Just a heads up: This is a super random blog post… and you’re welcome. Ha!

Mal had today off from school since it’s Good Friday, so we (ok, him and Murphy) slept in and enjoyed a leisurely morning together. I actually had a terribly disturbing dream about Murphy being attacked by a big, white sea turtle (random), so I was all bugged out when I woke up and could not get back to sleep.

Ok, listen to this bizarre-o dream”¦

It was a warm, sunny day, and Murphy and I were driving by the big, beautiful mansions on the ocean in Newport, Rhode Island. I saw a bunch of people on the side of the road looking at something, so I stopped and got out of the car with Murphy to check it out. It ended up being a small pool with a huge, white sea turtle swimming around inside. I thought it was pretty cool, so I told Murphy to sit in front of the pool, so I could snap a photo on my iPhone to send Mal. As soon as I took the photo, Murphy either jumped or fell into the water with the sea turtle, who immediately grabbed him and held him in a headlock under the water. I, of course, spazzed out and jumped in the water to save Murphy, but, no matter what I did, I could not loosen the turtle’s grip, so I woke up totally distraught and almost in tears. As soon as I realized it was all a bad dream, and Murphy was safe and snoozing right next to me, I immediately relaxed and gave him a huge pug hug. Whoa. Super weird dream.

Breakfast

I had a serious craving for green juice when I woke up this morning, so I whipped up a batch with spinach, kale, apple, celery, carrot, and ginger. I love starting my day with fresh juice. Yes, I do.

012

A little while later, I made a batch of OMG Pancakes for Mal and me. I topped mine with sunflower butter. Yum! One of my favorite breakfasts ever.

016

Once we finished breakfast, Mal and I headed out to buy a couple of iced coffees from 1st Stop, which Mal and Murphy are currently obsessed with. Mal loves their Seattle Dark Roast iced coffee and Murphy loves their Milk Bones.

018

As you can see, Murphy got more and more excited the closer we got to 1st Stop.

Excited-panic.

024

Chomp!

026

Totally breaking one of his New Year’s resolutions”¦

028

I ended up ordering a decaf French vanilla-hazelnut iced coffee with milk. It was excellent””sweet, but not too sweet. Great choice!

030

I spent the next couple of hours tackling my inbox and then went to cash in a Groupon for a facial. (Confession: I have a serious Groupon “problem.” Must. Stop. Buying. Them.)

The facial was so great (super relaxing), and I’m actually thinking about purchasing a package deal for future appointments. I almost bought one before I left, but I decided to sleep on it before shelling out a few hundred bucks. I want a bunch of facials, but do I really need a bunch of facials, ya know? We’ll see.

Lunch

When I got home from my facial, I whipped up a simple, one-serving version of “Sunshine Sauce,” which I added to some leftover spaghetti squash. Mmm! So good!

Snack

After lunch, I shared a piece of Starbucks Lemon Loaf with Mal. I needed some change to tip the esthetician before my facial, so I popped into Starbucks, which was right next door, to buy a little something-something for later. As expected, the Lemon Loaf was delightful.

Random story: In high school, I used to work at Starbucks, so when I closed the store on Friday and Saturday nights during my senior year (I know, I was a super nerd), I’d take the leftover pieces of Lemon Loaf for Mal and then drop them off at his house because I knew how much he liked them (and, ok, I just wanted to see him). And he still loves Starbucks Lemon Loaf today. Oooh, memories.

A little while later, a couple of contractors came by our house to give us a quote for putting an addition onto our house. Mal and I love, love, love our house and never want to move, so we’re seriously considering adding another bedroom and bathroom.

049_thumb[1]

We’re thinking about building up, so the contractors checked out our attic space to see what’s possible.

051_thumb

We have another contractor coming on Tuesday and we might hire an architect now, so I have a feeling this is going to be quite the project. I’m starting to think we’re crazy people, but we really want to stay in our house forever.

Questions of the Day

Have you had any weird dreams lately?

Has anyone ever lived through a remodel of their home? Any advice for us?

  1. My advice after several different forms of renovation – however long they tell you it will take – add on a few to several weeks to that! And if you are lucky, it will go quicker…

  2. I want to redo our kitchen! Our neighbors did it but it took them 8 weeks! I couldn’t imagine not being in my kitchen or cooking for that long! They had to do dishes in the bathroom!

  3. omg I had such a weird dream (although not as weird as yours…). In mine this guy was saying he really wanted to date me, but that he also wanted to have “ladies on the side” if you will… I woke up and was like, “WHAT!?!? No no…” Hahaha no idea where that one came from.

  4. Renos seem to always take longer than expected and cost more than planned, so my advice is make sure you have extra money in your budget to account for that. We did our bathroom last September and it took about 4 weeks longer than we were told and cost several thousand dollars more. Also be prepared for extra stress on your relationship becuase living through a reno seems to produce that.

  5. I guess I didn’t realize that you and Mal were together for that long! Wow, so cute that you still have that tradition today 🙂

I can tell you lots of fun facts about sea turtles (if you’d like) because I’ve actually done a lot of work with them and my best friend was a sea turtle last summer who had his head split open by a boat. I’m glad your dream wasn’t real 😀 That baby sea turtle is so so cute up there 😀

When my ex and I bought our condo but hadn’t moved in yet, our air conditioner broke and flooded our living room. When I moved in a month later, half of my wall was missing near the AC and I had no flooring anywhere downstairs. It took about a month, month and a half to get everything into workable condition, but now my condo is gorgeous!

  6. I had such a wierd dream too! I don’t exactly remember, but it ended in someone trying to hurt me, so I was going to punch him/her in the face. And seriously, this is the third time I have dreamt something like that and every single time, I actually really punched something! The first time I hit the wall with my fist, so I had to clean the blood of the wall. The second time, my hand jerked right out in front of me, resulting in throwing my phone across my bedroom, and now the same thing! It’s so strange because I’m a very peacefull sleeper, I don’t toss and turn a lot and don’t talk in my sleep, but apparantly I like throwing punches in my dreams.

  7. Yes! We bought a fixer upper and have been remodeling off and on for almost 7 years. YIKES. I can’t wait for it to finally ALL be finished. Advice: make sure you find someone who will do it right. Ask friends and family for their recommendations. Just because it’s cheaper, does not mean it’s the better deal 🙂

  8. My parents did a lot of remodeling on their first home–I just remember that projects took longer than quoted. (Growing up we actually lived in the basement for a couple of months while the kitchen and main living space were updated. I think I even had a basement birthday party!).
I had a bizzaro dream this week–I was very wealthy and had private security. I ended up in a faraway land and had to escape–Ben Affleck was my security guard and saved the day 🙂

  9. Your remodel sounds exciting! My husband and I are currently in round 3 of our remodel and here are my top 3 tips: Be prepared for things to go over budget (build yourself a buffer). Be prepared for things to go over time (I always double what they tell me and then I’m happily surprised.) Get as much sleep as possible (doing a renovation is exciting, but it’s also OUT of routine and that’s draining. Plus there are a million little decisions that’ll have to be made every day. Those decisions eat away at your executive function reserve, which can easily leave you grouchy and overtired. Sleep, exercise, and good eats helps combat that… well that and maybe making sure to be extra sweet to your spouse because they’re tired too. Anyway, good luck! In the end, it’ll be more than worth it!

  10. I actually had a similar dream – so weird that you posted this!

We take our pup to daycare every week or so and they have a zero entry pool. I had a dream that there was an alligator in the pool (hiding of course – sneaky little things!) and snapped at Max!! I woke up in a panic but, like you, saw that my little stinker was safe.

Problem was…we took him to daycare today. Totally didnt want to leave. Apparently, alligators in a dream are either a sign of a new beginning or that something horrible will happen. He’s home safe from daycare so I’m hoping its a new begining…and uf so, I may just have some weird sort of ESP thing going on because just last night on my blog I wrote about wanting to just start over and hit the restart button.

  11. That’s such a cute story of you and Mal! The lemon loaf from Starbucks is the best thing they make, hands down. 🙂 what kind out juicer do you have/do you like it? Mark and I are looking into buying one.

  12. That sunshine sauce looks amazing!! And that would be super awesome to add another bedroom and bathroom. I cant wait until I move in to a house.

My weirdest dream was probably when I was a kid and a leprechaun was chasing me around. A scary one. The only thing that saved me was climbing up the ladder to my slide. For some reason the leprechaun couldn’t go upstairs? hahaha. It terrified me

  13. Ooh, green juice. That sounds good right now.

We flipped a house that we were living in last year. My only advice is to embrace the fact that nothing will be clean. Ever. All of your posessions will be either packed and stored away (if you’re smart) or eternally enveloped in a cloud of drywall dust (if you’re dumb like me). Oh, and you’ll go overbudget and overschedule. That is all! 🙂

  14. Prepare food a few weeks in advance and freeze if your kitchen is going to be over run…plan on spending as much time away from the house as possible and don’t bother trying to clean up too much you’ll go demented, just keep it relatively liveable and do the clean up at the end!

  15. I am debating getting a juicer. Do you find it is expensive to buy all the produce for juicing? I am hesitant about the cost since for me it would be more of a boost or snack than replacing a meal.

  16. That is an awful dream. I frequently have dreams that my cats get out of the house and get hit by cars. I always wake up crying and panting.

  17. I sometimes have random dreams of my teeth falling out. And I’m jonesing for a juicer and for the Property Brothers to give me an ambush home makeover.

  18. Hire a good, trustworthy contractor! Check references and the Attorney Generals web site. It will take longer than they say, and ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable. Good luck!

  19. That is exciting about your possible remodel! My advice would be to spend the extra money to have it done quickly (instead of trying to do things for yourself). My husband and I have been in the process of finishing our basement for the past YEAR- we (and when I say “we” what I really mean is HE) are doing everything ourselves- this is great because it saves money; however, it takes so long because we can only work on the basement at night and on the weekends. In retrospect, it would have been nice to pay more and just have it DONE. It is draining to have an ongoing, unfinished project in your house. Good luck!

  20. I have had some weird dreams this week but when I wake up, i start forgetting them. I hate that. Your dream sounds pretty funky. Hmmmm.
OMG I love how you guys want to add on to your house. House projects like that are a big step, fun, crazy.

  21. I have to say that I think it’s crazy that you found a picture of a white sea turtle, who knew that existed?! I have strange dreams in cycles it seems like, for a week or so, and then I don’t have any for a few months.

I’ve never had a facial…Do they really leave your face all red like you see in movies?

  22. Weird dreams have a something to do with your fears or repressed wishes. I have a friend Psychologists and often asked about the meaning of my dreams. Well, it’s up to you to figure out what the heck was that white turtle symbolizes. Anyway, I’ve done a lot of renovation in my house and I made a lot of changes in the kitchen. My advice is to hire someone who could really design what you have in mind. 🙂

  23. We are planning on doing exactly the same with our home! Adding another bedroom en suite and a dining room and utility room underneath. We initially bought the house as a wreck which we then did up. Living on the dirt floor with no electricity or running water for two months wasn’t exactly amazing, but definitely worth it. We had total control over what our house looked like and I never want to leave now!

  24. I had a super weird and scary dream the other night and remembered it when I woke up in the middle of the night, but couldn’t remember the details in the morning. It’s so weird how that happens!

I’ve never lived through a remodel but I watch a lot of people do it on HGTV!

  25. scary dream! I hate when I dream that my puppy is in danger 🙁 serious scary stuff!
I’m amazed that you guys prefer going full head over the house, I prefer a house that’s all ready to move in! Too many details to worry about when it comes to big house projects, good luck!

  26. This might seem weird, but I love that you guys love your house so much you want to stay there forever. I’ve moved so many times (aside from when I was growing up and lived at home) and have NEVER had that feeling. I can only imagine how good it feels to be in a place you love SO much you never want to leave…lol

  27. I share you obsession with Groupon and thought I would share what has now been introduced to my life this week: Lifebooker. Seriously discounted salon services. It’s better than waiting for one to appear on Groupon (at least for me) and they are and extra 15% off everything right now!

  28. Super scary dream!!!! I often dream that I can fly. Sounds like fun ‘n games, but it can be quite frightening. Glad Murph was OK! 🙂

  29. Love the lemon loaf story! Is the story of how you and Mal met anywhere on your blog? I seem to remember that you dated, broke up and got back together again later or something like that.

  30. My mom is a residential architect in Scituate specializing in home additions of old homes; if you want a reference for her, shoot me an email. BTW – are you running the Cohasset 10k again next weekend? I am even though I was hit by a car while running a few weeks ago (I am OK). Wish me luck!

    1. Ooh, thank you! I’ll drop you an email this week.

I’m not running the 10k, but I love that race! One of my favorites! Glad to hear you’re ok and GOOD LUCK!!! 🙂

  31. I am also addicted to GroupOn. But the weird thing is I can go MONTHS without buying anything because the offers where I live are just okay, then suddenly I will buy one everyday for 2 weeks because the deals are FABULOUS!!

  32. No random dreams lately, but your’s was super random and kind of scary!
Oooh the sunshine sauce sounds delicious and simple! I’ll have to make myself a batch and use it in everything!

  33. We had our kitchen redone 7 years ago and it was a loooong 4 months. We had to live out of our basement and cook on a hot plate for some of it, and had to stay at a hotel for part of it as well. Also I started to really miss my privacy because the work men were always in the house!
