The Book of Awesome

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

A few months ago, when I was going through a really rough time in my life, my friend Rebecca sent me a book to cheer me up. It was called The Book of Awesome, and it has made me happy every day since. I’m actually surprised it’s taken me so long to blog about it!

Back in 2008, the author started a website called 1000 Awesome Things as a “getaway” from his everyday life. He writes:

Polar ice caps are melting, hurricanes swirl in the seas, wars are heating up around the world, and the job market is in a deep freeze.

It’s getting pretty ugly out there.

When he started the site, he never imagined that writing about finding money in your old coat pocket or watching The Price is Right when you’re at home sick would amount to anything, but he soon realized that these tiny moments make an awesome difference in many people’s stressed-out, jam-packed lives. The website grew and grew, and eventually it turned into a book.

Like many people, it’s sometimes easy for me to forget the things that make me smile, but this book constantly reminds me that awesome things are all around. I started to read it from the beginning, but now I skip around and read one or two chapters every night before I go to bed. The Book of Awesome always makes me smile, so I go to bed with all sorts of happy thoughts in my head. It’s a nice way to end the day.

Here’s my list of AWESOME:

  • Laughing so hard I start to cry
  • When Murphy does elephant butt
  • The sound of the door opening when Mal comes home from school
  • Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise”
  • Realizing someone else emptied the dishwasher
  • Crossing the finish line of a race
  • Cream cheese frosting
  • Randomly bumping into an old friend
  • Sleeping in new bed sheets
  • Evening walks with Mal and Murphy
  • When it’s sunny and raining at the same time
  • The sounds of New York City at 34th and 8th
  • Waking up and realizing it’s Saturday
  • When people send me funny photos of pugs
  • The first scoop out of a jar of nut butter
  • Wearing flip flops in October
  • Adding more weight to my bar in Body Pump
  • Puppy dreams
  • Text messages from my mom
  • Getting Extra Bucks with my receipt at CVS
  • Listening to old DMB shows really loud in my car
  • The smell of burning leaves in the fall
  • Scoring a parking spot in Harvard Square
  • Seeing dogs run free at the park

A couple of months ago, I bought a box of Trader Joe’s Vegetable Masala Burgers, but I never tried them. They just sat in my freezer until last night.

I finally cooked one up, and I was pleasantly surprised by its ”˜meatiness’ and strong flavor of Indian spices. Let’s just say, it wasn’t a boring veggie burger!

I added my Vegetable Masala Burger to a salad made with arugula, tomatoes, cucumbers, steamed spinach, navy beans, broccoli, carrots, and balsamic vinegar.

This morning’s breakfast looks sort of gross, but it wasn’t at all! In the mix: oatmeal, pumpkin pie spice, baked cinnamon apples (that I cooked last night), crumbled Chia Charger Xpresso, and a big scoop of Chia Charger nut butter. Holy yum. And holy chia seeds.

Question of the Day

What’s on your AWESOME list?

  1. Long time reader, first time comment.

I just had to stop reading your list and leave this comment when I hit “cream cheese frosting”.

PLEASE try the cheesecake and red vevelt cake from Two Little Red Hens when you are here in New York next week for the race. I finished an entire cheesecake on my own when I was 9 month pregnant. IT IS TO DIE FOR. PLEASE, I beg you to go try it!

  2. Pingback: Music Memories
  3. I feel like Murphy doing elephant butt needs to be on everyone’s awesome list. I seriously just watched that video and laughed so hard! Some things I think are awesome: Coming home to an already cooked dinner, when my dog growls at me because he wants me to pay attention to him, unexpected compliments, breaking my own work out records, surprise iced coffees, when things just magically work out and everything fits together.
I totally want to buy that book now, but I think the book needs to come with the Murphy video!

  4. Totally love the blog based off that book! The awesome things they talk about are so relate-able to everyone. It makes me feel bonded with society that I, along with everyone else, appreciate many of the same little things.

  5. I love this post! I’ll have to look up this book when I get home from work. My (brief) list of awesome include:
*Getting to my car before the meter lady can give me a ticket
*Ice coffee made exactly how I wanted it
    *People watching at Walmart
*Getting extra frosting on a piece of cake
    *Random smiles from strangers

  6. *Getting to the L station just as the train arrives
*When a new recipe turns out just right
*Cuddle time with Oliver, my yorkiepoo
*Nights in with husband accompanied by a glass of wine
    *Tasty, non-dry gluten-free cupcakes
*Beating a time goal I have set for myself during a run
*Getting through a full set of thigh work at Bar Method w/o taking a break

  7. Making every green light on my way to work, a unsolicited hug from my teenager, the dishwasher mysteriously emptied, my 8 year old snuggled up next me on the couch, the hustle & bustle of Chicago

  8. Sounds like a great book! I love your list 🙂 Some of my awesome things would include: a great workout, hot oatmeal on a cold day, almond butter, my kids sleeping in, a restful sleep, fall leaves, getting a green light, etc….

  9. I love your list! Cream cheese frosting is definitely on mine too!

Other things on my current list are: realizing that I have frozen soup and cornbread in my freezer on a night when I’m too busy to make dinner, walking through campus and seeing all the colourful leaves, getting out of class early, pumpkin oatmeal, finding out a dvd is only $15 when I thought it was $45, and the feeling after doing a great strength training workout. 🙂

  10. Hi Tina. I have and LOVE the Book of Awesome. (my favorite is the farting in the elevator one! Yes…I do have the humour of a 15 year old boy!) Some of my awesomes? Farmers markets, taking pictures that turn out well, my cat Neva lying on her back looking like a floating otter, for that matter floating otters are pretty awesome too, pulling up to a parking meter that has lots of time left on it, really sharp cheese, wine to go with the really sharp cheese, and my husband. Have a good day.

  11. My list of awesome?? Some are similar: hearing my hubs come home from work, dancing at the studio, warm coffee on a cold day, super crunchy leaves in the fall(I still go out of my way to stomp them), taking photos, being tickled, and receiving packages from home:)

  12. Sounds like a great book! I love stopping and smiling at “the little things.” A couple awesome things from today include listening to Taylor Swift while prepping dinner and waiting for my fiance to come home and Chick-fil-a breakfasts.

  13. -Crossing the finish line of a marathon
    -Chipotle Veggie Burritos
-Cooking dinner and watching a movie with my boyfriend
    -Having my parents visit
    -Surprising loved ones
    -My Friday yoga class
    -Chocolate croissants
    -Starbucks breakfast sandwiches
    -Living in NYC

  14. Hey Tina!

Wow, thanks for writing such nice things about my book! I’m totally flattered. Believe me, I never thought rants about farting in public, locking people out of the car, and playing on dangerous playgrounds would get other people excited, too. You have a really cool site! And I’m already starting to think Veggie Masala Burgers are awesome for some reason.

    Thanks again!

  15. On my awesome list…
    – Dogs who wanna give you some love no matter how crappy your day was
    – Being able to complete races (I just did my first 9K yesterday)
    – Brisk spring or fall mornings when I get to take at least one dog for a walk
    – Good seasonal craft beer

  16. I thought I was the only one that gets SO excited when it’s my turn to break into a new jar of peanut-butter. I love being the first one! It makes the inner four year old in me happy 🙂

  17. A few things on my awesome list:
listening to pouring rain while I am snuggling inside w/ a blanket
laughing so hard you can’t breathe
    fall weather
    anytime I sleep past 6:30am
a big hug from my dad
    Thai food
    Starbucks cinnamon dolce latte

  18. Love that awesome list concept! I try to keep a mental list of things like that, but lately have actually been thinking of just jotting them down somewhere. Maybe I should!

    Some things on my list:
-The foam leftover in the cup when you finish a chai latte
-Waking up before everyone else Christmas morning to see the gifts under the tree
-Listening to a new favorite song on repeat
-Getting a nice text from someone unexpected
    -Shoulder massages
