Earlier this month, I shared an update about how things are going on the ulcerative colitis front as well as a few things I’m trying to help keep myself in remission, which includes adding the high-potency probiotic medical food, VSL#3, to my daily routine.

When I started, my main goal, of course, was to stay in remission, but I also wanted to feel better overall, especially in regards to my energy levels (or lack of!). I wish I had made these changes sooner! My cravings, particularly for coffee and sugar, have also subsided quite a bit. Sure, I still enjoy coffee and treats from time-to-time, but I don’t feel like they have control over me anymore. It’s nice to actually crave nutritious foods instead coffee and sugar non-stop!

  1. I love your openness in regards to your health, particularly digestive health. I’ve had digestive issues for my entire life and my mom actually mentioned this probiotic to me a few weeks back. I’m wondering if I should give it a whirl to bring me more comfort in my day to day life.

    Eliminating most dairy and processed foods has helped my digestion, and adding more plant-based nutrition has also helped. I’ve also cut down on the alcohol I drink, and my body is thanking me! If/when I consume alcohol, it’s one glass of wine/one beer and my stomach and digestion says thank you!

  2. I have a history of disordered eating, so I am very careful to not “eliminate” any food or food group from my diet. I have significantly cut back on dairy, because it makes my cystic acne flare. I also recently cut back on sweets and after about a week, noticed my craving for them has gone away.

    I’ve started making big smoothies in the morning, with nut butter, chia seeds, spinach, soymilk, fruits, etc topped with protein granola, and they fuel me up so well before work, I’m not crashing and cranky a few hours later.

  3. Eliminating gluten and dairy and adding Ox Bile and LypoGold have changed everything for me. I have leaky gut and have been working on it for close to a year. I’m way better than a year ago when I was looking like I was 6 months (gas) pregnant but not and doubling over in pain. I feel so much better, not healed but better.

  4. We have eliminated artificial sweeteners from our diet for some health issues my husband has been having(IBS) with no medical results after a few years.
    I must say the difference is amazing……he is feeling so much better and almost all symptoms have disappeared and its only been three weeks so far.

    Its not easy to do but so worth the change.

  5. I see above you mention this is helpful for people with UC, IBS and ileal pouch…any idea whether it helps with Crohn’s patients? I have Crohn’s and am in a particularly bad flare right now, as you know it can be so frustrating so I am interested in exploring anything that may help!
