No Longer Intimidating: Stove Top Oats

February 16, 2009

Not that I have been avoiding stove top oats, I’ve just been rather intimidated by them. I’ve read all of the wonderful and amazing things about stove top oats on the blogs, but for some reason, I was worried that I would screw them up somehow– like burning them, making a total mess, ruining my saucepan, etc. As you know, I use the microwavable method to make my morning oats– mostly because it’s fast, easy, and fool-proof. Basically, it’s really tough to mess up oats in the microwave! So, when it came to stove top oats, I had all sorts of concerns about making them!

I have today off from work, so I decided to buck-up and give the stove-top method a try. Having some extra time this morning allowed me to “experiment” as well as prepare for and react to anything that went terribly wrong!

Verdict: Stove-top oats are EASY to make and taste INCREDIBLE! I can’t believe that I have been missing out on such a good thing for so long now!

How To:

  • Add 1 cup of water (or milk) to a saucepan and bring to a boil
  • Once water boils, reduce heat to medium and add 1/2 cup old-fashion oats
  • While oats are cooking, add in your fruit, nuts, wheat berries, etc., and continue to stir oats. (I added sliced banana today.)
  • My oats took about 5 minutes on medium heat to fully absorb the liquid.
  • Once oats have reached your desired consistency, transfer oats to a bowl and allow to cool for a couple of minutes. (During this time, I cleaned my saucepan.)
  • Finally, add whatever toppings that you like to your oats. (Today, I added peanut butter Puffins and a scoop of chunky peanut butter.)

Stove top oats are incredibly creamy! I’d even describe them as light and fluffy compared to microwavable oats. And, stove top oats are SO filling! The whipped-up goodness adds tons of extra volume– even more so than the microwavable version. My stomach is pleasantly full and satisfied now! ;-)

Stove top oats with iced coffee made with chocolate soy milk and agave nectar…

So, guys, my first experience with stove top oats was much better than expected! Now, I am a huge fan of this style of oats!! :-D

To be honest, however, during the work week, I will likely stick with the microwavable option out of pure convenience. Of course, if I have a few extra minutes in the morning, I will definitely make stove top oats! They’re SO GOOD and totally worth the effort!

Hoooray for yummy oats.

I have found that soaking them in the fridge overnight it whatever the cooking liquid is and them microwaving them in the am makes them like they were cooked on the stove. Sorry for the run on sentance :/

Kelly P February 16, 2009 at 10:19 am

I always cook my oats on the stovetop, worth the effort!

Sarah (Tales of Expansion) February 16, 2009 at 10:25 am

haha, i can’t believe you hadn’t done this before … congratulations on the success!!

Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) February 16, 2009 at 10:29 am

Yumm!! I like em either way but it’s nice to switch it up =)

Kate February 16, 2009 at 10:37 am

I ALWAYS put pb puffins on top of my oats!! They just add that perfect amt of crunch and more nuttiness:P

Danielle February 16, 2009 at 10:37 am

I love stovetop oats, definitely worth the little extra time, and good for you cleaning the pot right away that’s some discipline I don’t have haha.

Anna February 16, 2009 at 10:39 am

I’m glad you took the leap! You’re right, they are SO much more voluminous, filling, and creamy. If you don’t always have time in the AM to make them, try this method that I use for days when I have class/not a lot of time:

1. At night, make a big batch of oats on the stovetop (double, triple, etc- enough for as many days as you would like)
2. Let it cool a bit, then pour into tupperware containers and stick em in the fridge
3. In the AM, scoop out as much as you want, add some more liquid (a couple TBSPs, maybe 1/4 cup?) and mash it around with a fork to mix
4. Microwave for a minute or two, stirring halfway through cooking time

And voila! The creaminess and volume of stovetop oats, but with the speed and convenience of the micro!

LOVE stove top oats. They taste so much better than overnight oats (but those are still good too!)

Meg February 16, 2009 at 10:50 am

Great idea to add the Puffins!!! What a great texture combo!

Allison K. February 16, 2009 at 10:51 am

I’ve always been sort of intimidated by them as well! I love my microwaved oats during the work week…but I’ll have to try them on the stove top!

Chau February 16, 2009 at 10:55 am

I give myself 1 hour in the morning to do breakfast, shower, get ready for work. I like the extra time to spend and read blogs before I go off but stove top oats? Ive always been a microwaveable girl. I only do stove top oats when I do steel cut oatmeals and well, that’s only for the weekends :) And I tend to forget to turn off the stove so no go, but glad youre trying out a new method of preparing oats :P OATS FTW!!!

Meredith (Pursuing Balance) February 16, 2009 at 11:00 am

I’m sure the stovetop oats are amazing! Like you though, I stick to the microwave method out of convenience and not having to clean a saucepan afterwards!

Sammy February 16, 2009 at 11:07 am

Stoevtop oats are so much better.I recommend just letting your pot soak with water/soap and later it is soooomuch easier to clean than doing it right away.
Lately I have net more and more people that don’t own a microwave on purpose, thye have read things that they really aren’t good for you.I am thinking I would miss one,but also wonder about the long term health effects.
Am thinking of scrapping it.My friend says it doesn’t take that long to get used to living without. Will be tough at first!
But I have def given up microwaving oats that’s for sure :)

Shelby February 16, 2009 at 11:15 am

I do love stovetop oats but I go back and forth between stove and micro. I’m not sure which one I like best! The micro ones get so chewy and thick while the stovetop ones get so creamy and volumized. It’s a dilemma…but I don’t mind eating both (maybe in the same day ;)

Enjoy your day off!

VeggieGirl February 16, 2009 at 11:20 am

PB PUFFINS!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D

Diana (Soap & Chocolate) February 16, 2009 at 11:23 am

Oh I’m ALL about stovetop! My roomate microwaves and it always overflows and looks bad, but I feel like it doesn’t take much longer on the stove and it always comes out gorgeous! Glad you’ve overcome your fear. :)

carolinebee February 16, 2009 at 11:23 am

I love the simple combo! It’s funny, I’m more scared of micro oats b/c of the overflow danger! But of course they do entail less clean up, ah choices!

Lori February 16, 2009 at 11:28 am

Congrats! Stove top oats are wonderful, and they really don’t take that long!

Jaime February 16, 2009 at 11:29 am

Ha! I know what you mean. I put off making oatmeal forever…if I ever ate it, it was the instant packets. Then one weekend I decided to give the stovetop version a go, and now I can never go back. Those leftover packets are going into the camping food for this Summer.

I use the overripe frozen bananas from my freezer. I chop one in half, throw in the microwave for 15 seconds, then squeeze it into the oats while they cook. yummmmmm!

Kailey (SnackFace) February 16, 2009 at 11:55 am

Thanks for sharing your prior fears about stovetop oats! I have yet to try them for the exact same reasons. I loved the play-by-play directions; that’s exactly what I need. I must try it now!

Mara @ What's For Dinner? February 16, 2009 at 11:56 am

You know what you gotta try now? Stovetop oats with a beaten egg stirred in… YUM! It’s like custard!

K February 16, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Oh they do look extra creamy! Congrats on conquering the stove :)

Pearl February 16, 2009 at 12:18 pm

my brother will make a huge batch of stovetop oats and then store them in the fridge for the upcoming week. then he’ll add in some milk + microwave them when he wants them at breakfast.

joyful February 16, 2009 at 1:12 pm

So glad you were able to make that leap and try them on the stovetop! I love them so much more that way.

Sarah (lovINmytummy) February 16, 2009 at 1:25 pm

Once you go stovetop, you never go back. Last time I made microwave oats I threw ‘em away.

Kara February 16, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Yay! Once I got the hang of stovetop, I started waking up earlier in the morning just so I could make them :)

Lauren February 16, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Yay for stovetop oats!

Elizabeth (thelongweigh) February 16, 2009 at 1:59 pm

I just started making stovetop oats too. I am in love! The only other oats I was eating were instant and I was scared to make the transition. I am so glad I did!

Rose February 16, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Glad you had such a good experience with stovetop oats! I make ‘em every morning, and I’d say it only adds maybe 2-3 minutes onto my routine. Well worth it though, that’s for sure!

Enjoy your day off!

Lee (seelivelee) February 16, 2009 at 2:36 pm

I am glad you liked that method– i would have to agree that the “everyday” thing will have to be more…lets say..quick!!
have you tried overnight oats? YOU MUST!

Kath February 16, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Yaayyyyyyyy!!!! But Tina, you should try the slow cook method, which is putting everything in the pot, setting the heat to medium and just walking away. It’s very hands-off and I think the slow cooking makes them even more creamy :)

Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) February 16, 2009 at 3:19 pm

You’ve inspired me to make this for breakfast tomorrow! I just need to buy a banana and some peanut butter puffins. :)

Jenn (eating bender) February 16, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Aw yay! I’m so glad that you enjoyed your first stove top oats experience :) It is definitely my favorite way to eat oatmeal! But hey, something that might save a little time is that I put the oats in with the water/milk mixture right away. That way, it all heats up together and takes about 6-8 minutes total!

I can’t wait to read about the blogger dinner!

Becca A February 16, 2009 at 5:32 pm

I love stovetop oats when I have the time…but then I usually make eggs or something like that. Overnight soaking does give a similar feel to them though.

Bev February 16, 2009 at 8:24 pm

I agree with Kath . The slow cooking method is the best way ;)

Sweetie Pie February 16, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Love Puffins!!! I’m a big fan of the cinnamon ones. Those oats looks awesome!

bobbi February 16, 2009 at 8:50 pm

they are soooo much better, I was a quick converter once I tred them once!

Maggie February 16, 2009 at 11:51 pm

I hadn’t realized you’d been microwaving! Stove top is SOOOO good.

Caroline February 17, 2009 at 12:30 am

Once you’ve tried stovetop oats, you’ll never go back to the microwave again. Super yum.

Charlie September 15, 2009 at 5:51 am

I have already seen it somethere…
