Human Breakfast

January 20, 2010

Good morning!

Murphy wanted me to share his dog breakfast on the blog this morning. Looks delicious, doesn’t it? ;-)

(Yes, my dog eats off of a plate… and a Christmas placemat.)

For breakfast, Murphy ate 1 cup of Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul (puppy variety) and a bowl of water from the kitchen sink. Best breakfast ever! He scarfs it down every morning!

Ok, time for the human breakfast!

Good morning, Mal!

IMG_3501.JPG

(Poor Mal. He’s such a good sport about me subjecting him to early-morning blog photos.)

For breakfast this morning, I made Mal and me a big batch of apple-cinnamon-raisin-brown sugar oatmeal to share.

IMG_3496.JPG

In the mix:

  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 cup vanilla soy milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 apple, diced
  • 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Raisins
  • Cinnamon

The key to apples in oatmeal is cooking them before you add the oats. I cut up the apples, add them to the pot along with some water/milk, and then sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar on top. I let them cook for about 3-5 minutes before adding the oats, water, soy milk, raisins, etc. The apples come out soft and sweet!

I also had a glass of iced coffee with breakfast.

I like honey mustard – though others have come up with some good ones – balsamic, greek yogurt, and hummus especially – not sure those quite count, but they are yummy.
I love my apple oatmeal – it makes it so much more filling.

Favorite condiments: BBQ sauce and honey. Not together, obviously. Both versatile and good on may things!

Is peanut butter a condiment? Then that’s my fave!

I love spicy mayo (like in spicy sushi rolls) but I make my own “healthy” version. I mix a few tablespoons of mayonnaise made with canola or olive oil (tastes like regular mayo but like, 1/3 of the fat and calories) and then i mix in hot sauce and some cayenne pepper. I can’t say it’s exactly how they make it at the sushi place, but I find it even more delicious! It’s great on sandwiches, etc.

Thanks for the tip on apples in oatmeal! When I make oatmeal with apples I guess I don’t cook it right, because the apples are always too crunchy!

Ketchup! I’m obsessed. I literally used to put it on every meat I ate as a child. My father would cringe as I doused my filet mignon in a ketchup and slapped it on some wild salmon. Eww I know. But I loved it and still love – just not to that crazy extent anymore.
