Mastermind Weekend 1/16

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.


An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Hooray for trampoline workouts!

Lindsay and I teamed up for a partner workout, so while one of us used the trampoline, the other did exercises on the floor and then we’d switch.

Jumping on a trampoline is obviously a good time, but the instructor really made the class. He was a total hoot and super energetic. He also added a bunch of hip-hoppy dance moves to the workout, so it was a blast. At one point, he even called us “bad kitties,” which totally cracked me up. I love instructors who get really into the workout!

After the trampoline workout, I helped out with the fixmixer table for a few hours and then attended a session called Turn Your Post into an Article with Susan Ito. Here are some of my takeaways:

  • Any blog post can be turned into an article, personal essay, or feature. You just need to bolster it with stats, facts, definitions, anecdotes, helpful tools, resources, products, resources, quotes, etc. Susan gave the example of turning an “I-ate-oatmeal-and-went-for-a-run-post” into an article that talks about proper pre-workout fueling.
  • Read like a writer. We read like readers because we are readers, but reading like a writer is a different skill. First, read and enjoy. Then, write (on a blank piece of paper) the top 3 things you remember. Re-read with a highlighter: What are the most compelling lines? Why?
  • Audience is really important. Your final revision should be done with your readers in mind. For example: writing for Readers Digest versus Fitness magazine.
  • When submitting an article, do your homework. Read samples from whatever publication you’re sending to. You want to make sure your piece is a good fit. Google submission guidelines for the publication to get an idea what is expected for length, tone, etc.
  • Never address a submission piece with “Dear editor”. Do your research and personalize it.
  • Don’t give your life history in your bio. It should be 2-3 sentences at most.
  • If you get a rejection, never write back (unless it’s to say thanks for your time). Don’t argue or get upset for them not taking your piece.
  • WritersMarket.com is a great resource. It costs $6 per month for a subscription, but it’s worth it. It gives you editor info, much they pay, word count requirements, etc.


After the writing session, it was time for lunch.

So true, right? Sweat is liquid awesome.

I loaded my plate with mixed greens, steamed spinach, and a piece of salmon.

Which I then sprinkled with a variety of McCormick spices that were on each of the tables. The ground (cayenne) red pepper was especially awesome on the salmon and spinach.

Round one didn’t fill me up, so I went back for a second serving of salmon and spinach.

I also snacked on a Dark Chocolate Cherry SOYJOY bar, which was quite delicious. It sort of reminded me of a dry (but good) brownie.

After lunch, we took a group photo of all of the Fitbloggin’ attendees.

And then I said goodbye to my blog friends since I had a flight to catch back to Boston. I <3 Gina from SkinnyTaste!

On the ride to the airport, I snacked on some trail mix/granola from McCormick.

  4. In a cross-fit class the instructor got about an inch from my face and was calling me a grasshopper. I was so tired but it made me laugh so hard! I love instructors that do that!

    Also … tramp workouts are amazing! I still think that jumping on mine when I was younger made me the workout freak that I am today.

  5. LOTS of variety! I knew I was getting hooked on fitness when I have more workouts to do than there are nights in the week! I have ten or twelve DVDs in the Yoga Booty Ballet series, I swim with an instructor three times a week, I alternate twenty-minute YBB abs or butt workout in the mornings (nothing to sweat too much or jump around too much, just enough to get me going). I am now learning belly dancing! I walk on the beach on Saturday afternoon. Variety is key, sometimes I’m with people, much of the time on my own. I also went horseback riding yesterday. GREAT calorie burn!
