• What to Pack for a 10-Day Vacation

    May 1, 2012

    Hi, friends!

Remember my 10-Day Packing Challenge? If not, I basically tried to get all of this:

    Into these two carry-ons:

I eventually made it happen, but it was quite the packing challenge!

    • 4 tank tops
    • 1 sweatshirt
    • 3 pairs of shorts
    • 2 pairs of jeans
    • 1 pair of capris
    • 5 bathing suits
    • 4 bras (3 regular, 1 strapless)
    • 12 pairs of undies
    • 7 pairs of socks
    • 2 dressy tops
    • 4 dresses
    • 2 pairs of flip flops
    • 1 pair of heels
    • 1 pair of sneakers
    • 1 pair of flats
    • 1 purse
    • 1 beach bag (foldable)
    • 5 workout tops
    • 3 pairs of workout shorts
    • 6 sports bras

What I actually wore on my vacation:

    • 4 t-shirts
    • 1 long-sleeve shirt
    • 2 tank tops
    • 1 sweatshirt
    • 2 pairs of shorts
    • 2 pairs of jeans
    • 1 pair of capris
    • 5 bathing suits
    • 4 bras
    • 10 pairs of undies
    • 5 pairs of socks
    • 1 dressy top
    • 4 dresses
    • 2 pairs of flip flops
    • 1 pair of heels
    • 1 pair of sneakers
    • 1 pair of flats
    • 1 purse
    • 1 beach bag
    • 5 workout tops

Figuring out what clothes to pack wasn’t all that difficult, but deciding what shoes to bring was pretty tough. I always want to bring a zillion pairs! I ended packing one pair of sneakers, one pair of casual flats, one pair of heels, and two pairs of flip flops (one for walking around and one for hanging around the pool). It ended up working out pretty well, but I sort of wished I had packed a “dressy” pair of flats/sandals too.

    My packing tips:

    • Wear your biggest/bulkiest items when you travel. I wore jeans, a sweatshirt, and sneakers on the plane to and from Miami to save space in my suitcase.
    • Roll everything. Instead of folding my clothing, I tightly rolled everything to save room.
    • Stuff small items (i.e. socks, undies, sports bras) into your shoes to make space for other items in your suitcase.
    • Layer “hard to soft.” I packed “hard” items, like shoes and my curling iron, on the bottom of my suitcase and then layered “softer” (rolled) items on top. Clothes that I didn’t care about wrinkling (i.e. workout gear, PJs), I rolled and stuffed around the edges of my suitcase.
    • Pick one color palette. I picked black (as opposed to brown) and then chose my accessories (i.e. shoes, purse) in that same color. Then, I picked a few colors that would go with it and then mixed and matched different pieces of clothing to make outfits.
    • Don’t be afraid to wear things more than once. I ended up wearing a number of items more than once on our cruise (jeans, shorts, and a couple of my dresses). As long as they’re not dirty and don’t smell, why not, right?
    • Accessorize! Accessories are a great way to dress up an outfit and make it more exciting. They’re also easy to pack and don’t take up much space, so I brought a bunch of jewelry on the cruise and ended up wearing almost all of it.

    Breakfast

For breakfast this morning, I whipped up a batch of “Oatmeal” Minus the Oats with two huge scoops of almond butter in the mix. I pretty much ate almond butter for breakfast with a little bit of “oatmeal.”

    Lunch

Lunch was leftover Mediterranean Stuffed Peppers. This time, I ate them both—plus an orange and a handful of butterscotch chips (because I’m addicted).

These are all great tips! I recently started picking one color scheme for my outfits & accessories and it helps save so much room! We also bought one of the space saver bags from the container store but haven’t used it, but I’m excited to see if it helps me get more into my suitcase.

Thank you so much for giving me this list. Quite frankly this is my first out of state vacation in about 4 years (Going to LA from San Antonio) and I was completely clueless as to what I should wear and how to pack! This list with some revision is exactly what makes sense to me!
