Sunday in Newport

October 6, 2008

Even though it rained all day, I enjoyed a lovely Sunday in Newport. Our morning started with brunch at the Ocean Breeze Cafe, which is a cute restaurant on Thames Street with the most delicious and creative-flavored muffins ever! I look forward to these babies all year long! :)

Some of yesterday’s muffin selections included: pumpkin chocolate chip, almond joy (coconut, chocolate, and almond), cranberry-orange, pistachio, banana chocolate chip, peach cobbler, cappuccino, carrot raisin, lemon poppyseed, and many others.

For brunch, I ordered a fruit cup with strawberries, blueberries, cantaloup, and kiwi! I hadn’t eaten fruit that fresh in weeks! It was awesome! :)

After much debate over the various muffin flavors, I finally decided on the pumpkin chocolate chip muffin, which was scrumptious, especially after being heated and lightly grilled. Pumpkin + chocolate = true love!

My beverage selection was a banana hazelnut iced coffee with light cream. I wasn’t sure what to expect with banana iced coffee, but the flavor was very subtle, but sweet when mixed with the hazelnut.

It was still raining after we finished eating brunch, so we visited the (indoor) International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. The museum was very impressive! It had a ton of tennis memorabilia– some of which dated back to the mid-1800′s. The museum also had a “real live” Olympic gold medal, which was the first I had ever seen in person. Very cool.

After touring the museum and walking around Newport for a little while, Mal and I said goodbye to Josh and Danielle and headed back to the condo. It was mid-afternoon by then and we were hungry, so we snacked on some sesame Gruyere Cheese Crisps. Love these!!!

Mal’s parents arrived in Newport mid-afternoon on Sunday. (They are staying all week in Newport.) Since Mal and his parents are huge fans of the Patriots, we walked down to the Mudville Pub to watch the game and get a bite to eat.

For the table, we split an appetizer sampler that included veggie potstickers, buffalo wings, and nachos. My first plate had 2 wings and a potsticker.

My second plate was another buffalo wing and a bunch of cheesy nachos. I also had another small portion of nachos (about the same size as the plate below), which is not pictured.

After the football game, we walked home to enjoy a relaxing evening at home with Mal’s parents. I thought about having a glass of wine in front of the nice, warm fire, but I wasn’t in the mood for alcohol. (Mainly because I overdid it on Saturday night!) Instead, I made myself an OJ and soda water “mocktail” (half OJ, half soda water + ice).

I ate both of my meals so late in the day that I wasn’t hungry for dinner at all. However, a piece of pumpkin cake was a different story! I enjoyed a lovely, moist piece of cake while sitting in my PJs in front of the fire. It was total and utter relaxation! :)

I have a million and one things to do before I go to HW tonight for my shift, so I leave you with a photo of “Dumb and Dumber.” (My sis said it was okay to put this pic on the blog!) It’s such a funny photo– I just had to share it! :)

What a GREAT weekend in Newport!!!!! Back to the grind!

I’m so jealous of your breakfast– the muffin seems to die for, and the banana hazlenut coffee sounds incredible. Paired with fresh fruit, how could you go wrong? And that pumpkin cake…wow. Lucky girl!

How exciting, you wrote about my uncles (John Macy) cheese crisps. He started making the cheese sticks in college while he was at BU so I guess you could say they are originally from boston. I will have to tell John you blogged about them.

I can’t get over the frosting on that pumpkin cake. It’s like an inch thick. I love that. Your breakfast looks WONDERFUL.

Hi Tina,
I love your blog but never comment! I’m from Boston but live in Ireland so it’s nice to get to see your pictures and day to day things from my hometown. I loved the Neport post as well, after college I lived there for the summer and went to Ocean Breeze daily. I was back this past summer and though still delicious the breakfast size of the omlette/main courses was shockingly huge! I think you chose well, will have to go with the muffin and fruit next trip! Best of luck with the new career venture.
