When I was sick with a colitis flare a few weeks ago, an unexpected package arrived in the mail for me: a box of goodies from Sephora. I love Sephora, but I didn’t remember ordering anything recently, so who the heck sent it to me?

IMG_1804 (900x675)

It turns out that three of my favorite blog buddies sent me a care package to cheer me up. What a nice surprise!

IMG_1807 (900x675)

Of course, these lovely ladies didn’t need to send me anything at all to let me know that they cared (all three of them were checking in on me almost daily via text, Twitter, and gchat), but they wanted to do something special for me during a really crappy (haha) time in my life. As I stood there with my Sephora care package, I couldn’t help but think: blog friends rule.

In the days that followed, I felt really inspired by the blog world. There really is SO MUCH good that comes from blogging (friends, in particular, come to mind!), so I thought it would be neat to combine forces with some of my blogger buddies to create one big, warm and fuzzy post about why blog friends rule. Check out what they had to say!

Why blog friends rule”¦

Brittany – Eating Bird Food

Blog friends rule for many reasons, but one that stands out to me is the fact that they think about food and fitness just as much as I do – making me seem less like an odd ball.

HLS2011 (480x320)

Anne – Fannetastic Food

Because they are on board for running 6 miles at the crack of dawn… and then spending the rest of the day drinking wine. Now that’s balance.

IMG_1152 (900x704)

Roni – Roni’s Weigh

Blog friends rule because….

who else would have their picture taken with you and a McDonald’s bag on their head?

Roni_Aj (400x300)

OR in a cramped hotel gym with horrible lighting?

Roni_MizFit (500x375)

OR on sweaty on a run through central park?

Roni_jess_tina (320x480)

In all seriousness, blog friends rule because they “get you” like no one else. I’m not sure how other bloggers feel but my “blog friends” don’t require a prefix. They are simply “friends.”

Courtney – Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life

Blog friends rule because they’re often the only ones that understand your dire need for oats in a jar, green smoothies, and anything else that would otherwise probably be considered “questionable.”

Mara – What’s for Dinner?

I had no idea what I was getting into when I entered the food blog world. I knew I’d find some great new reading material, some great recipes, and maybe get to “know” some other bloggers. Little did I know that some of my blog friends would become some of my best friends. When my dad passed away last year, friends I didn’t even know I had came out of the woodwork to let me know they were here for me. I’ve traveled across the country and had friends to spend time with everywhere I’ve gone. I consider myself lucky to be part of such a warm and caring community!

Ashley – A Healthier Happier Bear

Blog buddies will help you finish a tough marathon when you didn’t think it was possible!

Matt – No Meat Athlete

What I love about blog friendships is how meaningful they become in just a very short time, since they’re based not on proximity, but on personality.

Online friendships form because, for some reason or another, you have attracted each other — this is very different from being friends with someone just because you happen to live in the same geographical place. You have so much in common with your blog friends just by the very fact that you’re all motivated and driven enough to start a blog and keep it going!

The coolest part of this, I think, is that when you do finally meet blog friends in person, it feels like you’ve known each other all your life! The time you’ve spent together hasn’t been just idle chit-chat or “nice weather today, huh?”, as tends to happen with co-workers and in other relationships that are bound by geography. Instead, these friendships are based on the very meaningful things that you find important enough to share on your blogs. That’s why blog friends rule!

Leslie – And Her Little Dog Too

Blog friends rule because:

They know how to have a good time.

2012-03-21_0832

Photo ops while running are pretty standard.

2012-03-21_0833

We love to take pictures of each other taking pictures.

2012-03-21_0833_001

We travel near and far to hang out.

Gina – Skinnytaste

Print

Monica – Run, Eat, Repeat

Blends have proved to me that you can meet real, life-long friends on the internet (not just random guys who say they’re looking for a relationship but really just want to get laid. Never mind).

Blogging is a really weird job. I love that I can g-chat my blog friends during the day just like co-workers. They’ve taught me so much!

Blog friends rock because they don’t care that you…

  • Eat green smoothies
  • Take your laptop EVERYWHERE
  • Ask them to take pictures of you pretending to eat a giant pizza sculpture
  • Tweet them instead of calling
  • Live across the county, because you still see them 5 times a year at conferences.

Julie – Savvy Eats

I work from home, and I need someone to talk to and keep me on track throughout the day.  My best blog friends encourage me to slow down and just do one thing at a time when I’m feeling overwhelmed and stressed, and cheer me on when I’m “on a roll.” I  love my blog friends because they help keep me sane.

Evan – The Wannabe Chef

I love making blog friends who live in different parts of the country and being able to experience their town with them. When I ran my first marathon in DC, Sana showed me around, taught me how to use the Metro without getting lost, and gave me a tour of the city. When I ran with my 2nd marathon I stayed with Madeline who showed me her town, Philadelphia, and since we both raced on the same day we were able to encourage each other to hit our goals and offer support. I love feeling like I have friends all over the country and even beyond and it makes me want to see more places.

Gina – The Fitnessista

Blog friends are spread out all over the country, so wherever you go, you’ll be able to meet up with someone who shares your interests. It’s also really been helpful for vacation planning- local blog friends know all the best spots!

bloggies (900x633)

Kath – Kath Eats Real Food

Blog friends rule because you can party all evening, get in bed at 9pm and then wake up at the crack of dawn to go for a run and drink vegetable juice and no one complains!

Blends-2Blog-2 (600x600)

Gretchen – Honey, I Shrunk the Gretchen

Unlike your non-blogging friends, who barely put up with your incessant blog talk, your blog friends will never roll their eyes when you start talking about analytics, or when you bust out your camera at dinner. They simply understand.

HLS_Blog_Friends (640x427)

Lynn – The Actor’s Diet

Heather – Then Heather Said

I was living over 1700 miles away from my family, not knowing a soul and learning how to stand on my own two feet after a break up when I first started to see the beauty of blogging friendships.  Through the blog community, I met people online who had similar interests and personalities, who encouraged me as I set and reach goals.  After experiencing this long distance, I decided to reach out to local healthy living bloggers to see about meeting up.

2012-03-21_0839

Almost three years later, I now have a great group of local friends who have similar interests, understand blog-talk, and are also SO MUCH FUN.  We get together for girls night dinners out, bring-the-SO pot lucks in, game nights, concerts, cookie swaps, and so much more. We even hit the road together, road tripping to races, conferences and even grocery shopping excursions together.  Somewhere along the way my blog friends became friends- and good friends!  BLOG FRIENDS ROCK!

MizFit

I call my blog friends Strangerfriends.  They are people I rely on & lean on daily (they get me!) & yet I might not recognize them if I passed them on the street.  They’re my strangerfriends and I can’t imagine life without them.

Julie – Peanut Butter Fingers

Blog friends are great because most of my “real life” friends aren’t on Twitter and I need someone to talk to when I’m tweeting about really important things like the guy “walking” his dog outside of my window while driving a golf cart. (Seriously.)

bloggers_in_savannah (800x550)

Janetha – Meals & Moves

Blog friends rule because they will lend a helping hand so you can still drink beer when your hands are full of food (and more beer…)

janetha_and_holly (640x480)

Blog friends rule because they will band together to raise nearly $30,000 for a fellow blogger with cancer.

auction_results (556x388)

SkinnyRunner

Blog friends rule because they make some of the best running and racing partners.  And all the weird things you do as a blogger?  They do it too!

Running an entire marathon with camera in hand taking blog pictures?  Just another day for  running blogger.

Spending way too much time making a costume by hand just to run and sweat in it?  Totally normal when you have a running buddy doing the same thing.

2012-03-21_0828

Eating cupcakes with new friends (ie strangers) right after running the largest marathon in the world?  A post-race must if you’re with HungryRunnerGirl.

2012-03-21_0840

But the really great thing about blog friends that run is that they continue to motivate and inspire me through their commitment to fitness and health, and everyone no matter who you are, needs motivation from time to time.

Kelly – Brownies and Zucchini

I love blog friends because 1) travelling around the country is much more fun when you know people in other parts of the US 2) Even if you don’t see them in person more than once a year, you can keep up with their lives through their blog and Twitter, and bounce right back when you see them again in person 3) They don’t think it is weird that you take photos all the time, including multiple photos of your food. Just three of the 205835 reasons why I love my blog friends!

wisconsinblends (500x375)

Meghann – Meals and Miles

Two years ago I met Ashley (Healthy Happier Bear) at a race in New York City. I had planned to run the race with a few local bloggers and she was the first one who introduced herself as we waited by the corrals. She was so sweet and outgoing that it was instant friendship. We ended up running the race together (along with our friend Dori!) and chatted the entire time. We kept in touch and gradually over the course of two years Ashley went from being my ‘blog friend’ to a bridesmaid in my upcoming wedding. We’ve shared secrets, vacationed together, visited one another in our home states, and have really just bonded as great friends. Without my blog I would never have met Ashley or known the truly wonderful person that she is. She is the kind of friend you can talk to about anything – she’ll always be there for you and tell you how it is. I’m thankful to have her in my life.

This is just one story of hundreds regarding the wonderful bloggers or readers I’ve met throughout my 4 years of blogging. I’ve never met a person that I didn’t like and some real friendships have been made in that time. Blogging is like online friendship dating – only better.

IMG_8506 (900x600)

Bridget – Yogurt and Berries

Blog friends rule because even though you might be at a blog-related event, you can talk about anything butblogging with them.  As much as I love talking about blogging, it’s nice not to feel like that’s the only thing you have in common with your blog friends.

IMG_0021_(800x600)[2] (640x480)

But on the other hand, when you’re hanging out with blog friends, it’s good to know you can stop for a photo shoot at any given time and it’s not only normal but it’s almost expected”¦

IMG_1502 (597x800)

But best of all (an I’m sure others will say this), is when your “blog friends” become just regular, old, FRIENDS!

Why do YOU think blog friends rule?

A BIG thanks to all of the bloggers who contributed to this post! You guys rule!

I especially feel closer with some of them than even my real friends because they really do know everything about you, how you feel, whats going on in life, etc. My family and local friends have finally figured out that if they want to keep up with me, they should just read my blog.
