Three Things I Won’t Leave Home Without

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Greetings from the bus terminal at South Station!

Once again, I’m on my way to New York City. This time, my plans are: hanging out with my friend Beth, meeting Bob Harper (no big deal), running with Theodora, and eating gigantic cookies. It’s a lot to fit in, but I’m psyched for the next 24 hours! (I’m headed back to Boston tomorrow morning.)

Monte Cristo sandwiches were on the agenda for last night’s dinner, but Mal and I weren’t in the mood for them, so we made some massive salads and topped them with sliced ham, roasted Brussels sprouts, and hardboiled eggs. Also in the mix: greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, pickles, truffle oil, and balsamic vinegar.

I also enjoyed a glass of white wine with dinner.

After dinner, I drank another glass of wine.

And sat on the couch where I ate approximately 3,000 handfuls of trail mix. (Have you tried the Swiss mix? Holy yum. Why is this stuff so darn delicious!?!)

Before going to bed last night, I checked the CrossFit 781 website for today’s WOD like I do every night. (Starting around 9:00 PM, I hit refresh on the main page every 15 minutes or so until the new workout is posted. I’m a crazy person. It’s fine.) Today’s workout involved a lot of running and kettlebell swings (two of my favorites), so I didn’t want to miss it. I ended up going to the 6:30 class this morning, and I’m so glad that I did. You never regret a workout!

Before heading to CrossFit, I ate breakfast, which probably wasn’t the best idea since I had “Oatmeal” Minus the Oats sloshing around in my stomach while I ran, but I always need something in my stomach before exercising.

While I ate my breakfast, Murphy creepily stared at me/the peanut butter jar. (This dog is seriously obsessed with peanut butter.)

IMG_4576 (482x640)

His pug persistence paid off because I gave him the rest of the jar to lick.

He was psyched.

Check out today’s WOD! So fun!

For time:

Run 1200 Meters
9 Push Presses
9 Kettlebell Swings
Run 800 Meters
15 Push Presses
15 Kettlebell Swings
Run 400 Meters
21 Push Presses
21 Kettlebell Swings
Run 200 Meters

Rx: Push Press (115, 75) KB Swing (70, 53)
L2: (95, 55) (53, 35)
L1: (85, 45) (45, 30)

I used the Level 2 weight (55 pounds for Push Press + 35-pound Kettlebell), which ended up being the perfect amount for me””challenging, but do-able with good form. I was a sweaty mess by the end (my friend Kim asked me if I just went swimming! Ha!), and I finished in 17:37. What a great way to start the day!

When I got home from CrossFit, I had about 1.5 hours to take Murphy out, shower, get dressed, finish packing, make my lunch, register for the Army 10-Miler, and walk 1.26 miles to the train station to catch the commuter rail to Boston. I don’t know how I managed to do it all and not miss my train, but I did!

For lunch, I packed a peach Chobani Greek yogurt, two waffles (Van’s Power Grains) with almond butter, and a bottle of water.

IMG_4603 (640x480)

I also made a protein shake with vanilla protein powder, iced coffee, and coconut milk, which I ended up drinking on my walk to the train station.

As I left my house, I said goodbye to this adorable pug:

And then I double-checked that I had my wallet, phone, and camera, which are the three things I never leave home without.

Question of the Day

What items do you never leave home without?

I’m boarding the Bolt Bus in just a few minutes. See you in NYC!

P.S. I’m hosting a “retro” cereal giveaway on Trading Up Downtown today!

  1. OOh that Crossfit workout DOES sound fun! My coach cancelled today’s 6am so I’m going after work.

Also I don’t know how you keep a big tub of that trailmix around. I’d eat it all in one sitting!

  2. Glad to know I’m not the only one who obsessively hits refresh multiple times until the next day’s WOD is posted. I go to the 6am class so its crucial that I know what the WOD is so I know what to wear and lay out for the morning. Have fun on your trip!

  3. Oh that WOD sounds like a good one! I am totally one of those people that is obsessed to find out what the WOD is for the next day. I like to know what to pack in my gym bag to wear, what I need to mentally prepair for and overall I am a control freak and need to know these things. Have a great trip.

  4. tina, do you think you could get away with not joining a cross fit and doing the work outs? I wish I could afford it and hope to be able to some day.

    you look so fit!

    1. Definitely! CrossFit headquarters posts their workouts everyday on their website, and I post a lot of the ones I do at my box, so you could easily do them at the gym on your own. Most of the WODs require equipment, so it might be tough to do them at home if you don’t have what you need. However, there are a ton of Travel WODs you can do– no equipment needed!

  5. BOB HARPER?! Your life ROCKS! What is it with pugs and peanut butter? Meatball is the same way… he also comes running when he hears a banana open. LOL! 3 things I never leave home without: Water Bottle, Hand Sanitizer, and Burt’s Bees for my lips. (I teach so the hand sanitizer is sooooo necessary! 😉 )

  6. So random – I love your bedspread! Can you share where you go it from?

Also, I can’t get over your arms! You look amazing and you can definitely tell the difference Cross Fit has made! Rock it out lady!! Love seeing the amazing workouts and then looking at the time it took you to complete. Amazing results for minimal time. Love it!

  7. I’m glad my box doesn’t post WODs in advance–I’d be a total stalker, and I know I’d skip some if I knew what they were in advance! I just get surprised every morning. 😀

  8. Man, crossfit sounds SO fun! And like many already said, I can see that it works 😉 I never leave my house without my water bottle! You can take my wallet away (well, not really), my dignity, but you can’t take my water…haha

  9. Oh, I totally stalk/refresh websites if I know something is supposed to be posted soon … glad I’m not alone in my crazy. 🙂 I never leave home without my phone, wallet, and sunglasses/umbrella.

  10. Hi! I just stumbled across your blog and I love you…wait, that came off weird…I love your blog! And your pug 🙂 My pug’s name is Lucy and she is perfect in every little puggy way.

I never home without my phone for sure, I hate having to run with it but with two kiddos at home I can’t fathom the idea of missing an emergency while out on a run.

    Safe Travels!!!

  11. I do the same thing with the WODs! I start checking online every five minutes after the last class of the day ends haha. I also get really upset and feel anxious if it’s not posted by the time I go to bed…that may be a sign of OCD.

And I also bought swiss trail mix at the store this week and told my husband that it was a “treat” for him (he loooves trail mix) and then ended up eating most of the bag myself. Whoops!

  12. Love the CrossFit WOD! What do you think about CrossFit as far as results? Also, I just started reading your blog and I am completely in love with your dog!

  13. Hi Tina! I love your CrossFit water bottle. Would you ever go to the CrossFit Games? We’re thinking about going since it’s in California and we’re in Las Vegas. The hubby doesn’t but I’d like to make a weekend of it. Anyway…I won’t leave home without the same three things you mentioned. And, I’d add sunglasses and lip gloss. Have fun in NYC!

    1. Sadly, not in person tomorrow, but I’ve interviewed him twice in the past. Just click on the link in my post that says ‘Bob Harper’ to see them! 🙂

  14. You are looking fantastic Tina!! I only wish I had the same amount of devotion that you have. 🙂

I never leave the house without my Chapstick. Cannot stand chapped lips!

  15. You seriously have the coolest life ever. LoL. And did I see a tweet about CrossFit Games earlier? Gah!

And whenever I leave the house, I say to my hubs “cell phone keys wallet?!” and he adds “and Angela!” Our normal checklist:)

  16. I cannot leave home without chapstick.

Isn’t it creepy when our dogs stare at us when we eat. My dog (part pug!) and cat stare at me when I eat tortilla chips! They both absolutely adore them! My dog also gives me the stare when I’m sitting/laying where he can’t be in my lap or next to me.

I’m not exactly sure why, but I do not like Bob Harper. There is something about him that rubs me the wrong way. In part because he endorsed a weight loss pill, which I do not think are healthy. Also, I saw him on the Today show and he was promoting his “Skinny Diet” book, and I dislike the “go to bed hungry” rule. I wasn’t impressed by his “diet” on the show, but I’d be interested in your takeaway. Maybe your meeting with him will change my mind!

  17. Trail mix is my downfall..that and chips and salsa..once I start… I can’t stop!…

I can’t leave home without a water bottle, cell phone, and keys!

  18. Tina, you are looking amazing! Do you think you are getting
More toned and trip because of crossfit or something else? You are certainly motivation for me!

  19. Tina, thanks for posting that workout. I did it, and it was KILLER!! I felt so awesome that I was able to complete it. It took me just under 24 minutes to do it, and I modified it a bit (did dumbbell push press because I didn’t have a bar). It was just the type of workout I needed to remind myself that I am strong and I tough!
