Black Cat 10 Miler

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Success! I am so proud of myself! My goal for the Black Cat 10 Miler was to finish under 90 minutes, and I did it!!

Monica, Chandra, and I woke up bright and early to drive to Salem for the race. We needed to pick up our race packets, so we made sure to get an early start. Unfortunately, we didn’t get there early enough because the race people “ran out” of t-shirts. Wicked bummer.

Monica and Chandra each received a shirt, but I didn’t. I know it’s just a shirt, but the shirt is one of the best parts about running a race!! It’s a little memento that always reminds you of race day when you wear it.

I guess what bothered me most about the whole thing was there was no rhyme or reason for giving out the shirts. The three of us pre-registered for the race months ago and we all picked up our packets at the exact same time. Plus, a number of runners, who picked up their packets after us, still received shirt. It made no sense. I know it’s just a shirt, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Ok, I’m done complaining. Sometimes, I just need to vent.

Ok, back to the race recap!

Promptly at 8 o’clock, we lined up at the start line.

And then we were off!

Monica and I stuck together for the first 3 miles or so, but I lost her on a big hill.

My little legs just couldn’t keep up. She was en fuego!

The course was a little hilly and very scenic. Salem is such an adorable town.

I felt pretty good for the entire race. I lost a little steam around Mile 9, but I finished strong and ended up coming in at 1:29:23, which was an average pace of 8:57! That’s fast for me!!!

  • Mile 1: 8:39
  • Mile 2: 8:48
  • Mile 3: 9:00
  • Mile 4: 8:44
  • Mile 5: 8:49
  • Mile 6: 9:11
  • Mile 7: 9:02
  • Mile 8: 9:04
  • Mile 9: 9:20
  • Mile 10: 8:35

After the race, I had a huge smile on my face! I was so happy and proud of myself– and I didn’t care about that stupid race shirt anymore.

I bought my own green shirt to remember the race by. It says: “The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude.” Indeed it is.

YAY!!! We did it!!

After the race, we headed back to my house. On the ride home, we stopped by Marylou’s for iced coffee, and I snacked on a banana and a Matt Damon Cookie.

All in all, it was a great race. I’m so glad that I had Chandra and Monica to run it with me! Good times.

  1. I would be the same way about the t-shirt!

Last year I ran a 10 mile race and there were no finisher medals — it isn’t that we were promised one or that they ran out, but it was such a bummer to get to the end of the race and not get a medal 🙁

  2. Congrats on beating your goal time- way to go!!! Oooo that shirt thing would piss me off– that happened to me once but it was for a run that didn’t have an entrance fee, just a canned good donation, so it’s not as bad. That still bothered me though so I don’t blame you!!

  3. Aw that stinks about the shirt! Thank god I have never had this happen to me because I would legit lose it if I didn’t get a shirt. It’s JUST a shirt…but when you pay (sometimes outrageous) for a race, you should get a shirt!

  4. Congrats on finishing under your goal time!! And I know what you mean about not getting a tshirt…thats one of the things about races that I look forward to the most! And it double sucks cause the shirts actually look like good ones!

  5. I got the same shirt at that race today!! It’s wierd they wouldn’t give you a race shirt! The first 300 registered were supposed to get one!

  6. Amazing accomplishment! I am slowly building my pace and distance with running. Not where you are yet but I did my best pace this week and it is really encouraging that I’m progressing!

  7. Sorry about the shirt! That would leave a bad taste in my mouth too. I think they should make sure they have enough shirts for all of the racers!

But major congrats on the race! You are awesome!

  8. Congrats on your great time!!! I actually saw you running and yelled out.. GO TINA! you waved but were unsure of who said it to you! You should get in contact with them because when I finished the 20 miler I went in and they had more shirts for people that didn’t recieve one. I felt the same way because when I picked up my packet I didn’t get a shirt and my friend that registered this week got one. They told me to come back after and they had one, so I would get in contact with them and maybe they have more. Congrats again you did awesome and looked great running!

  9. Thanks for the recap! I was thinking about signing up for the 10 miler, but my friend ran the half marathon organized by the same group in September and she advised against it (due to the support and availability of porta potties not being exactly what she had anticipated). The half ended up being so big that late finishers didn’t get a medal that day (and my friend finished in just under 3 hours so she missed out on one). I’m not sure if they ever mailed it to her.

Congrats on meeting your goal! That’s always a great feeling. 🙂

  10. I ran the same race today! Finished in just under 2 hours, which is good for me since I have never run 10 miles..EVER!

Did you get your “Be Positive” t-shirt on their “karma” system where you gave them your email address and they will bill you later? So cool!

  11. Great job on the race!!! 😀
Love the shirt you bought! How cool!
As for the race shirt, could you possibly call the race organizers and see if they will mail you one? They ran out of small shirts at a race I did one time and they mailed me my shirt a few weeks later when they ordered more.

  12. congrats…as for the t shirt after helping organize a race i know first hand that things can get mixed up so easily and i’m sure they wanted to be accommodating, but sometimes your hands are tied…

  13. Great recap and awesome job on the race!

I live on the North Shore and ran the Devil’s Chase 6.66 Mile race in Salem, MA this past Halloween! It was SO much fun! I highly recommend it as a fun race, everyone wore a costume! I think the Black Cat is put on by the same race company? Either way, I almost signed up for this, and maybe I’ll consider it next year 🙂

  14. I would have been heartbroken over the shirt! I almost killed someone at my last marathon when I finished at the front of the female pack and there didn’t appear to be any medals 😉

Love your new shirt though, and that you were able to turn the day around. I would e-mail the organizers though and complain, because it’s really not good enough: you paid your entry fee, and deserve a ‘proper’ shirt as much as anyone else. Now it’s all over the blog I’m sure they’ll come grovelling to you on their knees (and so they should!) offering a new shirt though!

  15. I agree, the shirt is one of the best parts! I don’t blame you for being a little peeved 🙂 Great job though, it was an awesome morning for a race!!

  16. What a fun race! I did a 7 miler once in Gloucester and it was a killer. It seemed like the whole race was uphill and it was in July, so it was hot. But fun! I love the North Shore area.

Do you consider yourself a North Shore or a South Shore gal? 😉

  17. Congrats on a great race and making your goal. I would be pissed if I didn’t get a shirt too. I mean, they should have enough shirts for everyone that registered.
