Return of Wheat Berries

November 23, 2009

There was a return of wheat berries in my breakfast this morning! :-D I used to eat them all of the time, especially mixed into my oats, but I let them go by the wayside recently.

Yesterday afternoon, I made a big batch of wheat berries, so my supply should last for most of the week. I’m so glad they’re back!

If you’re wondering what wheat berries are all about or how to cook them, check out my post from January.

In the mix:

  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1/3 cup wheat berries
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed meal
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 2 spoonfuls of peanut butter

There’s likely a glass of iced coffee in my future this morning too. I just wasn’t in the mood for it when I was making my oats. But, now I’m feelin’ an iced coffee craving coming on! ;-)

I have never had wheat berries! I need to try. Congrats on the Health cameo. :)

I’ve tried almond & cashew butter, oatmeal not from a packet, tofu, various kashi products, and homemade pizza dough. That’s all I can think of at the moment, but I’m sure there’s more.

I just got into reading food and healthy eating blogs. So I haven’t had a chance to try anything super new just yet. However I subscribed to hungry girl’s enewletter and I have tried pb2, vitatops, pizza fit n’ free, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, Almond breeze milk, etc

Kara November 23, 2009 at 9:14 am

I got into trying all different types of nut butters from reading the blogs! I’ve become a lot more experimental in general!

I tried Wheat Berries and Kabocha thanks go food blogs! Wheat berries specifically because of your blog, and they’re great!

Malin November 23, 2009 at 9:16 am

I tried peanut butter in my oats because of you, and now I don’t eat oats any other way! Love it! :)

Almond butter, wheat berries, PUMPKIN, coconut, and many other foods I’m sure. It’s definitely broadened my tastebud horizons. ;)

I am totally going to try not to over or under indulge at thanksgiving this year. Def one of my short term goals. I want to be happy with what I am eating and be able to say Thanksgiving was successful.

your breakfast looks delicious!!!

I discovered the fabulousness of almond butter, pumpkin butter, tried more soy products like the silken tofu (made that vanilla cake). Also, I’ve gotten more adventurous in my food combinations.

Sarah November 23, 2009 at 9:31 am

Because of food blogs my oatmeal has gotten more creative :) But I’ve also tried spaghetti squash, green monsters, Larabars and a ton of other foods because of blogs. Now I want to go get some wheatberries, ha ha!

I agree with the tight jeans tip! And not just for dining out but for at home too… Eating dinner whle wearing sweatpants may be comfy but it’s easier to overeat without even knowing than if you were wearing ‘real’ clothes :-)

I’ve still never made wheat berries myself! I’m going to have try that out soon! Your breakfast looks great!

SweetiePotato November 23, 2009 at 9:41 am

Oh gosh, I’ve tried tons of new stuff because of others’ blogs! Before reading, I never had oatmeal with anything other than oats in it! And I’ve also started to make more stuff, like the pizza dough from scratch I made last night and I’ve made a vegetarian burger! It’s so fun to try new stuff in the kitchen!

Jessie November 23, 2009 at 9:46 am

I have never been a bog squash eater. But I have tried experimenting with butternut and acorn squash that I had never eaten or cooked with before.

Congrats on your feature Tina. That’s a great tip. I used to wear babydoll types of tops or what I would refer to as my “eatin’ clothes”, I’ve since stopped because it’s just not a healthy mindset to go out planning to overeat. Enjoy your Monday!

I’d say the majority of food I now eat is due to the blogs – tofu, oats, sushi, Clif bars, Greek yogurt, the list goes on! Bloggers have the best tastes :)

Wow…I don’t even know how many new foods I’ve had because of blogs. I got really into oatmeal, sweet potatoes, squash (all things I’ve had but never been obsessed with ;) ) Greek yogurt is probably the biggest one!

Food blogs have really changed my eating habits for the better.

Mmmmm…wheatberries. Love that chew. I have a bag of them in my pantry that I keep forgetting about. I need to put them to use!

Congrats on the appearance in Health, and that’s a great tip! I remember reading an article about Kate Gosselin where she talked about how she always wears a tight belt around her waist to ensure that she doesn’t overeat. I wouldn’t take advice from her in any other realm of life (haha), but she does look awfully good for having had 8 kids!

I tried spaghetti squash, thanks to you!! http://drandmrs.blogspot.com/2009/11/spaghetti-squash-success.html

Now I just need to figure out ways to eat it other than like pasta…

Wheatberries are so yummy, but they take so dang long to cook! :) My hubby always asks for them…kinda funny I know. ;)
What new food have I tried…well Kabocha squash! Had to go to TN to get one, but it was delish! Miso…which I also love! And I’m daily inspired to try new things with the foods we always eat which keeps things super exciting. For example, I made your banana cookies last night with a handful of p.b. chips and dark chocolate chips! Yum!

I embarassed to admit this, but real maple syrup. My hubby is a big fan of the cheap, “Mrs. Butterworth” style stuff. But I finally broke down and got some of the real stuff. There is no going back now!!

Oh god, what haven’t I tried due to food blogs is the question! I would say Kombucha!

It’s been ages since I last had wheat berries… I gotta make a batch sometime soon! The little chewy gems are one food that I found out about through the blogosphere, as are kale chips and the “oats-in-a-jar” method. I love the food blog world!

There are so many foods I have tried since starting to read food blogs! Tofu, almond milk. soymilk, wheatberries, oat bran, polenta, kale, spinach (in smoothies), spaghetti squash, kiwi (with the skin on), and almond butter are just a few of the things I’ve tried. All good things, too! :)
