I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.


An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

A few months ago, when I was going through a really rough time in my life, my friend Rebecca sent me a book to cheer me up. It was called The Book of Awesome, and it has made me happy every day since. I’m actually surprised it’s taken me so long to blog about it!


Back in 2008, the author started a website called 1000 Awesome Things as a “getaway” from his everyday life. He writes:

Polar ice caps are melting, hurricanes swirl in the seas, wars are heating up around the world, and the job market is in a deep freeze.


It’s getting pretty ugly out there.

When he started the site, he never imagined that writing about finding money in your old coat pocket or watching The Price is Right when you’re at home sick would amount to anything, but he soon realized that these tiny moments make an awesome difference in many people’s stressed-out, jam-packed lives. The website grew and grew, and eventually it turned into a book.

Like many people, it’s sometimes easy for me to forget the things that make me smile, but this book constantly reminds me that awesome things are all around. I started to read it from the beginning, but now I skip around and read one or two chapters every night before I go to bed. The Book of Awesome always makes me smile, so I go to bed with all sorts of happy thoughts in my head. It’s a nice way to end the day.

Here’s my list of AWESOME:

  • Laughing so hard I start to cry
  • When Murphy does elephant butt
  • The sound of the door opening when Mal comes home from school
  • Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise”
  • Realizing someone else emptied the dishwasher
  • Crossing the finish line of a race
  • Cream cheese frosting
  • Randomly bumping into an old friend
  • Sleeping in new bed sheets
  • Evening walks with Mal and Murphy
  • When it’s sunny and raining at the same time
  • The sounds of New York City at 34th and 8th
  • Waking up and realizing it’s Saturday
  • When people send me funny photos of pugs
  • The first scoop out of a jar of nut butter
  • Wearing flip flops in October
  • Adding more weight to my bar in Body Pump
  • Puppy dreams
  • Text messages from my mom
  • Getting Extra Bucks with my receipt at CVS
  • Listening to old DMB shows really loud in my car
  • The smell of burning leaves in the fall
  • Scoring a parking spot in Harvard Square
  • Seeing dogs run free at the park


A couple of months ago, I bought a box of Trader Joe’s Vegetable Masala Burgers, but I never tried them. They just sat in my freezer until last night.

I finally cooked one up, and I was pleasantly surprised by its ”˜meatiness’ and strong flavor of Indian spices. Let’s just say, it wasn’t a boring veggie burger!

I added my Vegetable Masala Burger to a salad made with arugula, tomatoes, cucumbers, steamed spinach, navy beans, broccoli, carrots, and balsamic vinegar.

This morning’s breakfast looks sort of gross, but it wasn’t at all! In the mix: oatmeal, pumpkin pie spice, baked cinnamon apples (that I cooked last night), crumbled Chia Charger Xpresso, and a big scoop of Chia Charger nut butter. Holy yum. And holy chia seeds.

What’s on your AWESOME list?



  1. I love that book also. Do you know there is a second one and also a holiday one. I am not sure if the holiday one has been released yet though. I want to get the day to day calendar of that this year. It would be great way to start the day.

  2. This books sounds great! It’s crazy how your attitude and positive outlook on life can change everything. Just a few things on my AWESOME list: reading a good book; evening walks with my husband and dogs; conquering a run; cooking food for loved ones; perfect weather (blue skies, a slight chill in the air); the smell of bread in the oven; sipping on a good cup of coffee. The list could go on – this is so fun to think of them. It immediately starts making you smile!

  3. I love this idea!! It’s great to fixate on the positive too I think.

    I’m with you on cream cheese frosting! Also clothes that have been hung on the line to dry, Christmas Eve (I still feel like a kid 🙂 ), and waking up early and being able to go back to sleep.

  4. I love that book! Some of the things mentioned in it are on my list. Getting all green lights, scoring a great shopping deal, the smell of barbecues (I miss summer!), when no one in your family likes Brussels sprouts so you get to eat them all at Thanksgiving, belting out tunes like I’m some sort of rockstar…. like Ashley above, I love thinking about these!

  5. That’s kinda funny (and awesome) that you found that book because a friend gave that to my husband a few months back, purely based on the amount of times my husband refers to things as being awesome (ie: everything lol). I just showed him what you blogged about and he laughed!

  6. This is adorable. My awesome list includes:
    -picking my boyfriend up at the train station or airport (we’re long distance, and even though we see each other every two weeks, I still get butterflies when I see him waiting for me).
    -taking a shower after a day spent at the beach.
    -raw cookie dough.
    -when my students start memorizing (and enjoying!) Shakespeare.

  7. I love your list, alot of things would be on mine as well like puppy dreams (especially when Tux tries to run in his sleep lol) and fresh new sheets!!

    By the way, have you read The Hunger Games? I’m on book two after discovering the series on Friday and am blown away with how good it is!!

  8. That sounds fabulous!!

    A few of mine : kissing my husband after a long trip, teaching a fitness class, adding weight to my bar at BodyPUMP, buying new shoes, going to the temple with my husband, eating dinner with my family, having all the socks get back to me after the wash/drying, cuddling with my husband, sunsets, playing in the ocean, and laughing hysterically with friends/family 🙂

  9. I bought a tiny notebook a few weeks ago (so that I could park at the bookstore parking lot) that says “Love” on the cover. I didn’t know what I’d use it for, until I realized I should use it to make a little list every day of things I loved that day.

    A recent day: I love… hooping, seeing my friends, finding old emails that give me an attack of nostalgia, weather getting colder.

  10. I’m surprised I haven’t heard of the book before. It sounds great! You should do a monthly awesome list!

    On my list would be…
    -my dad’s matzah ball soup
    -a waiting room with butterscotch chips
    -catching a rerun of 90210
    -running through crisp fall air

    Will have to think of some more…may be the perfect blog post to start my week : )

  11. I love those Veggie Masala burgers from Trader Joe’s! I just got hooked on them a couple of weeks ago. They were giving out samples of them and as soon as I tried them, I grabbed them off the shelf. So good 🙂

  12. My nephew’s giggle is on my awesome list. He still does that uncontrollable giggling that is infectious.
    It never fails to make me laugh.

    Clean bed sheets is my other. I love fresh-bed-sheet night 🙂

  13. That first warm day in the spring. And when you start realizing that the days are getting longer in the spring. The smell of something delicious in the oven.

  14. On my awesome list:

    – Downloading new songs for running
    – Finding an English-speaking yoga studio in my new home (Holland)
    – Getting a BBM or WhatsApp message from my family
    – When my Twitter feed starts rolling when my friends in the US start waking up!
    – Staying up late to watch movies
    – When my Boyfriend goes “YESSSSS” when I make one of his favorite things for dinner or breakfast

  15. Aren’t those veggie masala burgers awesome? I’ve been out for almost 2 months now and desperately need to make a TJ’s trip solely for those babies!
    A couple things on my awesome list:
    -seeing my dog’s tail wag so fast it looks like it’s going to fall off when I come home.
    -coming downstairs in the morning to coffee already brewing
    -a run outside in this perfect fall weather

    1. Murphy sometimes wags his tail so hard, it comes uncurled! I love that. I should add it to my list. Thanks for the dog tail awesomeness! 🙂

  16. I love this idea! A few of the the things on my list of awesome are:
    Hot toast with melty butter
    My cat purring
    Warm socks out of the dryer
    Walking on hot sand
    Great conversations with strangers when traveling
    Hearing a set of great songs on the radio
    Seeing the moon out during the day

  17. What a great book/blog idea! I love when people start spreading the word about looking at life in a different way and being appreciative of the little things in life.

    Have you heard of The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin? Another book focused on appreciating the little things in life… pretty sweet read.

  18. I just made Mama Pea’s Mmmmm Sauce for the first time. Oh so yummy! I think your masala burger might be even better with a little dollup of Mmmmm sauce on top.

  19. A few things would be:

    Hot showers on chilly mornings, when I can crack the bathroom window slightly and still feel a tiny cool breeze.
    Towels fresh out of the laundry and still warm.
    Long walks with my husband and dog, with a stop to get a latte along the way.
    Gym classes that leave me with sweat dripping off my nose (sounds kind of gross, but it’s so gratifying).
    When my dog races around our apartment like a maniac after I give her a bath. (she also does this in the rain and it’s hysterical).

    I’m going to look for this book the next time I’m at the bookstore. Thanks for the recommendation!

  20. That’s so fun! I like folding warm laundry in the Winter, a hot shower after my workout, curling up with a good book, a hot bowl of spaghetti, chocolate, pillow talk before bed, warm cup of tea and snuggling with my kitty…phew I think I could go on for awhile.

  21. Love this! My list includes seeing how excited my dog Clifford gets when I come home, taking a long hot shower, freshly painted toes, getting a compliment, when the boyfriend says something sweet.

  22. A few of things on my list are: hearing my kids say please/thank you/you’re welcome without instruction, seeing the trees change colors, laying on the beach, spending the day with my hubby w/o the kids, watching my kids sleep.

  23. That sounds like a pretty cool book! I’ll have to pick it up some time. Some things on my list would be curling up under the covers & vegging out on a rainy day, sipping hot chocolate on a chilly night, eating a healthy meal, working up a good sweat, not having to work on weekends anymore, hanging out with friends even if we’re just watching tv. There’s definitely more, but that’s just a few!

  24. I was just thinking about things like this last night as my boy and I took the pup for a walk. Something as simple as a late night walk to the gas station for a Snapple really puts a smile on my face!
