Making It Work

March 13, 2009

I’ve decided to go back to my morning workouts. Since starting my new job with an earlier start time, I’ve been forcing afternoon/evening workouts (instead of waking up earlier), and it just isn’t working for me. I’m exhausted at the end of the day or the gym is so freakin’ crowded or something comes up to prevent me from exercising. Plus, looking back on past works (another reason to record workouts!), my best workouts are in the morning when I have energy and motivation. I’m naturally a morning person, so I find it easier and enjoy exercising first thing in the day. It just works for me and there is no reason to force a workout late in the day, especially if it’s not enjoyable. Guys, I’m making morning workouts work again!

So, I had a nice morning workout today: 30 minutes of free weight + 4.5 mile run. I’m saving my yoga for tonight, but feel free to comment on Yoga Day #13!

Yoga Challengers: We’re almost half way there! I have some surprises for you on Monday! ;-)

Breakfast

I’m getting good at this stovetop thing! Stovetop oats seriously blow my mind! HOW are they so delicious?!?

In the mix today:

  • 1/3 cup dry oats
  • 1/4 cup wheat berries
  • 1/4 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 1 tsp hemp protein
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed meal
  • 1 tbsp chopped walnuts
  • 3/4 cup water

And, of course, two scoops of peanut butter! Peanut butter + oats are so amazing together! They need to be married like salt + pepper, peanut buttter + jelly, rice + beans, bread + butter, ketchup + mustard…

Lunch Preview

Today’s lunch is a homemade salad topped with baked cinnamon sweet potatoes. The other part of lunch is going to be a yummy cookie from High Rise Bakery, which, at 7:30 AM, I am already looking forward to! My afternoon snack will likely be an apple from my office snack stash. I’m keeping things light today because I am celebrating a friend’s 30th birthday by going out for happy hour, where I am sure that I will have a few beers and some bar food.

Question of the Day

If you could only eat fruits OR veggies for the rest of your life, which would you chose?

If I had to choose I would go with fruit because I feel like I can live off of it!

I would absolutely choose fruit. Reason #1: I have an insatiable sweet tooth. Reason #2: lots of my favorite culinary “vegetables” are botanically fruits (avocados, tomatoes, squash, corn, eggplant etc).

I totally agree on the PB&Oats…they were made for each other!!!

I’m the total opposite of you, I love doing exercise in the afternoon. I guess that’s just when my energy is highest.

Veggies for sure! I can’t get enough kale or sweet potatoes!

Veggies ALL the way!! I miss Barney :( I ran out and haven’t been able to order it yet!

Vegetables, I have a salt tooth, not a sweet tooth.
I cannot for the life of me work out in the morning. I just don’t have the energy. I am best in the afternoon. Even yesterday I was practically falling asleep on the bus on the way home from work at 5:30, but somehow managed to go home and go on a short run. I can’t do that at 7am, only 7pm.

Apples and brocolli. My two favorite!

Fruit by far! I mean I understand you’re supposed to eat veggies and all, but I seriously feel like a rabbit half of the time. If only in a perfect world I could live off of cheese, meat, fruit, and CARBS! (can you tell that I’m trying to lose weight? *whimper*)

@Leah: Carbs are GOOD for you! :)

I just switched back to mornings too! I made so many excuses when I would come home in the afternoon…

If I had to pick one, it would definitely be fruits! I would miss my strawberries & pineapples too much!

definitely fruit… love the veggies but would miss fruit more!
and congrats on the return to morning workouts! i’m definitely a morning work-out kinda girl. i’m up at 4:30 to get to the gym before work and it’s been about a year and a half of this schedule… it’s gotten SO MUCH EASIER!! my time felt too structured before and i felt like i had no extra time to do things… now my day just starts earlier and every night is free to do whatever i want! good luck!

Definitely fruit! It’s just so yummy and makes me feel so good!

Fruit for sure, because there are too many vegetables that I don’t like, or don’t like in certain preparations, but I have many more fruit options.

yoga for today was 40 minutes at lifetime. It was a gentle flow class but we did a ton of chair and chatarungas. I had to leave the hour class because by 40 minutes I couldn’t take it anymore. Plus the room was really cold.

I can’t choose because I love both but if I had to have one I guess fruit would win.

Yay! :-D

And definitely fruits for me. Especially since tomatoes and avocado fall in that category too!

i’m totally a morning person, too :) and fruit, i’m a junkie!
while I have been using some of the yoga poses for stretching, I haven’t been doing routines and updating your challenge as my left wrist was aggrevated and it’s been hard for me to do the routines I came to enjoy :-/ I’ll give it some time to heal and get back at it!!

I think that’s great that you’re going back to morning workouts! THey’re so amazing and there’s no excuses not to do them. If I skip an AM workout it’s really hard to go at night!
I LOVE both fruits and veggies – this is a hard question! Prob fruit because of my mayjuh sweet tooth!

Are we counting fruit veggies like tomatoes as fruits? If so, I 100% say fruits. :D

Seriously, stovetop oats changed my breakfast life forever!

I would have to go with veggies, although it would be tough to live without mango…

Today I tried the yogadownload Sun Salutation Flow #2 again. I made it much farther this time, actually getting through the entire 30 min, although I did have to take a couple modifications at times. I also struggled to find the really fast flow. I enjoyed it though, although I still wish the guy leading it wouldn’t talk so much. He seems to have the mindset that yoga prepares you for meditation, which it does, but I often hold poses better when I’m in a meditation like state, which is hard to maintain when he is constantly talking.
