“Oat Bran” + My Last Meal On Earth

I whipped up another delicious “minus the oats” breakfast this morning. This time, I went for a creamier version, which reminded me a lot of oat bran. The texture looked and tasted SO MUCH like the real deal.

“Oat Bran” Minus the Oats


  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • 3/4 cup liquid egg whites (or 3 egg whites)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla (or almond) extract


  1. Whisk together egg whites and almond milk and then stir in ground flax, banana, vanilla extract, and cinnamon; blend well.
  2. In a medium saucepan, warm the mixture on the stove, stirring frequently, until the “oat bran” reaches the desired consistency; this should only take a few minutes.
  3. Top with berries, nut butter, seeds, or whatever else your little heart desires.

Serves 1

I also added fresh blackberries and peanut butter to my “oat bran.” And, of course, I enjoyed a glass of iced coffee with soy milk with my breakfast.

I really love these “minus the oats” breakfasts because they keep me satisfied for hours and hours””even more so than my regular oatmeal! This morning, for example, I ate breakfast around 7:30 AM, and just now at 12:30 PM, I’m finally hungry!

After breakfast, I took Murphy to the park. He’s been waiting all week for a chance to stretch his pug legs, so he was psyched to go this morning. I mean, doesn’t his face just say it all?

Question of the Day

After reading about Bob Harper’s last meal on earth, I thought it would be fun to pose the same question to you guys!

If it was your last day on earth, what meal would be your last? 

Hands down, without question, my last meal would be a loaf of French bread, a tasting board of stinky cheeses, and a bottle of white wine. I’d finish off the meal with a vanilla cupcake topped with a ton of buttercream frosting and sprinkles. I’d probably throw an iced coffee in there, too.



  1. My last meal would start with foie gras pate and a baguette, then move onto risotto with sweet green peas and roast chicken with truffle salt. Wash it all down with a bottle of good red wine, and have tiramisu for dessert!

  2. Mine would be:

    Mexican Layer Dip with Tostitos Scoops (the scoops part is essential)

    And then a smorgasbord of desserts: carrot cake, coconut cake, a melty chocolate chip cookie, and a brownie sundae. If I were forced to pick one, it would be the brownie sundae.

  3. Linguine in tomato sauce with lots of fresh seafood, chili flakes, parmesan and warm crusty bread to mop up the sauce! Dessert would be in the form of a buffet with fresh choc chip cookies, vanilla ice cream and peanut butter cheesecake #oinkoink

  4. I used to want a perfectly toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon as my last meal, but now I think an assortment of cheeses and cured meats with the perfect french bread sounds like a better deal. Skip the wine and add a scotch though!

  5. It would somehow include all of the following:
    – garlic bread
    – onion rings from The Works
    – pizza with tons of chicken, bacon, pineapple
    – breakfast sausage
    – garlic and onion homefries from my fave breakfast place
    – ice cream sundae
    – cheesecake

    It would be a nutso smorgasbord.

  6. I think pizza and salad or bread and salad – I always swear to people that I could live on that!

    I definitely want to try the “minus-the-oats” breakfast! I used to eat eggs every morning because I swore it was the one thing that kept me full (turns out oatmeal also does a pretty darn good job 😉 )

  7. that’s SUCH a hard question, but i would have to say: angel hair pasta in my grandma’s white clam sauce as well as a separate bowl in her marinara sauce (i can’t choose). for dessert, a big bowl of hagan dazs vanilla bean ice cream and a slab of coconut cake on the side. YUM.

  8. I don’t like oatmeal at all. I’ll eat oats in cookies or uncooked in things, but as a breakfast dish, I’ve tried it a million and one ways and still don’t like it. 🙁 I’m always so jealous of those who can eat it every day and stay full for crazy long periods of time. I’m going to try out some of these “no oats” options and maybe I’ll fall in love with one of them instead.

  9. Why not go out with a bang! I would start with some brie and a baguette and then move onto a Maine lobster with a bottle of nice champagne and finish it off with a bar of dark chocolate 🙂

    Now I’m hungry!!

  10. I’d have to go with chicken Parmesan as my main course and warm and gooey chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream on top for dessert. Yum!

  11. Oooh great question!! I think mine would include an appetizer of shrimp cocktail, a main course of salmon cooked on a cedar plank (I’d eat that every night if I could!) and cookie dough ice cream for dessert (or a big slice of pumpkin pie with pecans if my last meal was taking place in the fall.. ya know.. just to be seasonal!)

  12. I’m a southern girl at heart, so definitely fried chicken, sweet potato fries and corn bread with chocolate cake and Reese’s Cups for dessert. I just made myself so hungry! 😉

    Mine would be a steak (probably ny strip) topped with bleu cheese with a side of asparagus and a big bottle of red. 🙂

  14. Definitely fried pickles to start. Then spaghetti alla carbonara and some duck confit. And end with a simple dark chocolate cupcake with vanilla butter cream frosting. Clearly my tastes/cravings are all over the place!

  15. I would want my last meal on Earth to be prepared by my great aunt (even though she passed away a few years ago. For nostalgia’s sake, I’m sticking with it, though!) She was the best cook ever, and I’d love to have one last taste of her traditional Jewish foods: knishes, potato kugel, kasha, brisket. Just thinking about it is making my mouth water! Then, as my dessert, I’d throw back a big piece of death by chocolate cake with extra frosting. Go big, right? ; )

  16. Oh man~last meal on earth? that’s a tough one! I’d say, lots of cupcakes, sushi, Argentinean pizza (the best!!!), and this really delicious duck meat dish that I had at a French restaurant. Mmmmmmm! Wish I could have some again, very soon. 😛 And that oatless oatmeal sounds good~I’m intrigued.

  17. Hey Tina. Just wondering what’s wrong with oats and why you suddenly don’t want to eat them? Or is it just to try something different?

    It is hard for me to pick just one meal, but it would definitely involve a potato dish, a gooey/cheesy pasta dish, lots of chocolate cake, and WINE 🙂

  18. Red wine, filet mignon, my mom’s mac & cheese, and finish it off with a hot brownie with ice cream, hot fudge, m&ms and whipped cream – plus a cherry =)

  19. I think the oat-less oat bran is the coolest thing ever. I definitely will need to try it out sometime. That is such a hard question. I think I would just eat all of my favorite things. Sweet potato, nut butter, froyo, chocolate, & more that I cannot even think of.

  20. i really do need to try these oatless oats! i’ve forgotten about them the past two mornings. tomorrow it is! 😉

    if i had to choose my last meal on earth, i’d go for mexican all the way. i’d start with tortilla chips and guac, then have green chili chicken enchiladas with a side of refried beans for my main course and a margarita to sip of course. my dessert would be a huge fudge brownie sundae.

  21. my last meal on earth: a huge dessert platter, escargot, a holiday turkey sandwich from earl of sandwich, a simple plate of pasta, and a huge tub of ice cream….and loads of caramel macchiato!

  22. Oats already keep me full for five hours, I can’t imagine any longer! I think my last meal would include all sorts of gluten, dairy, soy, almonds, pineapple, watermelon and everything else that totally messes up my stomach because I miss it all! And if I was going to die soon afterwards I wouldn’t have to deal with the consequences.

  23. That is a tough one, I think my last meal might be a mixture of things! French toast with banana’s and peanut butter, a perfect cup of coffee, frozen yogurt with every topping and maybe a slice of Chicago deep dish style pizza!

  24. My Last Meal would have to be:
    A Fideo Soup that my aunt makes
    and mini slider burgers
    Pesto Pizza
    BBQ Pizza
    Hawaiian Pizza (extra pineapples)
    Lasagna with Extra Garlic(y) bread
    Carrot Cake and Fro Yo

    Cause of Death:
    Food Coma!

  25. I always struggle with that question depending on what I’m craving whenever I’m asked. I think my meal would start out with Thai summer rolls and peanut sauce and a big bowl of yellow curry and rice. Clearly, I’m craving Thai right now.

I would have sweet potato fries with a chipotle dip and ketchup for dipping to start, a spinach strawberry chicken salad for the salad, pumpkin soup for the soup, and homemade pizza with lots of spinach and veggies. Caramel frozen yogurt for dessert. I am going ALL out with my favs for the last night!! 🙂

    I love eggs in the a.m. too!!

  27. Now that I’m gluten free, all I want is bread, bread, bread. So, my last meal would be bread and salted butter and some good cheese, too. I would drink Kir Royales (champagne and creme de cassis), and for dessert I would have carrot cake and cinnamon ice cream. Now I’m hungry.

  28. I’ve been doing it with 1/3 cup oatmeal instead of the flax…it is SO satisfying! Not hungry for 3-4 hours!

    My last meal would probably be fresh sourdough, sharp cheddar, and a mocha from Philz coffee.
    And some cream-filled chocolate cake.

  30. I’m getting more and more intrigued by these “oat less” breakfasts. Might have to try it out!
    I’m always shocked when people can pick their last or favorite meal. I honestly like WAY too many foods to be able to even attempt to narrow it down!

  31. Hmmm…would have to be the Feast for Two from the Crab Pot in Seattle. Snow and King Crab legs, shrimp, mussels, clams, throw in a few lobster tails, corn and sausage. Maybe a (few) bottles of red wine and flourless chocolate cake for dessert. The WHOLE cake. And espresso!

  32. Love your last meal idea! Mine would be very similar, expect I’d add some angel hair pasta with pomodoro sauce (<3 fresh tomato sauce!) and instead of a vanilla cupcake, I'd go with a slice of chocolate cake. Holy yum!
