The Time We Didn’t Decorate Our Christmas Tree

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

Hi, friends! Happy Tuesday! I hope your week is off to a fabulous start!

I woke up hungry yesterday morning, so I cooked myself a big ol’ breakfast””complete with an omelet, home fries, and cantaloupe. I’m actually quite impressed with this breakfast. Usually during the week, I just eat whatever is easiest/quickest to make, but I went all out yesterday.

I actually needed to roast some potatoes for a couple of recipes later in the week, so I whipped up a batch of home fries while I was at it. Inside my omelet was tomatoes, crumbled feta, and pesto, which was an amazing flavor combination and reminded me of something you would order in a restaurant. I also drank a glass of OJ and a decaf almond milk latte. It was an awesome breakfast.

I spent the rest of the morning working my little tail off. Murphy kept me company by laying on my chest with his big pug butt resting on my desk for the entire morning. (No wonder my back is always so tight.)

I ended up working straight through 2:00 PM before my stomach started to grumble, so I took a little break to eat lunch. On the menu: My favorite salad ever. In the mix: salad greens, roasted sweet potato, walnuts, crumbled goat cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette. I love this salad so much and have been eating it non-stop lately.

A little while after that, Mal and I went out to buy our Christmas tree!

IMG_9161 (600x450)

We went to the same place we’ve gone for the last three years””basically since we moved to the area. The guy that runs it is super nice and told us all about the different kinds of trees, including their pros and cons, so we’ve been loyal customers ever since.

Mal and I walked around for only a few minutes before we decided on a cute, fat tree.

(We planned to go to CrossFit immediately after we picked out our tree, which is why we’re both in workout gear.)

Mal and I took our tree home, set it up, and planned to decorate it after CrossFit, but we ended up running out of time. Once we showered, made dinner, ate dinner, and cleaned up the kitchen, it was 8:30 PM. We could have decorated our tree, but we both felt like we would have been a little rushed, and we typically like to make an evening out of decorating our Christmas tree. You know, playing holiday music, sipping eggnog, and taking our time as we reminisce about each of our ornaments as we hang them on the tree. Our plan is to decorate it tonight!

Last night’s CrossFit workout involved a warm-up (rowing and double-unders), some mobility work (hip openers and calf stretches), pistol practice, and a short-and-sweet WOD. I did Level 2 for the WOD (95 pounds) and finished in 8:30. (Side note: Rx for ladies was 155 pounds! Holy crap. I can’t even clean that from the ground!)

After CrossFit, I was starving, so I housed a bunch of pistachios while I waited for dinner to cook.

Dinner was chicken, roasted broccoli, and brown rice, so I mixed it all together in a bowl and drizzled a little balsamic vinaigrette on top””I’m telling ya, I’m obsessed with this stuff!

After dinner, I ate a million dark chocolate sea salt caramels. I think I ate 6 or 7 by the end of the night. They’re so damn good.

Day 2 of 24 Days of Togetherness was “give each other 10-minute massages.” My shoulders were so sore from “Glen” the day before, the massage was much-needed and totally appreciated!

Health News & Views

I’ve skipped my workout plenty of times, sometimes for no real reason. (Well, unless  you count lounging on the couch with a glass of wine as a legitimate reason, which I don’t.)

Of course, skipping a workout doesn’t do me any favors when it comes to my fitness goals. And I know it’s important to stick to a regular exercise routine to stay healthy. But there are certain times when skipping a workout shouldn’t make you feel guilty. (I’d even consider them good reasons!)

Here are five times it’s okay to cut yourself some slack and skip your workout.

5 Good Reasons to Skip Your Workout

Questions of the Day

Have you bought your Christmas tree yet? Do you make an evening out of decorating it?

Fake or real Christmas tree?

When was the last time you skipped your workout for no good reason?

P.S. Be sure to enter my giveaway to win a Subway gift card and an American Express gift card! I will pick a winner tomorrow!

  1. Last year we ended up going with a real tree and the day after Christmas while taking off the ornaments every single needle fell off! So needless to say we went with a fake one this year haha! Decorating it was still a blast though 🙂

  2. Dang that is a crazy Rx weight for hang power cleans!! My 1rm is (what I thought was a respectable) 130. And add 30 pistols on top of it?! Yikes. I can’t imagine many people were able to do that Rx.

  3. We have an artificial tree, so it’s currently sitting in the box waiting to be set out. Our plan is to decorate it on Saturday. Our plan is to make a fun evening out of it. My husband is going to light the fire, will play Christmas music and take our time putting it up. I can’t wait! 🙂

  4. You’ll probably think this is crazy, but I haven’t had a REAL tree since I was little! Like probably 6 or 7! My brother and I were always sick around christmas time growing up and my parents realized we were allergic to the tree!! So, ever since we’ve always had an artificial one..whomp whomp 🙁 I would love to one day try a real one again, you can’t beat that pine smell! Heaven!!

  5. I actually skipped my workout today…I woke up feeling sore all over from my workout yesterday, so I decided to rest up so I can go in strong tomorrow! Sometimes you just gotta listen to your body 🙂

  6. Fun! We got our tree this past weekend. Make it an evening? I make it a day of Holiday Cheer. I ended up getting so wrapped up into it I skipped out of a friends cookout and made my husband go solo. That tree had to be finished and I refuse to rush it. LOl. Have fun tonight!

  7. I just got a real tree on Friday. The first one I have had since I was a kid. The first real tree my children have ever had. We made an afternoon of it. Such a fun time of year 🙂

  8. Sense I was younger we always did a real tree and a fake tree. But now that I’m married we do a fake tree because our apartment complex does not allow real trees :(. I love taking my time, making a whole evening out of it! Have fun tonight!

  9. My boyfriend and I got our first real christmas tree this year! This is our first Christmas living together so we thought we would make it a tradition. I also surprised him with the 24 days of togetherness and yesterday we picked listen to christmas music and drink wine. This coincided perfectly with our tree decorating plans! Last night we got all the lights on and went to hang the ornaments and who knew that ornaments (or just the bulk, cheap ones from target) don’t come with hooks?? So we had to take a little field trip…it did get finished though and I love it!

  10. I am loving your 24 days of togetherness. I wish my husband’s work schedule wasn’t so crazy this year, but we’re going to my home (first time since I moved East 7 years ago) for Christmas, so it makes up for it.

Because we are going out of town, we’re not putting the tree up this year. We usually do an artificial.

  11. The Christmas tree is up, decorated and smelling delicious! I haven’t been to the gym for a couple of days as I’m letting a tattoo heal up. Not wanting to bleed on your gym clothes and ruin a new tattoo is a good reason to stay away from the treadmill, right?

  12. Too funny — I posted last night that we got our tree, brought it home and got it standing, but by the time we got to decorating, we were too tired and hungry and decided we’ll do it tonight. Glad we’re not alone 🙂

  13. My husband and I went to a cut-your-own tree farm the Saturday after Thanksgiving and brought our two friends with us. We spent Saturday night decorating *our* tree and watching Love Actually and Sunday decorating *their* tree while listening to holiday music. It was super fun!

Can’t wait to see what your tree looks like!

  14. We always had real trees when the kids were small. I have an artificial one now, but some years I get a real one. We had a tree farm down the road where we lived years ago, so much fun to go cut your own tree. Cute pug butt!!

  15. When I was growing up we always had a real tree (and light real candles on it–my mom is Swiss), but in my little fam we just have a small fake tree.

I don’t usually skip workouts, mostly because I teach most of ’em (fitness instructor). hah!

  16. Tina – I have looked for those yummy caramels at CVS ever since you mentioned them the 1st time. Could you let us in where in the store they are located? Are they in the typical candy aisle…hanging on a peg…end-cap? I haven’t had any luck in finding them.

    1. I’ve seen them at newer CVS stores, usually in the candy section. For some reason, the older stores aren’t carrying the Gold Emblem line yet.

  17. I spent last Saturday decorating my tree while enjoying a Christmas movie and a hot toddy. Unfortunately, I also managed to tweak my back dragging the damn thing out of the basement…
… which has led to me skipping my workouts since then. Somehow it’s all connected!

  18. Our (fake 🙁 ) tree is up! My husband is much more on the ball about that stuff than I am. I walked out into the living room last Friday and there it was!

We also have a great candle from Bath and Body Works that smells just like a Christmas tree – that’s our compromise for not having a real one.

  19. I wrote my own blog about skipping workouts that has that hilarious commercial on why the girl didn’t go to the gym. “My mother called” I will use the excuse that it is raining! Not a good excuse as it rains often in the Northeast.

Real tree but we usually get it about 2 days before X-mas. I found scented tinsel at Walmart that smells like a real tree!

  20. My husband has a huge test for medical school tomorrow so we put off buying our tree – hopefully when we get back or this weekend at the latest! I can’t believe how quickly Christmas is approaching!

  21. That does look like it was an awesome breakfast!

I wish we could get a real tree but in a small apartment it is kind of hard. We have a fake small LED light Christmas tree instead which you can’t actually put decorations on.

Good luck with decorating your tree tonight 😉

  22. We do not have our tree yet, we will probably get in this weekend. We get a real tree and usually decorate it around the 15th.
I can not remember the last time I skipped a workout. I’m very OCD about it. I wish I could take it easy once in a while.

  23. i am loving your 24 days of togetherness idea – so much fun and a great way to spend more time with someone you love! ps: i like your coat!

  24. no tree, I’m for the real one grow up always having a real one. I had to skip working out all last month due to a kidney stone, it feels so good to be back!

  25. We actually went out and chopped down our own tree this year! It was so much fun and much easier than I thought it would be. I thought for sure we were going to have at least one National Lampoon Christmas Vacation kind of disaster but we didn’t.

  26. i thought your breakfast had chunks of cheese instead of cantaloupe. lol. i was super envious for like the 5 seconds it took to realize that those were actually cantaloupe. still looks delish, though.

but i think i need to stay far, far away from those caramels…

  27. I don’t blame you for waiting on the tree decorating. My dad was trying to rush doing it before Thanksgiving dinner and I had to calm him down and get him to back off! Decorating the tree is way better when we have time to draw it out and listen to Xmas music – not football on TV.

  28. We went with a fake Christmas tree this year and decorated it the day after Thanksgiving. I honestly can’t remember the last time I skipped a workout for no good reason. I try to keep on top of my workout routine.
