Three Cool Things

Worst blog title ever? Probably. But, it tells you exactly what this post is about! Ha!

This morning, I woke up to the sounds of “ooohs” and “aahhs” coming from the bathroom. (I promise this story is rated PG!) I recently bought a new memory foam mat for our bathroom, so Mal made sure to let me know just how good it felt on his feet when he got out of the shower. Even at 6:11 in the morning, my husband is a total goofball. What a way to start the day!

Hello, hemp milk. Long time, no see!

Back when I first started CNC, I used to drink hemp milk all of the time, but, for some reason, I stopped buying it. It’s sort of expensive (less so at Trader Joe’s, which is why I bought it), but it’s so good for you.

According to Dr. Andrew Weil:

Hemp seeds contain a three-to-one ratio of Omega-6 and Omega-3 essential fatty acids and other nutrients include magnesium, phytosterols, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, calcium, fiber, iron, potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin, niacin and thiamin.

Hemp milk also contains 10 essential amino acids, making it a good vegetarian source of protein as hemp protein does not contain phytates, enzyme inhibitors found in some soy protein that can interfere with the absorption of essential minerals. Hemp protein may also be more digestible than soy protein because unlike soy, it doesn’t contain oligosaccharides, complex sugars that can cause flatulence if not properly broken down during digestion [source].

Hemp is some nutritious stuff! I really want to incorporate it again into my diet. Besides seeds and milk, are there other hemp options out there? Hemp protein, right? Anything else?

For breakfast, I made Overnight Oats in a Jar with rolled oats, hemp milk, chia seeds, walnuts, and raisins. I also added a second scoop of peanut butter to the mix.

Tabata Coach

The other day, I received an email from Motion Traxx about their new Tabata Coach album, which looks really cool. I love Tabata workouts because they’re quick and dirty and burn some serious calories!

Tabata Coach features music with audio cues that guide you through various movements, including Jumping Jacks, High Knees, Squat Jumps, and Mountain Climbers, which reminds me a lot of my CrossFit workouts. I figured Tabata Coach would be a great option for those of you who want to try CrossFit, but don’t have a location near you or the funds to become a member. You can buy the Tabata Coach album on iTunes or Amazon.

  1. I use hemp protein all the time- I buy Manitoba Harvest 70% (unflavored) but also the vanilla and chocolate kind. They also have a fibre one that can be used in place of flour.

      1. @Tina: I also use the Manitoba Harvest hemp protein – just as a warning this stiff is pretty gritty and green tasting. I love my green smoothies but for some reason I find this taste difficult to deal with even when it’s mixed with other things.. maybe I should try the flavoured ones!

  2. That is so funny – I JUST read Gina’s post about hemp. It looks like I need to get on that bandwagon since the only hemp I’ve used is to make necklaces. 🙂

    On a different note, that bathmat looks amazing – might need to look into that, too!

  3. Oh man, I’m going to have to show my husband this post. I’ve been wanting to get one of those memory foam bath mats for months now, ever since I saw them at Costco. He keeps saying we don’t “need it.” Well, I most certainly think we do and apparently so does Mal. Can they be washed in a regular washing machine? I can’t wait to get one!

  4. Tina – try hemp seeds! They taste like sunflower seeds, but aren’t hard like the seeds. They have 11 grams of protein per serving. I eat them everyday on my salads. I am a vegan and they are a staple in my diet, but I recommend them to non-vegans as well. You can get a large bag of them on Amazon for around $30 and it will last you nearly two months. Amazing super food!

    2. I’ve heard amazing things about that bathmat. Perhaps a trip to Kohls to pick one up is in my future.

  6. I’ve never heard of those tabata workouts on iTunes. I HAVE been wanting to try crossfit but don’t have a place near me, so I think I will try these. Especially because I’ve had iTunes gift cards for over a year that need to be used!

  7. Congratulations, Tina! Also, thank you for reminding me of hemp milk. I usually choose almond, coconut or soy milk but could use a change right about now. I can’t recall if I loved the taste but I’ll give Trader Joe’s a try.

  8. I’ve seen memory foam bath mats at Costco recently and have debated purchasing one… Can’t justify it yet since out bathmat is only a couple months old but it sure does look luxurious [and a nice way to hop out of the shower at the crack of dawn]!

  10. I just did my first Tabata workout with my trainer this morning, and I’m proud to report it kicked my…everything. Oof. The intervals sound so easy at first (20 seconds on, 10 seconds off…is that Tabata standard?), but toe touches, battle ropes, and sprints/jumping jacks make them seem oh so long…

  12. I read on another blog that hemp has a stronger flavor than almond, soy, and cows milk. Do you still use this for cereal, oatmeal, baking, etc?

  13. I’m sorry…but the thought of hemp milk makes me think of those chunky hemp bracelets I used to make in summer camp… in a liquid form! Haha.. I just can’t wrap my head around this one!!

  14. I use hemp oil! I even used it in baked goods & I feel it gives them an extra moist (i know some people hate that word) consistency!

  16. I’ve never tried Hemp Milk. I recently got a sample of Hemp Hearts from my health food store. The description kind of scares me: Hemp Hearts prevent constipation. If stools become liquid – quit starches and ground foods.

    Anytime there is mention of liquid stools, I’m usually not interested!! 🙂

  17. Trader Joe’s actually sells a really good chocolate hemp protein powder, in case you’re interested. I liked the extra texture and the nutritional stats of course!

  18. I found hemp seed granola at Whole Foods and Sprouts! It’s great and one of the lowest-cal granolas I’ve ever seen. If I’m not mistaken, a half cup is 140 calories!
