Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

I didn’t need to travel very far last night. I met up with Theodora at The Long Room for a drink, and then I walked down the street to meet the PR folks from California Grapes for dinner. It was just a short 5 minute walk between the two!

At The Long Room, I enjoyed a Blue Pointe Toasted Lager””one of my favorite beers. Theordora and I chatted for about an hour before we both needed to head our separate ways. It was so great to see her! It had only been two months since we last got together, but it seemed like ages, so it was nice to spend some time together.

Theodora and I said goodbye, and then I headed to dinner at db Bistro Moderne, a modern French-American restaurant.

Dinner started with fresh bread and sweet butter as well as breadsticks and a couple of dips””one of which was olive tapenade.

For my entrée, I ordered the Wild Striped Bass, which came with parsnip puree, roasted figs (so, so, so good!), and Trumpet Royal mushrooms in a red wine butter. It was quite the mix of ingredients, and I absolutely loved it, especially the figs. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a plump, sweet figs in my whole life.

I also liked that this meal wasn’t super-sized. It ended up being just the right amount of food for me. I find that if I’m served a huge portion at a restaurant, I usually end up eating the majority of it and feeling stuffed afterward. This entrée was perfectly sized and filled me up without overdoing it.

We also shared an order of Brussels sprouts among the table.

As well as a dessert. We ordered the Chocolate Caramel Palet, which was rich and chocolaty, and the perfect way to end a meal. Surprisingly, I only needed a few bites to satisfy my sweet tooth.

I have a full agenda today! Breakfast first!

Question of the Day

Do you find that you often overeat at restaurants? Is it because of the huge portion sizes or just because the food is so darn delicious? Do you have any strategies to prevent you from overdoing it?

  1. If I am really hungry when I walk into a restaurant, I will overeat. But if I make sure to have a small snack a few hours prior so that I’m not famished when I go out to eat, I can usually convince myself to stop eating when I’m full and take the rest home as leftovers.

  2. I often overeat at restaurants. I think it is a combination of the delicious food and the huge portions. If I’m smart I will have half of it boxed up right away to make myself only eat the correct portion. You can’t do that when out of town though. Then I just try to be mindful of what I am ordering and how much is on my plate.

  3. I tend to eat more than I would at home because the food is usually completely different than what I make. I try and make similar things, but there’s just something better about food that’s made by someone else!

  4. I have that problem too. Its because the food is sitting there in front of me & so good. Would love any tips to avoid this problem. I feel like asking for half to be boxed right away makes me feel a little high maintenance.

  5. Yes! I eat it simply because it is in front of me. I wish restaurants like Cheesecake Factory would serve you half as much food and cut their prices too. I devised a strategy though this weekend that worked very well…I met a friend for dinner while we were both in Disney. She was on the Disney dining plan, I was not. We ordered a NY strip steak that was covered under her dining plan, which was more than enough for the two of us to share, and then I covered the sides (we just ate green veggies, no carbs). So we both had a good and (mostly) nutritious meal (we both try to eat red meat no more than once a week), and it was cost effective as well!

  6. Looks like you two had a great time.

Overeating at restaurants? I almost never go out to eat anymore so not an issue for me. It’s cheaper, easier, and better all around for us to just stay at home and eat with a small child so that’s what we do.

  7. Definitely! Portions are so big now that even if you eat maybe 3/4 of your meal, its still way to much. I always try to eat only half my plate or I ask someone if they would like to share a meal with me. It gets you from over-eating and is budget friendly 🙂

  8. yes, i totally overeat if the food is good and the portions are huge. I think there are exceptions, like cheesecake factory, simply cuz i know the food is so bad for you, and i look forward to the cheesecake. i usually try and do appetizer or dessert, not both. and i also try and limit myself to 1 drink which is usually the case. those are my only tips.

  9. Oh I’ve definitely overeaten at a restaurant before because the food is so gosh darn good! It doesn’t happen often but when it does I have to be rolled outta the place!

  10. I find at restaurants, I’m one of two extremes: being healthy and “good,” and maybe not getting what I really what, or treating it as a special occasion and totally going overboard. I need to find the happy medium! I find that if I can, looking ahead to see the menu online helps me better plan my meal into my day,

  11. The huge portion sizes are what kill me. I’ve always eaten what’s in front of me, even if its way too much. If I go somewhere where they serve small portions like Applebees (as in normal sized!) I can eat, enjoy my food, and be fine with having about 1/3 the food I’d get at say Claim Jumper.

For that reason I have been trying to avoid eating at places with huge oversized portions lately, if we go out at all.

  12. Oh I totally overeat at restaurants. Does not everybody? 🙂 The freshly made bread baskets kill me. I can eat the entire thing by myself before the first course comes. That’s why I limit my outtings to just one a week, usually on the nights after my long run, so at least I’ve earned some extra calories in the bank I can eat/drink.

  13. i only tend to over eat when there are a lot of appetizers…because normally i try to only eat half my entree to save the other half for lunch the next day 🙂 (and i always have to make sure i’m ready for dessert!)

  14. Yeah, I’ve fallen victim to the large portions at restaurants a time or two…or every time…whatever! I know that I should order the to-go box when they bring my meal, but I seldom do, and it is torture to only eat half of the meal! My boyfriend and I usually end up splitting an entree, so that usually solves the problem.

  15. Oh that place looks delicious! It doesn’t help that I’m hungry but those brussels sprouts…I think I want to eat my computer screen!

When I go out to eat I try to avoid overeating by ordering a salad or some type of veggies with my meal and make sure to get a glass of water with lemon to fill up on instead of sugary lemonade or soda. Typically I don’t do dessert unless I’m sharing it or a special occasion and I try to steer clear of the bread baskets.

If I’m with a friend, having a nice glass of vino and some good conversation is also a nice distraction 🙂

  16. Looks like a yummy dinner! I pretty much always overeat if the food is really good… I just can’t help it! Sometimes, though, the portion sizes are so big I think I don’t realize just how much I’ve eaten until it’s too late!

  17. I always overeat at restaurants too! I think I still have that “clean your plate” mentality that my parents instilled in me when I was a kid. 😛 Plus the food is always so delicious that I don’t want to stop! I try to stop myself from pigging out by telling myself that if I want to eat this food again, I can always come back in the future, so there’s no need to stuff myself as if it’s the last time I’m ever going to get to eat that meal. It’s been helping me control myself lately!

  18. I am the same way with eating until I’m stuffed at restaurants. I’ve heard of people asking for a box right away and automatically putting half of their meal into the box to take home. Seems like an excellent strategy; I just haven’t tried it yet. haha

  19. That dinner looks fabulous! I love that you order brussels sprouts. I totally would have done the same thing! I try not to overeat at restaurants. I’ve learned to slow down and realize that I can always ask for a box to bring it home. Leftovers are the best 🙂
