No More Excuses: Motivation In No-Man’s-Land

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Good morning! Happy Hump Day!

Here’s a little something to make you smile:

I think if I had to pick my favorite homemade meal, it would be pizza. I love it so much. The melt-y cheese, doughy crust, endless toppings”¦ it just never gets old. I could probably eat homemade pizza every day of the week. Mmm!

Ok, maybe I’m weird, but I got really excited about last night’s dinner. We had homemade pizza topped with green bell pepper, onion, and pepperoni and salads on the side. It was so delish.

The scene on our dining room table:

After dinner, Mal and I both craved something sweet, so I whipped up a batch of Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies. We only had 1/4 stick of butter, so I just made a small batch of cookies.

The words “Toll House” are now a pug buzzword in our house. Murphy lost his sh*t over those words last night. I’m not sure what it sounds like, but it makes him totally bug out. Maybe he loves cookies as much as I do?

For breakfast this morning, I made scrambled eggs with chopped broccoli, tomato, and onions and piece of whole wheat toast with sunflower butter spread on top.

Feel Great Weight

I don’t know about you, but I always struggle with sticking to my regular workout routine this time of year. The warm summer sun is long gone, but my New Year’s motivation hasn’t kicked in yet. It’s almost as if I’m in no-man’s-land in November and December.

With the craziness of the holiday season, the last thing I have time for (or want to do) is exercise, but I know if I don’t fit in some quality sweat sessions, I’ll ring in the new year a few pounds heavier””and it’s tough to feel festive when my pants are too tight! Here are some typical excuses for skipping your workout and how to overcome them: No More Excuses: 4 Ways to Stick to Fall Workouts.

Be Thankful Challenge

I’m thankful for turning the clocks back. It’s been so much easier getting out of bed in the morning!

Question of the Day

How do you stay motivated to exercise during the holiday season? Do you find it more difficult than other times of the year?

P.S. I’m hosting a cereal giveaway on Trading Up Downtown today!

  1. I keep up motivation by signing up for a few thanksgiving day and Christmas races. It motivates me to keep up with my workouts and the races rare always fun. Don’t run for time but just to enjoy the race spirit. By the time new years comes, I’m running for long spring races and my new years goals. It is hard because it’s so dark before I get out of work but I also make getting 3-4 workout a nonnegotiable, must do them, like brushing my teeth. Even if the are short 30 minute workouts. You can do anything for 30 minutes, and when those are difficult I break them up not 15 minutes workout of different things, elliptical, stairs, weights, running, etc. Only4.5 more months of darkness left!

  2. signing up for holiday races helps to keep me motivated! This weekend I’m doing the “cranberry crawl”, on Thanksgiving I’m running a “turkey trot”, and then on December 3 I’m running the “DC Hot Chocolate” race. They keep me motivated!

  3. I just joined a gym . . . for the first time in 20 years!! I’ve been walking outside, doing DVDs and hitting the treadmill at home, but I’m hoping having a gym with different options will motivate me this winter.

Last night I went to my first Pilates class! I’ve done the DVDs for 4 years, but was surprised as she corrected my form and WOW am I sore today! It’s only offered once a week, but I’ve added it to my calendar as a must do!

  4. Homemade pizza is always a hit in our house. Proscuitto with fresh arugala is a great combo!
I always want to make chocolate chip cookies, but I hate having a ton of them laying around because they’ll inevitably get eaten and who needs all those extra calories? Making a smaller batch is smart!

  5. My boyfriend and I love making homemade pizza as well! I just joined a gym near my house and started working out early in the morning to knock it out before any excuses can be made.

  6. I think it’s easier to stay motivated to exercise during the summer. Winter months means yummy food and added clothing to hide extra weight. Summer brings on bathing suit season…all the more reason to stay motivated so I guess nothing motivates me during the Winter. ;(

  7. This time of year is definitely the hardest to be motivated!!!! -Especially when you can cover the muffin top with cute Northface fleeces!

  8. Ahahahahahhaa that picture is hysterical. And now we know why pugs are the way they are.

As for exercising during the holidays, I guess I just try NOT to think of it as a different time of year in the exercise-sense…I just think of it as any other day! Exercise is part of my daily routine, so I just keep it there.

  9. Love the cartoon! Funny this time of year I tend to lose or maintain weight, well kind of, I have more motivation when it’s cold, plus I think I try to get a head start on New Years. Then February, March come around and I hit the wall and give up. Mainly because I didn’t lose any weight or I feel no progress, stupid I know. I’ve been going strong for about 3 weeks, I hope I can stick to it! The holidays are scary with all the cookies and baking and at work a lot of birthdays and that means I have to bake cupcakes, needless to say I’m making cupcakes right now. Two birthdays tomorrow! Geez, that means double batch!

  10. Yes! I completely relate to struggling with my workouts this time of year! And I’m even a fitness professional : / I promise I’m not trying to do a shameless plug but I did just start a free pre-holiday Pilates program on my website. It’s totally free and I post new workouts each week. If you’re interested in adding Pilates in let me know. Tina- I know you recently mentioned that you want to get more into Pilates! It’s nice to be able to work out from home during the cold, busy months 🙂

  11. I’m with the others in remembering that holidays are no different than any other days in the year. A Thanksgiving Day and Christmas morning run are a few of my favorites. I feel so refreshed afterward and experience not one iota of guilt about having eggnog and pumpkin pie for breakfast afterward.

  12. My motivation/resolve is close to zero these days. It is a constant struggle to make the healthy choice and to get my butt to the gym. AND it’s not even close to cold here in Texas. Not sure what my problem is!
