I’ve learned that if you want to run in New England, you need to become an all-weather runner. In the past six months, I’ve practically run in it all:
Rain.
Snow.
Heat.
Ok, I ran in Snowmageddon on a treadmill, but I should get some brownie points for venturing out into the most treacherous weather I’ve seen in my adult life. It’s awful outside!
On my way to the gym, I totally rocked the running pants + snow boots. Man, I felt cool.
Workout
At the gym, I channeled my inner Hungry Runner Girl and ran 10 miles on the treadmill. I still can’t believe I didn’t die of boredom!
I planted myself in front of two TVs.
And I had enough Lady Gaga to launch the Spanish Armada. I was ready to run.
To keep myself entertained for 10 miles, I used the workout below, which is based off one of my favorites, and did it two times from beginning to end.
The first 4.86 miles flew! I’m still shocked how quickly they went by. I guess I was just feeling it… or maybe I blacked out?
Once I reached 45 minutes, I stopped the treadmill, caught my breath, and chugged some water before repeating the whole workout again. I didn’t need to warm-up this time, so I went right into the workout at 6.5 on the treadmill.
At the end of Round 2, I still hadn’t reached 10 miles, so I ran for an extra couple of minutes until I reached my goal. I finished in 1:32:07 (9:12/pace), which is a great time, but slower than my previous 10-milers. Is it possible to run slower on a treadmill?
Snack
Before heading to the gym, I snacked on a Blueberry Muffin Larabar that I was sent to sample. It was tasty (very blueberry muffin-like), but not my favorite Larabara ever. I still think Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip is my favorite.
Lunch
After my epic treadmill run, I quickly showered and made lunch. Usually, I’m not very hungry immediately after a long run, but I was starving today!
I made a chicken salad sandwich, but, instead of mayo, I used avocado.
I had it on a whole wheat English muffin with butternut squash on the side.
After lunch, I enjoyed half of an English muffin with almond butter and butterscotch chips on top. Mmm! I missed this treat!
Where did today go!?!

also, i ALWAYS run slower on a treadmill .. when i run outside, I never run a pace slower than 8:30/mm (I usually average out at the end of a 8-12 mile run at 8:06/mm), but on a treadmill, I struggle to even keep a 9:00/mm for more than 5 or 6 miles .. though it may be because I always jack up the incline to at least 3. I just dread treadmill running but our streets are covered in ice and snow right now from snowmageddon. 🙁
Great job on the long treadmill run! This sounds all too familiar! I just trained for a marathon in Chicago from September through January… long treadmill runs, running in snow and ice. It was all worth it to run my first marathon in Charleston on 1/15! I just signed up for the 2011 Chicago Marathon and will be training in heat and humidity.
Wow! That motivation to do 10 miles on a Treadmill, I hate those things. I am just getting into running but so far loving every minute of it!!! I cant go very far but every day I try to push myself even farther. Your food ideas are so yummy sounding, cant wait to try them… I am always down for new reciepes espically healthy ones!!!
