I love, love, love this cookbook!


Last week, I received a free copy of Well Fed: Paleo Recipes for People Who Love to Eat, and I’ve been in love ever since. I immediately read through the intro sections, including a forward by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig, which is something I never do. I usually go right for the recipes and ignore all the stuff in the beginning, but this cookbook offers so much more, so it was definitely worth reading.

Included in the front of the book is a section called “The Paleo Kitchen,” which has all the info you’ll need to “minimize the hassle of grocery shopping, to prep food so you’re well fed all week long, and to make cooking a creative pleasure.” Inside is a “Weekly Cook-up” with a sample shopping list and a “Cooking WOD,” which helps you prepare a week’s worth of food so you can eat clean and build meals for at least 5 days. There’s even a handy equation to estimate how much protein you need to buy for the week, which was super helpful to Mal and me. (We realized we need to buy more!) And, finally, there’s a section called “Your Paleo Pantry” with recommendations for spices, herbs, spice blends, and other pantry essentials (i.e. coconut aminos) as well as suggestions for your freezer (i.e. cooked shrimp, chopped collard greens). It’s perfect for someone just starting out with Paleo.

The recipes in Well Fed, however, are perfect for someone just starting out with Paleo or for someone who’s been eating this way for awhile because they’re not the same old recipes you see over and over again. How many times have you seen a Paleo recipe for almond flour pancakes? Yes, they’re delicious, but you don’t want to see this recipe in every single Paleo cookbook you own, right? Well Fed has all sorts of creative recipes as well as a bunch of sauces and seasonings to really mix things up.

Here’s a sampling of the “protein” recipes:

  • Cinnamon Beef Stew with Orange Gremolata
  • Moroccan Meatballs
  • Chocolate Chili
  • Mango-Shrimp Rolls
  • Italian Sausage and Eggplant Strata
  • Citrus Carnitas
  • Pad Thai <— recipe on CNC soon!

And then (can you tell I really love this cookbook?) there are variations for almost every recipe, so a single recipe is actually a whole bunch. So, for example, the Waldorf Tuna Salad recipe can become Mediterranean Tuna Salad, Middle Eastern Tuna Salad, or Tex-Mex Tuna Salad with just a few ingredient swaps and the book lays them out nice and neat. And, finally, important to note, the recipes don’t call for a ton of crazy ingredients or have a million directions. They’re all pretty simple and to the point, which is essential for people like me, who don’t have the patience for complicated recipes.
