The final day of our foodie tour of Washington, DC kicked off with a visit to Ben’s Chili Bowl, which is home to one of city’s signature dishes: the half-smoke chili dog.
Ben’s is also famous for serving hot dogs to famous faces such as Bill Cosby and President Obama. Here’s where the President sat!
We ended up not eating anything from Ben’s since lunch was just around the corner, but I definitely want to try a chili dog from there the next time I am in DC!
After leaving Ben’s Chili Bowl, we explored the Little Ethiopia area of DC. Did you know that DC is home to more Ethiopian restaurants than any other city outside of Africa? Many of these restaurants are clustered around U Street.
For lunch, we visited Habesha Market & Restaurant. We asked our tour guide why she picked this particular restaurant over others since there are soo many to choose from in Little Ethiopia. She said the staff is really friendly and the food is delicious. Perfect.
We started with super strong Ethiopian coffee. It was awesome, but, holy moly, it was powerful. This stuff will put hair on your chest!
To eat, we shared stews, veggies, meats, and lentils on a circular piece of bread, called injera.
In Ethiopia, small pieces of injera are torn and used to grasp the various foods for eating. The injera under the food soaks up the juices and flavors, so after everything is gone, the bread is also consumed.
Basically, the injera is food, eating utensils, a napkin, and a plate all at the same time. It was a lot of fun to share food this way.
