry, I didn’t really like it. I suppose maybe my tastes have changed.
I don’t see any problem with having “hardcore” fast food occasionally if you really like it. Life is too short to deny yourself something if it is infrequent and in moderation.
Late to the party on this, but I love this post. I’m a total fast food junkie and am trying to reform my ways. (I have around 50 pounds to lose, ugh.) I love running over to Einstein’s and grabbing some soup and a whole grain bagel for lunch, and am also addicted to Moe’s and Chipotle. My big weakness is Chick-Fil-A. I’m getting better about ordering the grilled chicken on whole wheat bun (no sauce or mayo), but they also sell cheesecake and those delicious waffle fries.
Fast food has never been a problem for me. I guess it’s just that I’ve always been obsessed with the fact that fried food = grossly unhealthy for you(well at least most, if not all). I guess after struggling with an eating disorder, it’s been like hard for me to eat indulgent foods without feeling really guilty. I’ve gotten better, but once again, fast food is not my indulgence. ;D
