The 30 Healthiest Foods Challenge

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Good morning! 😎

Mal’s school canceled school again due to snow, so we get to hang out all day! Hooray!! Of course, having Mal at home during the day is awesome, but I get absolutely nothing done. I’d much rather spend time with him than my computer. Hopefully, I can crank out a bunch of work this morning and spend the remainder of the day with him.

Weirdly, I didn’t wake up starving for breakfast like I normally do. But, I’m always in the mood for peanut butter, so I made myself a piece of toasted with Teddie spread on top.

On the side, I had some fruit salad.

And a glass of iced coffee as usual. This batch of coffee was so strong! 😯 I ended up adding a lot more soy milk to it to water it down.

Earlier this week, I stumbled upon an article in Real Simple called “The 30 Healthiest Foods.” Real Simple went out and asked the country’s top dietitians and nutritionists to tell them which superpowered ingredients we should be incorporating into our diets regularly. Here are their top picks:

That’s quite a list, right? I immediately saw it and knew it would be perfect for a month-long challenge. I already eat and enjoy most of these foods, but there are a bunch that aren’t on my radar, so challenging myself to eat each of them before the end of the month is a great way to jazz-up my diet and try some new recipes.

Over the course of the month, I’ll update this post as I check-off foods from the list, so feel free to stop back and see how I incorporate these ingredients into my meals and snacks.

Question of the Day

Do you eat foods just because they are nutritious or are your food choices based solely on taste?

I’m a little on the fence about sardines, but I’m going to give them a fair chance!

P.S. I’m hosting a cereal giveaway over on Trading Up Downtown today!

  1. I LOVE this idea!!! I’m also going to take on this challenge for the month of February 🙂 Looking foward to getting some recipe ideas from your website too.

  2. Give sardines a try! My favorite is to grill them very slightly in a grill pan (a min or two per side) then serve on crostini drizzled with olive oil. I eat these because they’re good, not because they’re healthy, but it’s nice that good often = healthy anyway!

  3. i used to eat foods solely because they were nutritious, but after a while they became favorites and now they are foods that i want to eat because of their taste. i’m glad to see that i love *almost* everything on your list! 🙂

  4. I loved this months article of Real Simple. The cover and photographs of the “30 Healthiest Foods” was amazing!
I noticed (and smiled while noticing) that all the foods are already regular staples in my diet (minus literally 2). I love them all.
I eat them all for a variety of reasons. I would say that health AND taste are the two strongest reasons. I think the only way for people to understand the concept of eating well balanced, healthful meals is to understand that there must be a constant connection between health and taste. You cannot survive on one without the other for very long.

  5. Such a good list! I find that once you start eating all these healthy foods you find that they can pack as much flavour as some of the unhealthier foods and you don’t miss the unhealthy ones at all. I think the best idea is to learn how to make these foods taste their best!

  6. My sisters and I are always talking about healthy foods, weight loss, exercise, etc., and we are always thinking of new challenges to try. This is a great one. I might save it for our March Challenge. Great idea! Thanks!

  8. I need to try this challenge, too. I especially need to come up with some new breakfast ideas!!! Namely, some that include a decent amount of protein… I am too cereal-obsessed!
