We’re Terrible Parents

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots β€˜N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Look at this sad pug face! Poor guy. πŸ˜•

I bet you’re wondering why Murphy looks like he’s about to cry– well, it’s because his (terrible) parents forgot his first birthday!! πŸ™

I knew Murphy’s birthday was close to mine, but, for some reason, I thought it was a few days after. Yesterday, when I went to double-check his actual birthday, I realized that it was last week! 😳 As soon as we realized our mistake,Β Mal and I wished Murph a happy birthday and gave him lots of hugs and kisses, but we still felt bad for missing it. Although, I’m pretty sure Murphy forgave us as soon as he got a few licks of special birthday peanut butter! πŸ˜‰

Mal is on summer vacation, so we started the day by taking a Body Pump class together. Before heading to the gym, I snacked on a banana and a Chobani Greek yogurt. I cannot exercise on an empty stomach. I feel like I have no energy if I don’t eat something.

As you know, I love Body Pump, but this morning’s class was just so-so. We tried the newest release, Body Pump 74, but I didn’t really enjoy it. A lot of the tracks are dull and sort of weird (both the music and routine).Β For instance, the song for the back track, No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” is remixed in a strange way, which makes the clean and presses totally awkward.Β Triceps (“3” by Britney Spears) andΒ biceps (“Boom Boom Pow” by Beat Factory) were the only tracks that I really liked on 74. They’re upbeat and fun.Β The shoulder track was insane– there’s a ton of quick transitions, which kept us moving non-stop. It was actually kind of fun trying to keep up. But, overall, I’m not a fan of 74. Maybe it’ll grow on me?

After Body Pump, Mal and I made a wonderful pancake breakfast. I followed myΒ A Really Good Pancake Recipe, but I used whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose, which made the pancakes really flat– not light and fluffy like previous batches. They tasted fine, but I prefer my pancakes to be cake-like.

On the side, I had a few slices of watermelon.

And, iced coffee with vanilla soy milk.

Stonyfield Barnstorming Tour

Don’t forget to send me your questions about organics! I leave for the Stonyfield Barnstorming Tour on Friday.

Trading Up Downtown

I did a huge grocery shopping this week! Check out what I bought:Β Shop, Trade Save: Week of June 20.

Question of the Day

What do you think about celebrating pet birthdays?

  1. aww.. Tell Murphy I said “Happy Belated birthday!’ We celebrated Maddie’s birthday this year with a visit to the dog park. πŸ™‚

  2. we totally do…bunker’s is the same day as our anniversary and keira’s is cinco de mayo. we try and do it up big for them, and they totally love it (even though they don’t really know what’s going on) πŸ™‚

  3. I buy my kitties a special treat or toy for their birthdays. My boy kitty was homeless and I rescued him so I kind of just made up his birthday. But Maya was born Memorial weekend.

  4. Aww the poor pup, I am sure you have more than made up for it. His birthday is Flag Day (so is my hubs) not like that helps remember anything, lol.

Glad you had a nice weekend and I am “pumped” to follow you on your trip to Stoneyfield. I would definitely like to hear more about why their products are so different from other organics on the market and how we the consumer can make sure we know what organic means:)

  5. The good thing about Les Mill’s classes is that if you’re not a fan they’ll soon change so it’s not the end of the world. Also, once the initial introduction is over the teacher can mix it up. πŸ™‚

  6. Buddy’s birthday is sometime in October…I’m doing well to remember friends’ birthdays, so I just stick with that! πŸ™‚

  7. I forgot my puggle’s birthday last month too! You’d think I would have it down, he’s 4 now, but I forget every year. I don’t think they really mind all that much though!

  8. Of course we celebrate! Harper’s October 12, and Monster’s a stray, but got him near Thanksgiving, so that works. But, like you, hugs and maybe an extra-treat kind of celebration.

  9. Murphy is adorable, even when sad! I may have just been wishful thinking but did you post a Magic Bullet giveaway last week? I was waiting for the winner announcement and I can’t find that post again. Now I feel like I maybe hallucinated the whole thing.

  10. We dont really celebrate our cats birthdays, mostly because its just an estimation and they were born sometime in June/July.

I’m curious as to what Mal does during the summer? Does he take on a part-time job? Just curious!

  11. Just commemorated the birthday and death of Kiwi (she died a day after her 11th birthday on June 20, 2008).

Chooey’s 2nd birthday is estimated by the shelter to be on August 4th πŸ™‚

    Happy belated birthday to Murphy!

  12. Pet birthdays are so fantastic! But don’t feel bad about forgetting…I was out of town for my dog’s 1st bday last summer and I’ll gone again this summer πŸ™ Pool parties are a good way to make up, you wouldn’t believe how much my weiner dog loves to swim!

  13. Awww, haha, poor Murphy! He’s so distraught he can’t even look at you! πŸ˜€

It’s actually my kitty’s birthday today, and I’m such a dork that I realized it when I was at the front door of my apartment building on my way to work, and I actually had to go back upstairs to the apartment to give her a hug and a kiss. Hey, she’s been in my life 9 years — the girl deserves her special day. πŸ™‚

  14. We don’t really celebrate our pet’s birthday, because we give them love, treats and lots of play time everyday. So, we basically celebrate having them in our lives everyday πŸ™‚

  15. We adopted ours from the SPCA, so we only know the month they were born. Besides, like I do with humans…I wish you happy birthday during the month of your birthday, since I am the worst at remembering dates! I am sure the peanut butter helped!

  16. I lvoe pet birthdays! In my extended family, we have even gone so far as to have all-out dog birthday PARTIES with dog cupcakes and games! My basset hound’s birthday is in July so we will definitely do something. I don’t know his real birthday because I adopted him from the pound but I made it on the day I got him. πŸ™‚

  17. Awww…I bet he forgave you pretty quickly. πŸ™‚ We don’t know when either of our pet’s birthdays were, because they were both rescue dogs (one straight from the streets!), but I totally support pet celebrations of any kind πŸ™‚

You’re going to have so much fun at the Barnstorming event! Can’t wait to read all about it.

  18. I still remember my dog’s birthday from when I was a child. I was so sad when he was hit by a car years ago.

Question : Have you ever tried half WW flour and half AP flour? I wonder if that would help with the texture while still getting the health benefits of the WW?

  19. We don’t know our pet’s birthday because they are rescues but we celebrate them with a special snack around the time we adopted them. We take them for a super long walk and just enjoy our time with them becuas ewe couldn’t imagine life without them.

  20. I don’t really like 74 either. I really don’t like the chest or squat tracks, but I do actually kind of like the back track. The lunge tracks kills me and makes me dread going to class, but I can already see some extra lift in my butt so I guess it’s working πŸ™‚

  21. For Lena’s 2nd birthday (she’s a black lab) I threw a puppy party. Invited her dad, mom, brothers, and aunt (all labs of course). I made a peanut butter carrot doggie cake and they all devoured it πŸ™‚

  22. I am so not a pet person, the only pets we had growing up were fish, budgies and a hamster (thank you kitty and doggie allergies). So personally I don’t get it. I also don’t get outfits and shoes/boots for your pets either lol.Seriously I saw a dog one winter wearing boots bahahaha

  23. I like to celebrate my dog (dachshund/pug mix) Darcy’s birthday, but not in an over the top freaky way! Last year for her first birthday I took her to the park for the day and gave her a special treat and a new toy. She had a great time and was wiped out by the end of the day!

  24. Happy Birthday Murphyyyyyyyyyy! He is such a cutie. I’m sure hes not mad. We haven’t launched 74 yet…but I’m not thrilled with the music yet either. It usually takes a couple times through to grow on me…so I’m keeping my fingers crossed πŸ™‚ Great looking pancakes. I’m still so sad I’m going to be missing you this weekend πŸ™

  25. Awww, I’m sure little Murphy has already forgiven you!! For Noodle’s Birthday she usually gets a new toy and a special treat πŸ™‚

As for your food, is there anything better than watermelon in the summer?! The answer is no! If you answered yes, it should only be with the response “yes, watermelon infused with alcohol!

  26. I loved the lunges track on 74 even though it kicked my butt! But I agree about the remix of Don’t Speak, it was weird and I didn’t care much for that track of exercises. I’m hoping it grows on me too, I think it will. Plus they told us the teachers can start adding their own modifications after three weeks. πŸ™‚

  27. if you want fluffy pancakes, i insist you try mark bittman’s recipe for light and fluffy pancakes (with ricotta!!). i just posted it on my blog and they are to die for……seriously you must make them at least once. you will fall in love, promise!!

i don’t have a pet, but if i did, i would definitely celebrate it’s birthday. it’d be a pure miracle that i made it a year with a pet, really. i’d be celebrating myself, too. πŸ™‚ happy monday!

  28. I buy my bichon Rusty a mini birthday cake from Kool Dog Kafe for his birthdays πŸ™‚ Happy Birthday Murphy!

  29. I celebrate my dogs bday every year. This Oct he will be 4 years old!! He is a Rottie but he is the biggest baby you will ever see, lol!!
