I woke up bright and early yesterday morning to get my sweat on. The hotel where I stayed in Des Moines had a pretty nice gym (I actually worked out there the last time I visited), but I decided to do a CrossFit-inspired workout in my hotel room instead.
The best thing about creating my own workouts is that I get to pick all of my favorite exercises and make it as hard (or as easy) as I want. This workout incorporates some of my very favorite moves (yay, Burpees!) and gives you a mix of upper and lower body strengthening and core work.
Have fun with this one! It’s definitely a butt kicker! Maybe I wasn’t totally awake, but I stopped a number of times to catch my breath and rest during it. It’s a total body workout, and it took me almost 15 minutes to complete.
After my workout, I took a quick shower and then met Chandra for breakfast. She lives in Des Moines, so she met me at my hotel and then we walked across the street to Mr. Filet Steakhouse. A friend of Chandra’s told her their breakfast was really good, so we were excited to check it out.
As soon as we sat down, our server came to our table to offer us coffee. Without thinking, I said yes to a mug of (caffeinated) hot coffee and proceeded to drink it. Chandra and I chatted non-stop, so the caffeine + my colon/colitis didn’t even cross my mind. But, hours later, I’m happy to report: NO ISSUES! Hooray!! I don’t plan to start drinking caffeinated coffee on a regular basis, but I’m glad to know I can enjoy a little bit every now and then without issues.
For breakfast, I ordered two eggs with homefries and toast, which is clearly my favorite diner breakfast. I ate this same meal the day before!
One of the signature dishes at Mr. Filet’s is their Greek omelet (Chandra ordered it for breakfast), so our server brought me a side dish with part of one so I could try it. How nice is that?
The Greek omelet was awesomeāādefinitely order it if you ever visit Mr. Filet’s! Inside was Gyro meat, crumbled feta, and sautĆĀ©ed green bell pepper and onion. Holy yum indeed.
Chandra and I hadn’t seen each other since March 2011 for the Black Cat 10-miler, so it was great to be reunited. Luckily, we won’t have to go as long before we see each other again. We’ll both be in New Orleans for the Rock āĖN’ Roll Half Marathon in February with Monica. Woohoo! Can’t wait!
Question of the Day
When you go out for breakfast, do you typically order a sweet (pancakes, waffles, muffins) or savory (eggs, bacon, sausage) meal?

I love the “leave a trail of genius” on that notepad – so fun! As for breakfast, if I go out to eat, I always order French Toast. On the rare occasion I will order pancakes, but that’s usually just if they have pumpkin or whole grain pancakes that sound tasty.
I love ALL breakfast foods and I love going out for breakfast, so what I order usually depends on how I feel that day. I can’t get myself to do a whole workout on my own, I give up as soon as it gets hard. I wish I could do a hotel room workout like yours but I just can’t!
I almost always order sweet breakfasts when I”m eating out because it’s something I seldom make for myself at home! Buuut if I was at a restaurant with a Greek omelet I’d probably have to order that – sounds good!
I go for sweet…preferably with a side of savory bacon.
YAY! So happy you didn’t have any issues when you drank the coffee!
It really depends on my mood breakfast wise. We rarely go out to breakfast but my ultimate breakfast has a little of both! š
Savory. I always order the same breakfast at every diner or restaurant: 2 poached eggs, sliced tomato, wheat toast, and tons of coffee.
Always sweet for me!
We go to the same place every Sunday and I always order the same thing:
eggs over hard, bacon, hashbrowns, and an english muffin.
I LOVE french toast, belgian waffles, and the carrot cake and pumpkin pancakes that are so abundant this time of year but I have to do so sparingly because all those sugars and carbs aren’t a good idea for me!
I usually get more savory items…I don’t like omelets usually but that Greek omelet looks good!
When doing hotel room work outs do you ever worry about making too much noise for the people below you? I have always wanted to do a hotel workout but get worried I would be disturbing the people on the floor below. I don’t know if they would even be able to hear it but I just wasn’t sure.
I like a little bit of both when it comes to breakfast! I usually make my sister or best friend order something sweet like french toast while I order something savory, like an egg sandwich, and then we split it. SO GOOD and the best of both worlds š
I like a mix of both! An egg or two with bacon + a side of pancakes or toast with jam is the best!
I always think I’m going to go sweet but then I go savory without fail.
Love the hotel room workout! Going to have to remember that one! I am a savory breakfast person while I am out! I usually get some sort of omelet! While I do love pancakes and waffles it’s very hard to find gluten free options at restaurants so I usually stick to having those at home! I used to love Chandra’s blog! So glad to see her doing well!
I used to be a sweet breakfast person, but lately I’m more of a savory person. Usually sweet means carbs/grains… and calories. So I tend to go for a egg/meat combo
I would prefer a sweet, but I work best with protein. So, I usually ‘share’ with my kiddos. Our favorite diner has the best Italian skillet=over easy eggs on top of italian sausauge, peppers, onions, and hashbrowns. Yum! So the kids get the caramel french toast. It is to die for. I snag a piece of the toast and the caramel sauce. Heavenly!
Yay for being able to enjoy coffee! It’s just something zen-like about taking that sip of caffeinated coffee when you’re tired from time to time. lol.
I normally end up having to get oatmeal and fruit but that’s okay it’s what I prefer. Though I do love restaurant scrambled eggs… so much more fluffier than when you make them at home.
Yay coffee!! I love to order biscuits & gravy whenever I can get it!
Eggs, bacon, homefries. Keep the toast, unless they have english muffins.
The Kidless Kronicles
I always order eggs, but that’s more because I’m gluten intolerant! Granted, I’d probably order then anyway now since I’m more health conscious and I know just pancakes wouldn’t keep me full for very long!
When I go out for bfest its always savory! I always get the same thing…. an omelet (usually veggies and cheese), hashbrowns and toast.
Great hotel room workout! I love making up workouts on notepad paper on the fly š And I’m definitely a savory breakfast eater. Omelets and potatoes, yum.
I use to order Sweet (french toast) but not that I am getting healthier I tend to order eggs š
I should try that WOD just to see what at-home CrossFit is like. I’d go in Omaha, but I don’t have the funds. It’s almost three times what I’m paying for the regular gym (family discount).
I usually get pancakes or waffles, with a side of sausage for a little savory into the mix, otherwise, it’s too much sweet.
There’s a restaurant called Jimmy’s Egg (we have 3 in Omaha), and their banana pecan pancakes are to die for! I still need my side of breakfast meat, but their pancakes are so good!
I tend to gravitate towards sweeter breakfasts. I’m a sucker for some good pancakes! But, I usually order bacon on the side for the sweet/salty combo.
I am obsessed with feta so I bet I would really like that Greek omelet! When I order breakfast out, I always like to get both sweet and savory, like eggs and pancakes or a waffle with a side of thick-cut bacon.. Yum!
I usually order savoury dishes, especially poached eggs as I can’t cook em myself!
Eggs all the way! But I always steal a bite from whoever orders pancakes or French toast
I’m a total savory breakfast girl, but….. I don’t mind stealing a bite or two of my kiddos pancakes!
Congrats on the coffee!!! Breakfast for me depends on the restaurant. If they’re known for having out-of-this-world pancakes/french toast, I’ll probably order that but normally I stick to savory.
oh gosh, I haven’t gone out to breakfast in yearsssssss… but I guess I’d go with poached eggs or something– even though I don’t eat eggs it seems like it’d be better on my stomach than pancakes lol
I run into the sweet/savory breakfast quandary all the time: if it’s too sweet, I end up with a sugar pit in my stomach, and savory stuff can be too heavy for me first thing in the morning. But I’ve recently started to make oatmeal with cashew butter, cocoa powder, and a little bit of agave nectar – problem solved! š
Chandra totally looks like Cely from http://www.runningoffthereeses.com
Fun WOD! I’m always looking for ones I can do in hotels or at home. As for breakfast out, I like to start savory and then wrap it up with a bite of something sweet. Best of both worlds š
This is always such a hard decision – sweet or savory. Ideally i try to get both – eggs or omelet with one pancake on the side. Savory usually wins for me though if i have to decide between the two!
Yum! There’s seriously nothing better than diner breakfasts š Love the idea for the hotel room workout too. Great idea!
Savory, I am always ordering Eggs Benedict or one of its many variations. However, if my husband orders something sweet, I always steal a few bites.
Sooo are you two sisters or what??? If not you should be š
Savory- I will almost always order an omelet of some sort. But that doesn’t mean I don’t drool over all of the sweet options- pancakes, waffles, french toast, oh my!
Love pancakes. Unfortunately, I don’t like eggs except for hardboiled.
I always get a veggie omlet when I go out for breakfast. I don’t care for regular pancakes or waffles. but for some reason I love your 2 ingrident pancake with nut butter oh and oatmeal minus the oats. I would rather eat at home and have oatmeal minus oats with sunflower seed butter
I’m an omelet girl definitely with a side of fruit to close out my sweet tooth. But at home I have protein pancakes and greek yogurt š
Woohoo for the return of caffeinated coffee! When I go out for breakfast, I always order a savory dish–usually two scrambled eggs or an egg-white omelet (with a ton of veggies), plus homefries and whole-wheat toast. Diner pancakes and waffles taste great, but I know I’ll be hungry an hour later.
Those homefries look so good! This is not totally related to your post…but your mention of the Black Cat 10 miler reminded me to ask you about it. I live in Boston area and was interested in running the Black Cat 10 miler this year. I’m a newbie runner(about 1.5 years) and the farthest I’ve run in a race is a 10k. What is this race like? Good course? Thanks!
Just click on the link for my race recap! š
Breakfast looks very yummy, but I always go for sweet! I love your hotel room workout, I will definitely be giving it a try.
Oh my goodness, those homefries look unreal and absolutely perfect. I feel like that is the epitome of what I want when I order homefries, but they never come like that (the crispiness looks amazing). I always order savory, mostly because sweet makes me feel like I did something wrong so early in the day- and I love omelets. I actually ate the best omelet I’ve ever had last weekend- it had caramelized onions, tomatoes, and guacamole.
I always order a sweet breakfast but then look longingly at my husband’s plate full of savory food and wish I had ordered differently! š
I am going to try that workout. I love workouts that can be done anywhere and in about 15 minutes. No excuse not to do it, right?! Ha! I can always find an excuse!
I have always been a fan of chocolate chip pancakes and the extra sweet syrup to slather all over the top. As an adult I have leaned towards sticking to the multigrain or whole wheat pancake option with sugar free syrup and save the calories for when I OWN my pancakes full of peanut butter. Now it’s a nonguilty, wonderful 20 minutes of eating. Love.
I enjoy both sweet and savory. Normally it is oatmeal with a side of homefries.
I am definitely trying out that workout tonight!
Pancakes and waffles and French toast! I figure going out for breakfast is special so I treat myself.
What happened to Chandra’s blog?
I’m a pancake girl through and through though it’s hard to ANYTHING vegan friendly in Ireland when eating out! Love the workout, definitely one to try. It’s like some of the zwow workouts, definitely trying this week!
