We’re Terrible Parents

Look at this sad pug face! Poor guy. 😕

I bet you’re wondering why Murphy looks like he’s about to cry– well, it’s because his (terrible) parents forgot his first birthday!! 🙁

I knew Murphy’s birthday was close to mine, but, for some reason, I thought it was a few days after. Yesterday, when I went to double-check his actual birthday, I realized that it was last week! 😳 As soon as we realized our mistake, Mal and I wished Murph a happy birthday and gave him lots of hugs and kisses, but we still felt bad for missing it. Although, I’m pretty sure Murphy forgave us as soon as he got a few licks of special birthday peanut butter! 😉

Snack

Mal is on summer vacation, so we started the day by taking a Body Pump class together. Before heading to the gym, I snacked on a banana and a Chobani Greek yogurt. I cannot exercise on an empty stomach. I feel like I have no energy if I don’t eat something.

Workout

As you know, I love Body Pump, but this morning’s class was just so-so. We tried the newest release, Body Pump 74, but I didn’t really enjoy it. A lot of the tracks are dull and sort of weird (both the music and routine). For instance, the song for the back track, No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” is remixed in a strange way, which makes the clean and presses totally awkward. Triceps (“3” by Britney Spears) and biceps (“Boom Boom Pow” by Beat Factory) were the only tracks that I really liked on 74. They’re upbeat and fun. The shoulder track was insane– there’s a ton of quick transitions, which kept us moving non-stop. It was actually kind of fun trying to keep up. But, overall, I’m not a fan of 74. Maybe it’ll grow on me?

Breakfast

After Body Pump, Mal and I made a wonderful pancake breakfast. I followed my A Really Good Pancake Recipe, but I used whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose, which made the pancakes really flat– not light and fluffy like previous batches. They tasted fine, but I prefer my pancakes to be cake-like.

On the side, I had a few slices of watermelon.

And, iced coffee with vanilla soy milk.

Question of the Day

What do you think about celebrating pet birthdays?

  1. Since both our dogs are rescues we don’t know their exact bday so celebrate in the middle of the month they were born. We just celebrated chase’s complete with a candle and a delicious treat and of course singing 😉 clearly I’m a fan of pets bdays!

  2. Oh no Happy Belated Birthday to Murphy! I think that pets don’t really know when it’s their birthday (of course!) but to make them part of the family I love celebrating their birthdays!

  3. Poor Murphy! I’m sure he didn’t mind once he got all the hugs and kisses though. 🙂 I celebrate all my pet’s birthdays..except we don’t know any of them for sure since most are strays so we go with my birthday or the day we got them. 😛 And they’ll get little extra treats

  4. We’ve never known any of our pets’ exact birthdays, because they’re usually rescue animals, but we’ve known the month for a few of them and always give them lots of love 🙂 I’m sure Murphy will forgive you- happy belated birthday to him!!

  5. Ooh, thanks for the heads up on BP release 74. I’m going to be trying it for the first time in an hour. Happy Birthday Murphy!

  6. Oh my poor dog!!! How could you forget his very first birthday!? Give Murphy a big hug and a kiss from Grandma.

  7. Totally into pet birthdays. Any excuse for a celebration. One kitty has his birthday on 5th August. The other we know was born in August but not sure which day, so we have a big party on the same day for both of them. We have games and a tuna fish “cake” with candles. Is that really sad??? 😉

  8. I agree – I’m not a fan of release 74 for body Pump either. I mean, it’s still a good workout but it just doesn’t flow very well for me.

We celebrated my dog’s first birthday with extra walks and extra treats. But this year I want to have her wear a birthday hat and make her a cake. My husband thinks that’s entering the “weird dog people” category. haha!

  9. Murphy seems like the understanding type; I don’t think he’ll hold it against you. I don’t have any pets right now, but when I did as a kid, we never celebrated birthdays, but that could be because we didn’t know when they were.
Bummer about Body Pump 74. Hopefully it’ll grow on you. That happens with Body Combat for me; I usually only like the new releases a little at first, but grow to love it. Does the back track have four in a row clean and presses again? I’m not a fan of that. I always feel like I’m going to hurt myself, especially when the music is fast.

  10. I don’t really “celebrate” my dogs birthday but I do usually try to be extra sweet and give him tons of attention because that’s what he really wants. He usually gets a special treat that day too. I think if I had kids they would find it fun to “throw a party” so maybe I’ll do that someday. I used to throw parties for my cabbage patch dolls so this seems less silly. 🙂

  11. Oh, poor Murphy! He does look sad. Peanut butter always seems to make things better for dogs though! I love celebrating my dog’s birthday – or any other important occasion with him. I celebrated his half birthday last year, and we had a small party for him last year for his first birthday. I plan to have another small party for his second birthday this year. I also celebrated our first year together by having a photo session with him, and I think I may do that every couple of years.

  12. We never have an excuse to forget my dog’s birthday – it’s the same as my mum’s birthday! Usually she’ll get a few treats and maybe a squeaky toy. The dog, that is, not my mum! 😀

  13. My husband and I totally celebrate our dog’s birthday. Our beagle is a rescue and we got him when he was 9 months old. His birthday is on Christmas, so we celebrate his birthday as the day we rescued him. For his 1st “birthday” we had a party where all of our friends brought over their dogs. Fun!

  14. My roommate and I try to set our pets’ birthdays around a major holiday so we can remember to celebrate. They’re mostly rescue animals, so their true birthdays are unknown. With her dog (my first dog, too), we celebrated her first birthday with lots of presents. My dog (and our cats) are kind of like subsequent children … not nearly as many pictures or presents.

  15. I definitely celebrate my dog’s birthdays. We either take them to McDonald’s and they each get a plain hamburger or bake them a special pup carrot cake. People oftem think I am crazy but they are my kids.

  16. Hi Tina!

Not sure if I’ve posted before… if not, I love your blog and I loooove Murphy 😀

About the tracks in Pump 74 … unfortunately this is because Les Mills are no longer allowed to use certain music artists’ music in their classes because of the new copyright rules. They have to pay a LOT of money to use popular music artists tracks so they’ve had to change their music a lot.. Unfortunately this applies to all their older releases as well so they can only play a certain handful of the tracks. It really sucks 🙁

    Hope this helps 🙂
    Em

  17. I celebrated my pup’s first birthday (like, I threw him a party and invited friends and had a doggie-friendly cake, hahah… I was 9, give me a break.) Now I think its cute if you give the dog a little present or something… but people who throw huge parties for their dogs are a bit ridiculous I think!

  18. Aww, I’m sure Murphy understood! Peanut butter makes everything better…

I’m all for celebrating pet birthdays 🙂 In fact, my fiance and I celebrated our pup’s first birthday in May. We treated him to a dog-friendly cupcake prepared by a swanky pet bakery near us!

  19. You’re right about Body Pump 74–that “no Doubt” remix is a mess! I did the new version at the gym this morning. Eh!

  20. I made my beagle dog friendly cupcakes complete with “icing” which was a mixture of peanut butter and vanilla yogurt. He shared them with his friends -our neighbors dogs, and they were all so happy with the treat!
