The Power of Twitter

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

In January 2009, I took a course at the Harvard Extension School called “Social Media for Web 2.0.” During one of the first classes, we discussed Twitter.

At the time, I had heard of Twitter, but I wasn’t using it because I didn’t really understand it. The instructor gave a brief demonstration and discussed how Twitter worked, which lead to an interesting conversation about how it could potentially change the way we communicate. By the end of the conversation, however, the majority of the room agreed that Twitter seemed pointless and it would never catch on. I guess we had no clue what we were talking about because, a few months later, Twitter exploded!

Sometimes, Twitter is pointless, but more often than not, I find it helpful, informative, and even motivating, especially in regard to early morning Saturday workouts. 😉

Check out my tweet from last night:

Basically, I was blowing off my workout. Well, my Twitter buddies weren’t letting me off the hook so easily. A bunch of people encouraged me to go to Body Pump and others shared their own workout plans for the next morning. Angie and I even confirmed (via tweet) that our alarms clocks were set for an early morning wake-up call! Who knew Twitter could motivate me like that?!?

Even the snow that fell overnight did not deter my plans!

Cleaning the snow off of my car is never fun, but I was determined to get myself to Body Pump.

At least it was a pretty morning!

Before heading to the gym, I made myself a bowl of oatmeal with dried blueberries, ground flaxseed meal, and peanut butter.

After Body Pump, I rewarded myself with a Hawaiian Chocolate Nut iced coffee from Marylou’s. It was totally worth waking up at 6:15 on a Saturday morning!

When I arrived home, my little pug was still snoozing. He was so adorable, I just had to snap a photo.

Unfortunately, I woke him up.

Murphy was not pleased.

Lots of projects to tackle this afternoon!

What do you think of Twitter?

  1. I actually really like Twitter. I don’t know how to use it properly….is there a “Twitter for dummies” article anywhere out there?
I was up that early too to meet my Team in Training team. Got to run in the rain using a garbage bag as a rain jacket. 🙂

  2. I am still “afraid” of Twitter. I have never tried it. Between my Blog and Facebook and work I feel like it would add a whole new connection to the computer. I still don’t have internet through my phone which I think keeps me in the conversation and not always attached to some social media outlet. I know for me it is time for the computer when I have my lap top out and time to put it to rest to enjoy what is going on around me.

  3. Wow…kudos to you for such an early workout on a Saturday. Re: Twitter…I think it is like any other social media/networking tool…it can be quite useful like you mentioned above, or it can be kinda pointless.

  4. I use twitter, but my tweets are private and are more of a very concise diary for myself. I do follow a few companies and celebs. The trending topics can be informative sometimes when they aren’t related to Justin Bieber or whatever.

  5. The Hawaiian Chocolate Nut iced coffee (even on a snowy and cold day) looks wonderful!

Twitter. I jumped on the Twitter bandwagon late 2009. I still have no idea how to use it truly properly. I am following thousands of people (b/c in my early twitter days I would follow back anyone who started to follow me) but I need to set up filters to somehow see the tweets of maybe only like my closest 100 friends or something 🙂

I know I miss tons of things. Both good, bad, fun, and funny…by not having a better system for catching things.

    I need a Twitter 101 course 🙂

  6. I still don’t understand twitter! There’s a part of me that I guess doesn’t want to be that connected…however I should be so that my pals will get me to the gym on time too:) My husband and I made your really good pancake recipe this morning with the addition of pumpkin! We loved it! Thank you for providing us with daily inspiration and new meal ideas:)

  7. I use to think that twitter was a total waste of time but now I have jumped on the wagon and I love it. It is a great way to stay connected with others and just fun!

  8. I think it’s definitely a useful tool, and it’s part of a general trend toward social media that has really taken hold in the past few years. It’s definitely a change in how people usually communicate, but then again so is every other technological advancement. I think as people learn more about Twitter and other new technologies, they will warm to them just as you have.

  9. I really like twitter. I use it to follow people that I know in real life, online, and even celebrities. I don’t tweet as much as others, but I always have to check for updates all the time!

  10. I thought it was dumb too! I didn’t see the point…but I joined a few days ago and I love it! It’s a great way to connect to people with similar interests…but who you may not ever meet in real life.

  11. Wait… you got into MaryLou’s even though a car drove through it’s wall yesterday? Wow – they really clean up and repair fast!!

  12. I love twitter. Its how I found you! I dont tweet yet but I follow funny people i.e. Ellen S#!t my dad says etc. Makes me laugh. And the pug pix are to die for!!!

  13. Love Twitter but I use Facebook more. I have a pretty active workout accountability page there called Losing It and Loving It and it’s easier to comment there than on Twitter ha ha

I like Twitter more for personal stuff but use it some for business too.

Love seeing pictures of Murphy. I’m so ready for a dog but Kev not so much YET. I’m still working on him. We had to put our Basset Hound down 2 years ago and our cat just last year. Still have a Blue & Gold Macaw and turtle but still want puppies running around.

  14. I have a twitter account, but I dont post updates or actually use it. I do however follow a few celebs, which for me is the only reason for Twitter – to follow people i admire – whether it be people in the health and fitness industry or a celeb!

  15. it’s so funny you just wrote about this! i just joined twitter a couple of weeks ago (per strong recommendation from one of my best friends) and had written it off as pretty pointless and unnecessary (i mean, who really needs to know what one is doing literally like 24/7? but i digress). thanks for re-motivating me to give this whole twitter thing another shot… we’ll see how this goes!

  16. Haven’t used twitter yet but I’ll probably jump on the bandwaggon soon. I can’t get enough of your doggy! So adorable. Pictures of your pug will never get old… seriously! haha.

  17. i just started using twitter and think it’s cool but can be a bit overwhelming so i try and take baby steps with my tweeting.. also, i find that people have connections with folks on twitter and they only tweet with people they know..

  18. I hated twitter for a long time because it was confusing and only offered 140 characters. Then I jumped on the bandwagon and love it.

It allows me to communicate with friends quickly and efficiently. Sometimes it’s a big time suck but it has great powers to motivate and communicate.

  19. I love that you have iced coffee even when it’s snowing! Actually, if I lived somewhere with delicious coffee like that, I’d buy them regardless of the weather too 🙂

  20. I love twitter! It’s a lot less drama than Facebook & not as many teenie boppers playing all the games they play. I actually think that’s how I found YOU & your blog! I know it’s def where I recommend u often to others! LOL (well your blog.. not YOU personally)

  21. What a cute little coffee place! And I love how you talked about the power of twitter – I never really understood the entire concept until last year and I am finally beginning to realize what a great tool it truly is!

  22. I love iced coffee year round too, that flavor sounds awesome.

I just started Twitter in November, getting the hang of it. Trying to keep my tweets in check- no more than a handful a day, because it gets old when one person clogs up my twitter feed (i.e. I love Tone It Up, but when they tweet…and then 2 minutes later retweet 5 other people’s tweets about them… I start to consider un-following them).

Nice job getting up for a 7am class!!

  23. I had *exactly* the same feeling about Twitter in the beginning – it was silly, it wouldn’t catch on. Then I actually started using it at work – to look for trending topics, follow news organizations. Now, it’s a good way to connect with people, find cool local deals, new music, recipes and I try and use it to promote my blog and writing. Whether anyone reads is another story – but I think Twitter’s fun! And yes, I get a kick out of following celebrities. Some of them can be pretty funny in 140 characters or less

  24. At first, I thought Twitter was stupid and I vowed never to get involved with it. Then, once I started getting into my blog more, I decided to create an account. Well from there, I’ve become hooked. Fortunately, I can’t spend most days sitting in front of it and staring at what everyone else is doing with their day since I’m working. But I do find that when I’m home, it tends to suck me right in. It’s dangerous! But fun at the same time to interact with people 🙂
