Reader Question: Mac vs. PC

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

The other day, I received an email from a reader asking which type of computer I prefer:

I just want to say that I love your blog! I just have a question for you. I was wondering what type of computer do you currently us to blog? I see you have a Mac and PC. I am a new blogger and I am also in the market for a new computer, I am contemplating a MAC. Thanks so much for your input.

I use both types of computers, but I prefer a PC for blogging; a Mac for everything else.

When I first started blogging, I bought a brand new 13-inch MacBook. I absolutely loved it, but it wasn’t ideal for creating blog posts with a lot of photos because uploading them to WordPress (or Blogger) took forver. Eventually, someone told me about a blogging program called Ecto. At first, I thought Ecto was the answer to all of my problems. I could quickly upload photos, change their sizes, and blog offline. After awhile, however, Ecto was no longer a reliable friend to me. There were many times that I spent well over an hour composing a post, only to hit publish, and have it totally erase. It was the most frustrating thing ever! Basically, I wasted a lot of time with Ecto, and I couldn’t trust it.

Eventually, I learned how to fix Ecto, which sort of solved my problems at least temporarily. But, after awhile, I just got sick of taking the time to uninstall and reinstall it. Around this same time, I really wanted to buy a desktop computer, so I could more effectively separate my blogging life from my real life. With my laptop, my work just followed me around the house and cut into valuable family time.

I considered buying a Mac desktop, but I really didn’t need all of the bells and whistles that came with it, especially for the price that I was going to pay. I hadn’t purchased a PC since the late 1990’s, but I figured by 2011, they improved quite a bit, so I bought a much cheaper HP desktop computer with everything that I needed. Overall, it’s been a great computer, especially for blogging.

The reason it’s been such a great computer is because I can use Windows Live Writer (WLW) with it! (You can also use WLW on Macs; you just need to get Parallels.) Windows Live Writer is a kick-ass blogging software, and it has changed the way I blog–  for the better! To put it bluntly, Ecto is crap compared to Windows Live Writer. With WLW you can blog offline, save drafts, upload multiple photos at once, drag and drop photos, use keyboard shortcuts, auto link keywords, not have your posts erased, and much more!

So, in conclusion, I prefer a PC for blogging, but I will always be a Mac gal at heart.

Lunch was kind of random today. I wasn’t really in the mood for anything specific, so I ended up just throwing some of my favorite foods together and called it a meal. I had a Bagel Thin with peanut butter, pitted dates, and almonds. It hit the spot.

Busy evening ahead!

  1. Noo I drag and drop photos in ecto! It’s the only way I CAN get photos onto it lol!!
LOVE that lunch – that’s a lunch of dreams right there (dates being one of my favourite foods…:p)

  2. I love WLW. I had been blogging for several months before I learned about it, and after I used it I couldn’t believe I had been blogging all that time without it!

  3. I love my Mac… not sure if I’d be able to part with it. I wish WLW was compatible with Mac without it being so complicated. Mac needs to step up and create some killer blogging software 🙂

  4. I’ve always loved PC’s. But Mac is all the rage right now. I’d be open to checking it out but it’s so expensive! I don’t think I could justify the expense when I have a perfectly good PC I could buy.

  5. You might want to add that for a new blogger like her, Ecto and WordPress Dashboard would work fine. I use Ecto and the dashboard together (start a post in Ecto and then format in dashboard). It’s not ideal, but there are features in both that I like.
I love my Mac to pieces.

  6. I am thinking about getting an HP Desktop. What Operating system did you get? I have heard mixed feelings.

  7. I think that lunches where you just eat all your favorites are the best! My husband works late on Wednesdays and isn’t home for dinner so that is usually what I don for dinner on Wednesdays. I just think about what sounds good and if it doesn’t all go…eh…oh well. Like tonight I have feeling that it will involve Greek yogurt with walnuts, an orange, s,and ome asparagus…random but good!

  8. Totally agree about Mac vs. pc. I use to get so frustrated waiting for photos to upload to my blog on the Mac. I have a pc on which I use WLW. I must confess, though, that all blogs look better on a Mac screen.

  9. I have a Mac (got it almost a year ago) and I love it, BUT for blogging purposes, it’s crap! I’m definitely going to think about purchasing Parallels so I can run WLW on my Mac. I spend too much time with blogging it’s CRAZY! I need a streamlined process!

  10. I haven’t had much experience working with Macs..but from what I have done, they can be a bit confusing…especially if all you’ve ever used is a PC. Good to hear you actually like PCs over Macs for blogging. 🙂

  11. I’ve never had a Mac other than my iPhone and iPad, but I would like to get one in the near future just for everything else besides blogging.

I am in the process of moving all of my blogging tools to my Linux operating system (PC). I made a partition on my Vista machine. I like it so far!

  12. I’m a PC girl too, especially for blogging. Price is a huge consideration, but also service and warranty. Every time my hubby’s MacBook has an issue, he has to take it to an Apple store where it will probably be for a week and we’re fighting over my PC – no onsite warranty options. For my Dell, a tech is onsite the next day if I have a hardware problem which is really important.

  13. I will soon be shopping for a new computer, so this post is really helpful. I have a work computer but am really trying to minimize all the non-work related things I use it for. I have always been a PC girl, and now with a blog, I think I will continue to be…although, Macs are so cool and seem so fun to work with. We’ll see…

  14. I love my MAC and after 5 years don’t think I could ever go back. I had way to many crashes and viruses on Windows and no problems with the macbook. I just blog on the dashboard because I’m not really looking for anything fancy at the moment. I used ecto but hated it and I’m surprised there aren’t more options out there for Macs.

  15. Thank you for this post, Tina!!!

“To put it bluntly, Ecto is crap compared to Windows Live Writer. “–

I have tried Ecto a half dozen times and EVERY time I try it except for once, it has eaten a post, and seriously, after having 4 posts munched, i.e. 4 hrs of post time plus another 4 hrs to re-do each post, i will not ever be an Ecto girl.

Parallels. There’s also VMWare but the problem w/ those is that they slow down your Mac AND many times, you still need to buy the Windows licensing, platform, etc to get Windows programs like WLW to run on your Mac. I looked into it all and between buying real versions of all the software and licenses, it was gonna get really pricey! And everyone told me slow.

So, I blog from the regular WP platform b/c I am a Mac girl…I wish to god there was a better way shy of having multiple computers. Which I do have. They are all Macs tho.

Sorry to ramble but this post is near and dear to me b/c ive posed this question to my readers many times in hopes of a magic bullet solution, but so far, nothing. Sigh.

  16. what a great post! I just bought my macbook pro a last month and fell in love! I really love my mac! Everyone finds what works for them : )

  17. oh dear, ..thanks for the tip! I tried live writer and it makes life a lot easier (no more photoshop, editing html, copy and pasting).

I can relate to those web editing environments that eat entire posts. Aggravation central!

  18. Random lunches must have been in the air today because I had a really random lunch too. Yogurt with granola. Totally light and totally breakfast for lunch.

  19. I use WLW to write my blog but feel like there is a lot of stuff you can do to make a better blog but maybe I just don’t know how to do it. Would you consider doing a WLW for dummies post. I would so LOVE it! Thanks 😀

  20. I use Mars Edit on a Mac. I’ve never used WLW though so I don’t know how to compare the two. I liked Mars Edit more than Ecto when I tried them both out.

    1. Pretty much for the reasons I mentioned above, but photos were the main reason. It just took so long for them to upload into WP. It takes just seconds to upload a ton of photos in WLW.
