I could not fall asleep last night. π My mind kept wandering and worryingββmostly about the marathon and my foot, but other things too. I hate nights like that when you just can’t shut off your brain. Boo. Maybe I should just go back to bed and cuddle with the pug? I’m soΒ jealous of his βtoughβΒ life.
Breakfast
Despite having a sleepless night, waking up at 6:00 with Mal wasn’t all that bad. I expected to feel much worse!
I made us banana oatmeal with ground flaxseed, raisins, walnuts, and a scoop of peanut butter. It was a massive bowl of oatmeal! I’m so full now!
I also drank half of a glass of iced coffee with soy milk. (We ran out of iced coffee this morning.)
Question of the Day
What keeps you up at night?

I hate when I can’t sleep at night. The nights I can’t sleep are usually the nights when I go to sleep before I’m really exhausted. I have to read myself to sleep!
Ugh! Last night a migraine at 2:15. Miraculously I managed to get back to sleep after two Excedrin and a cup of coffee. I think my body was SO relieved that the pounding stopped.
Most nights it’s my almost 16 yo fur sweetie. She has kidney failure and has to go out every three to four hours, so I’m wandering around outside w/ her every night in the wee hours.
I couldn’t fall asleep either last night! Normally when I have a lot on my mind.
I was up last night because this morning I’m going to look at two dogs at the SPCA. I’m both excited to meet them but I also know I’m going to be really sad for all the animals we can’t adopt- it makes me so anxious π
I wish there was some type of exercise we could do to automatically shut our brain off at night. It happens to me all the time.
I hate the nights I just can’t fall asleep because I can’t shut my mind off. Then I try everything in the book (like counting sheep), which doesn’t work. Then I start trying to will myself to sleep, which also doesn’t work.
I hate when my head hits the pillow and I instantly start to worry about EVERYTHING! That happens to me often.
I can NEVER fall asleep if I have a huge project or exam the next day. The adrenaline and worry of turning it in keeps me up!
Ugh, it is the worst feeling to toss and turn in bed all night. That always happens before something I’m nervous about, like a big trip or a job interview.
Lately, it is my coaching business and money. I don’t typically have trouble falling asleep but I do wake up at crazy hours of the morning and not be able to go back to sleep.
Oh gosh, I’ve had three nights in a row like that! I’m really hoping tonight will be better for me, and now for you too. If only there was a switch for sleeping…
don’t hate me, but i really can’t think of too many times when i haven’t fallen asleep within minutes of my head hitting the pillow! the only time i can recall was because i accidentally fell asleep on the couch for several hours and then went to bed!
I was up last night worrying about my exam today! Ah!
I can’t sleep when I am stressed or worried. Lately it has been money/job π I just can’t wait to do what makes me happy, but I’m still at least a few months off from that.
I’m jelly of Murphy, too! I get the same way when I worry- I can’t sleep!
I slept ZERO last night! In fact I might crawl back in bed soon, I never do that but Im exhausted! My mind was running as always! I just got in a studio to teach dance trance and zumba, and dance trance I have to learn alot, so Im nervous and excited, that kept me up!
Last night it seemed to be the excitement of having today off – so weird
This happens to me often. Usually, I worry about work things mostly which sucks!
Last night nothing kept me up. I took a hot tub, went to bed at 9 and slept like a rock until 7. It was heaven!
And I can hardly stand how cute that pug is! I was Second Mummy to my sister’s pug, little Maggie (RIP.) Such a little ham.
I have major problems on Sunday nights; I can never sleep because I’m overthinking about the week ahead! I feel your pain.
I was up so late last night decorating cookies! When I finally went to bed I was out within seconds. Nothing much keeps me from sleep – but if I’m having trouble falling asleep, I tend to recite bible verses to myself to get my mind focused on God instead of what I’m worrying about.
@laine: Wow, that sounds fantastic. There’s nothing like feeling totally rested and relaxed.
I have no tips or tricks for sleeping through the night or falling asleep when you have a lot on your mind. I focus on my breathing to clear my mind (like in Yoga) but it hardly ever works as well.
I hate it when my brain won’t shut off. Sometimes I’m thinking of conversations I’ve had throughout the day or thinking about the day ahead.
And sometimes I just can’t, for the life of me, get in a comfortable position. I end up tossing and turning all night.
Awe I hate being restless at night. I can never sleep when I’m worrying about something, even when it seems trivial.
I’ve had a lot of nights like that! I usually get out of bed and try to make a list of everything I’m thinking about/worried about. Sometimes that clears my head and lets me fall asleep.
Other nights, I will get up and try to read something – chapter in a book, etc. That sometimes distracts me!
Stress!! I’m constantly thinking of work and what I have to do the next day!!! I try to write everything down that needs to be done so that I can relax and remember that those things can be checked off tomorrow.
Not sure where your foot hurts exactly, but you might have a heel spur, which is really not a big deal. I developed one a year ago and I still run 25 – 30 miles a week on it. The pain is usually most intense when I first wake up/stand up and start moving, but dissipates throughout the day. Either way, I wouldn’t let it ruin your marathon training, just listen to your body and don’t do anything if the pain is crippling.
I was up at 3:30 a.m., we are hosting house guests this weekend and it’s my last day of work until after the new year. I could not shut my brain off. I sat at my computer and edited photos, thought doing the dishes and cleaning might wake the hubs and dog. Ha! Now I’m exhausted for the day, so frustrating!
the holidays and everyday stress make most people loose sleep!! have you tried yoga or meditating before bed? warm water with honey and lemon might help calm your mind too! π murphy is so cute!!
I hate not being able to sleep! Usually I worry about the fact that I can’t sleep which just compounds the problem.
I find that journaling it out helps a little, but some nights are just like that. Hope you sleep better tonight!
I had a sleepless night last night as well! I’m not entirely sure why, but it could have been that I ran in the evening–instead of in the morning when I usually go.
I’m usually okay that morning, but the *following* morning is when the exhaustion hits me like a ton of bricks.
Reading blogs keeps me up at night!! I know I should switch off my computer but I don’t like going to bed with a Google Reader full of new posts. Then, once I get to bed, it’s usually mental lists that keep me up. I’ll be thinking about things I need to do the next day, posts I want to write, recipes I want to make…. sometimes I wish I could switch off completely and shut my brain up!
what keeps me up at night? financial stress, parenting stress, job pressures, keeping a roof over my head, worrying about my child, that kind of stuff π
Sorry you ran out of ice coffee and couldnt sleep!
Have you considered going to get a professional opinion on your foot? That may help you to stop overthinking about it π
I’ll often wake up in the middle of the night and have the hardest time falling back asleep. I’ll start to worry about all the things I need to get done…Luckily, giving Gus a belly rub usually will lull me back to sleep π
Sometimes the worst nights are those that I am tired, but my mind is racing so much that I can’t fall asleep. When that happens, I try a trick that my mom used to do with my when I was little: I imagine relaxing my toes, then my feet, then my calves, then my knees, etc. By the time I get to the top of my head I’m usually much more relaxed and able to sleep!
I was up till too-late-thirty last night baking cookies for my massage therapy classmates because I love them so! I prayed before I went to sleep to wake up feeling rested, and so far so good!
I’m like most of you…stress or excitement is what keeps me up at night. Although I admit that when I watch a scary movie, I totally think it’s gonna happen to me that night, too then I can’t sleep ‘coz I’m freaked out! The other night it was an alien movie (The Fourth Kind) then I kept thinking aliens were gonna come and get me…lol!
haha that is THE cutest picture of Murphy. When I am extremely stressed or excited I can’t sleep. Especially if I know I have to wake up at a certain time (to my alarm)…I’m always afraid I’ll sleep through it!
I hate when you can’t turn your brain off and sleep, it’s the worst ever. When I was quitting my job, moving, worrying about not having a new job yet, I lost tonssssss of sleep.
Worries always keep me up at night. I need to practice some deep breathing and letting go. Otherwise I will have permanent bags under my eyes. π
Last night…4 year old with chicken pox. But other nights, busy brain. Can’t stop thinking about work, kids, family, the list can be endless and at times rather stupid stuff to be keeping myself awake for.
If I have to travel anywhere for work, I won’t be able to get any sleep the night before. I’ll be way too panicky! And if for any reason I’ve suffered a humiliation or embarrassment, there goes my night’s sleep too!
I can see how an upcoming marathon might cause you to lose sleep. It’s a big deal. But you can do it. You’ve accomplished so much, this will happen for you I just know it! Go Tina!
Worrying totally keeps me up..as does my job. I even dream about it which makes for extremely restless sleep.
Hope you can catch up this weekend!
Thinking about what I have to accomplish the next day or next several days keeps me up at night from time to time. I find that reading a book or my Bible helps me quiet my thoughts so that I can go to sleep.
I typically can’t fall asleep when I know I have a long list of to do’s to get through the next day. Usually it’s work related. I heard making a list the night before is supposed to work, but I’ve never tried it. Murphy does have it easy, he looks nice and warm.
I hate restless nights! I usually get them when I’m stressed about school or a race.
my mind and body takes a while to turn off, so my boyfriend will often lightly scratch my back until i calm down (i know, i’m lucky!) or when i’m really amped up i’ll listen to my favorite podcast, “this american life”. i downloaded the ap and you can listen to all of their archived shows. don’t be surprised if you develop a crush on ira glass!
@Tricia: I don’t have health insurance. π
Ohh, Im sorry about your sleepless night, have you seen a podiatrist for your foot? I experienced the same injury you are having now with lacrosse. One day I was on the field and all of a sudden I felt this pain like i have never had before! I hope your foot gets better soon :)! Stress keeps me up at night i.e. student loans, looking and feeling good, grades, jobs stuff like that.
