Hooray for date night!
Clearly, Murphy wasn’t psyched at all for date night since he wasn’t invited. No pug allowed. Mal, however, was pretty excited. You can’t really tell from the photo below, but he’s jumping in it! Ha!
Mal and I finally put our gift card to the Outback to use and had a nice Sunday dinner out together.
Our meal started with brown bread with sweet butter, and as soon as our waitress served it to our table, I remembered how much I liked it. A zillion memories from high school also came rushing back. I remember eating a lot of this bread back then!
For my entrée, I ordered the California Chicken Salad, which came with mixed greens, slices of Granny Smith apple, walnuts, crumbled feta, and grilled chicken. I ordered the dressing on the side because I figured if I didn’t, the salad would be drenched in it. I hate how restaurants do that.
My salad tasted okay, but for the price ($13.99), it totally wasn’t worth it. I mean, imagine what you could get from the Whole Foods salad bar for that amount—or even what you could buy and make at home. Oh, well. It was still fun to go out and not have to cook anything!
After dinner, I satisfied my sweet tooth with a couple of handfuls of peanut M & Ms.
A few hours later, my stomach started to grumble, so I snacked on some Greek yogurt with homemade granola. Apparently, my California Chicken Salad didn’t do the trick!
The evening ended with Mal and I watching a few episodes of Friday Night Lights and then heading to bed fairly early. It was a nice Sunday night.
Back to the grind!

I have never been to Outback but I do love another part of that chain, Bonefish Grill. Oh my goodness their scallops are fantastic. Regardless of the food, it is always nice to get out for a relaxing sunday night with a very special person
@CJ @ http://healthy-happy-whole.com: OMG I could just live inside Bonefish Grill.
I love that you compared the $13.99 salad to the bar at Whole Foods – now I know I’m not the only one!! (To be honest, I’d kind of rather go to WF instead of the Outback, even though the atmosphere isn’t quite the same.) I’m glad you guys still had a fun night!
I looove that butter! I haven’t been to Outback in a while — I rarely go there actually, but it’s worth a trip just for that bread & butter!
I love Mal’s face in that picture….that is exactly how my husband gets the few times we go to Outback!
13.99 for that salad?? I do the SAME thing you do and think about how I could make it much bigger and much cheaper at home.
Glad you two had a fun night out!
Bummer about your dinner! WHen we go to Outback (maybe once every 6 months or so, if that) I always order the kids meal. It is super cheap and you can get a mini version of steak or chicken on the barbie with an additional side item. With the bread it is the perfect meal. You should give it another try!
I haven’t been to Outback in forever but I do remember their bread being delicious!
The bread from Outback is the best! It’s worth a trip to the restaurant alone!
I have only been to Outback a few times and the only reason I would want to go there again is for their brown bread!
I don’t even know what you call that type of bread, but I love love love it.
Sometimes restaurants just have those salads that remind you to get something more special next time! That’s why I usually get something I know will be good (steak, etc.) and have salad on the side! I love bread + butter at restaurants though – at least you got that!
If you’re making an effort to go to a steakhouse, why not order something they are known for?not surprised the salad sucked.
@Eleonora: I was in the mood for a salad. If I was in the mood for something else, I would have ordered it.
Meow!
I love their bread soooo much but thankfully I haven’t been there in years because it’s one of those things you can’t just have one piece of and let’s just says after finding out the content, I can only “afford” it on high cal days. $14 for a salad eh? Yeah…no. But since you weren’t paying for it, it makes it taste that much better!
Mmm, peanut m&m’s.
Must eat breakfast.
i’ve never been to outback… we always go to texas roadhouse if we’re wanting a steakhouse because that’s my husband’s favorite. i’m wanting to try outback some time though just to see what it’s like. that’s a bummer your salad wasn’t anything to rave about! but like you said, it’s nice to not have to cook and still enjoy a nice dinner sometimes. and great choice on the peanut m&ms… those are my favorite kind!
I’ve actually never been to an Outback! And peanut M&Ms are by far my favorite type
We used to have an Outback in town, and it was really good, but they closed down.
Hurray for date night. Those are always fun!
I’ve been meaning to watch Friday Light Nights for a few months now! It’s all on Netflix Instant, but I seem to get sidetracked by other shows. We used to have an Outback in my hometown, but I think it closed down. I’d heard good things about it, though!
I get that cost-guilt too when I go out to eat- when I order an $8 glass of wine that annoying voice in the back of my head saying “you could have bought 2 BOTTLES of 2buck chuck for the cost of that one glass”
That salad does look wimpy! I’ve only been to Outback once in my life, but I still remember that bread. Mmmm.
I hate restaurant meals don’t live up to the price- the bread looks great though!
I’ve been to Outback a couple of times. More recently, was a few months ago. I ordered a grilled chicken salad and the chicken came out completely RAW! I’m so glad that I looked at the chicken before I ate it because I would have been very very sick. Needless to say, I will not be going there anytime soon.
The bread at Outback is delicious! When I was younger I would call it chocolate bread. Sorry your salad was disappointing but glad yall enjoyed the night out!
Did Mal get a steak there? I’ve been curious as to how their steaks are and if they’re any good. Would love his feedback!
@Laura: He liked it, but he wasn’t impressed.
I’m not a huge fan of the Outback either, but I am a huge fan of date nights!
That salad looks a bit bare. And for $13.99? I can see why you were disappointed. The last time I went, I had the spinach, artichoke and chicken flatbread and it was delicious. And their bread is so good.
@Alaina: I almost ordered that! It sounded really good!
@Tina: husband & i had an outback gift card and went there for date night recently as well! we split that flatbread it was surprisingly ridiculously good! SO thin and crispy! We also split the filet sandwich on rosemary foccacia- it’s SUPER rich but perfect if you split- i highly recommend that sandwich!
Yeah its always risky to order a salad from a steakhouse.
Hi Tina! I found this website today and immediately thought of you! It’s like an enclycopedia of WODs. I love that there’s a bodyweight category for when I’m at home!

@Kelsey: Nice! Thank you!
man, when I go to the outback I get steak!! and sweet potato fries! I rarely eat steak…but I make a point to get that when eating at the outback.
That brown bread = CRACK!
